Her date was pleasant enough, but she knew that if her life was a movie this guy would be buried in the credits as something like "Second Tall Man."

I really like that too.

Good and bad writing do not exist. Clear and understandable writing should be the primary objective, and writers should always cater to their audiences.

It's the cardinal law in the writing major; your audience should be able to understand you, and the audience is all that matters. If you cannot communicate effectively to the people who will read and hopefully understand your work, something is wrong and you should consider reevaluating your methods.

Ever notice how you tend to read the simpler scrolls more thoroughly? IRE is about fast and effective communication.

How will YOU communicate today? dunno.gif

Clarity is only the first step. "Good" and "bad" come in after it's been settled, when you don't just convey your message, but also convey via nearly-subliminal techniques the impression, emotion, or other reaction desired. You can't do any of that without clarity, of course, but just because it's a necessary first step doesn't mean it's the last step.

Heyyy, a discussion that hasn't devolved into mudslinging. Personally, I'm a fan of eloquent brevity, but what I really enjoy is getting down and dirty with my descriptors. Coarse language is a beautiful thing - the more pungently evocative, the better. I wouldn't presume to diss on anybody else's style of writing, though. Some people enjoy riffing off Lovecraft and some people enjoy riffing off Hemingway, it's just the way life is. There's good writers on both sides of the spectrum. (For reference, I'm generally riffing off Bukowski or Hunter S Thompson.)

Yes, thank you. You and Max Morenberg would not get along very well.

Plato, either.

Please note, for the jury, that I did not make any sweeping claims against the union of effective writing and pretty writing, and I firmly believe that the two can coincide pleasantly if the writer knows what he or she is doing.

... and who the audience is. wink.gif

My rave: yay linguistics.

Use the word that'll best describe the object. Red, scarlet and crimson describe different shades of one colour. If it is crimson, it is crimson. If it is scarlet, it is scarlet. If it is any hue of red, it is red. That's how I do it when I try to make and write things.
