Fixed stats are a much better RP device than stat packs in my opinion. You have to work to overcome the limitations of your race in order to succeed. Faelings shouldn't be better than Igasho at smashing things. Lucidian shouldn't be able to move as fast as Aslaran. Trill should have a higher charisma than Illithoid. It all makes sense.
Except for Merian, which currently suck at everything .

I sniff a wee bit of bias there. I felt the same way with a Lobo mage, and even told Elostian as much IG. Doesn't mean I'm immune from getting incredibly frustrated because I like race A and class B, but they don't go well together because of some arbritrary design choice.
But that's the major stumbling block for Lusternia, yes. None of the races in the other MUDs were magically made from the shards of old gods, so having fixed stats and spec races makes sense here. Now, while it would be nice to have statpacks, I know it's not going to happen.

What he said. By tying basic stats so tightly to race, you make people choose between fighting/bashing/influencing efficiently, or roleplying the race they want. If I wanted to be a real top tier combatant, I wouldn't be a furrikin. If I wanted to get to demigod the fastest, I wouldn't be furrikin. If I wanted to influence the best, I wouldn't be furrikin. If I wanted to bash the best, I wouldn't be furrikin. I love the race, but it is at best ok for all of those, and there are other races I could choose that would excel at them. If they decided furrikin suddenly had 9 con, or an equilibrium penalty, I'd be forced to switch out, despite my intense love of the race.
Everiine2010-07-12 21:16:35
On the other hand, I think the penalties for some races could be reduced-- last time I checked, Advantages were nerfed but Disadvantages weren't, which is not right IMO. And some stats could be tweaked, if people more knowledgeable than I got involved. We've already had one major racial overhaul though, so I'm not expecting any more any time soon... ever.

Achaea's racial system is one of the reasons I passed it over in favor of Lusternia. While not all of Lusternia's class-race combinations are viable, in my opinion we're much better off than Achaea. It seemed to me, when I was looking into that sort of thing, that a couple of races completely overshadowed the others (Rajamala, for example), that several races were mediocre and/or neglected, and that at least a couple were just plain broken/too niche (when I say "too niche," I'm thinking mostly of Grooks).
Lusty has a lot more racial variety overall, more viable class-race match-ups, only one truly broken race (Merian), and very few races that overshadow all the others. I think only specialized Faelings come close, particularly Harbingers. We don't have to make any kind of choice: We make good combatants, excellent influencers, and better-than-average bashers.
Plus, Lusternia still has noticeable racial role-play occurring.
So I don't really mind that we don't have stat packages. I tend to agree it's good that they're fixed, although I suppose a LITTLE TINY bit of alteration might be good. (After all, real humans don't all have exactly the same "stats.") A point added here, a point subtracted there, etc.

Maybe the Moondancers are just lucky that we got a point to Moon Falls, then.
Maybe? Yours isn't even hard to walk to, either. Plus you can get a rainbow to take you there. Moondancers are spoiled rotten is what they are.

I know I should be mad about you killing Serens, but in this case I totally believe you and I have to thank you for doing it.
It wasn't Serens, it was just Ijen...
(...no really, even ask him.)

Gaudiguch's orgbix also only has one point in the city.
The Flame was plenty more useful than the Belt. It went to two places in PrimeSeren, Faethorn, three points in EtherWilde (one of which was to the Aspects), and the Moon Bubble (which leads you to possible death if you take the mirror to Astral).
The Belt looks like PrimeGaudi, two places on Fire, and four places on Vortex. Vortex, I can understand, with all the valves and such, but otherwise, it seems kind of lackluster...
Maybe that's just Serenwilde having more places it's affiliated with. (Though why make one of the planar tasks going to the Dramube(?) if we're not affiliated to it?)
EDIT: Oh, and making newbies go to Cosmic and Astral = lots of deaths.

It's cause we're more important.

Every newbie I have ever made can tank Astral and Cosmic indefinitely with the intro provided health vial. You just have to clear any mobs on Astral for them first.
And all the cities have to absolutely random aetherbubbles thrown on there. The communes have Moon and Night, which are a lot more convenient.

Hallifax gets the Matrix, two random spots on Continuum, the Beryl sphere, the Air archway on Air and a random spot on air. We don't even get the full seven places the other orgs get.
Esano2010-07-13 02:11:18
Mag gets ....
Prime Megalith
Earth Archway
Earth Citadel
Mountains of Madness (cubix entrance, outside the dock)
Nifilhema's Pit (outside the Iron Maiden)
Ashtorath's Pit (base of the Tower)
Labyrinth of the Damned (heading towards Luciphage)

I've always wondered why the same people take newbies to die to obesefessors instead of learning to check first and die alone?
Um, um, Rave...
TM of Firejewels and already filled up all the cartel slots!

We have a lot of backed up designs. I wish the ones from the year before would carry over, at least...
