This is why the forums seem so angry.
Really, it's not that bad.
The sweet irony of the arguments about Shayle going in this thread is quite delicious as well.

The person behind Rhysus' keyboard has an unfortunate incident involving a webcam and another Lusternian to his name.
More information please!

I didn't claim all crying is weak or pathetic, that's your jumping to conclusions or putting words in my mouth, so to speak. Right click, block buddy. It's just that simple. There was no mention of phone calls or harrassment in real life whatsoever, and is an entirely different subject altogether. How many times have people claimed to get upset at something in Lusty and been advised to take a break or otherwise not invest so much of themselves in their character? Plenty of times. And comparing something said on an instant message to something that happens on the street isn't even in the same ball park. You can't right click, block maniac on the street- the magical moden does indeed allow you to choose to a vastly greater degree who you do and do not interact with.
I have to agree with Shiri, and disagree with you here.
From your posts it seems you are taking two entirely different situations and throwing them into one pot. But in fact they are too different to fit.
Getting harrassed IG / OOG about your -character- is one thing. Like me telling xy they suck because they are an illithoid or because their character lives in a city and my char hates that. That's within the scope of the game and does not relate to the person playing the character. This is also the kind where people are told to take a break from the game.
The other however is, if you are harrassed as -player- whether IG or OOG. If someone tells you you suck because you are a catholic, are black or a european.. or because you're female.. that's ENTIRELY different. Whether these insults are received over the internet, phone or spoken to you directly makes little difference. These you can't take a break from as they were aimed at -you- not your character.
Both sort of insults are received over the internet. However, getting upset about the second sort is far from pathetic.

I've been playing IRE since I was thirteen. Believe you me, I have gotten upset over these games for lots of reasons, but never to a great extent because of being OOCly harassed by someone.
1) Over-messenger harassment? Block. Simple. It is nothing like ignoring someone IRL, because you can't literally make them cease to exist in the context of your perception. That's what blocking does.
2) In-game harassment? Snub. Doesn't stop'em? Issue. This is one of the few areas in which IRE has historically done an awesome job, hands down.
Getting upset enough to block/snub/issue because of harassment is one thing. Letting the harassment continue until you can't function because of it? Ab so lute lee free king stew pid. Every person I've ever known who allowed this sort of thing to happen was the worst of drama queens, and I have no sympathy for it.
If something like that spread to phone/in-person contact, then that's a whole other matter entirely. Personally I think you were a little dumb for enabling the situation, but we all make mistakes and there's no protection against crazy. So call the police, cry on a shoulder, and get back to enjoying what you enjoy!

fun snippet from Achaea forums:
achaean#1: I'll take your password after I pwn you, k?
achaean#2: This isn't a deep-fried snickers eating contest, young fatawan.
achaean#1: Duel me for your password, achaean#1?
achaean#2: How you gonna duel me with gravy all over your damn keyboard?
achaean#1: A better question would be how to duel someone who never logs in or never comes out of hiding.
achaean#2: LOOK MOMMY THE RHINO IS GETTING CLOSE TO THE CAR! Protip: You don't get any skinnier by challenging people to video game duels. You need to exercise and stop shoveling butterfingers into your pie hole.
I lol'd, but still...mean.

Most of it isn't even entertainingly mean. Like 80% of the responses are something along the lines of "lol".

In all seriousness, I can't expect much from Achaea's playerbase after I found the letter with only the word (yes word) 'buttsecks' a few dozen times at North of Trees.
Anisu2008-10-18 12:12:55
There are multifold of reasons for it, describing most of them will not be taken well by most people so I will not post them very publicly. There are however many articles about how people kill themselves and others over games like WoW. Some of them very accuratly describe why we do things like that.
So my short answer is. 'Human nature'

I completely agree with the spirit of what you're saying, but you're also taking a completely different context into it which I wasn't referring to. Yes, if you're getting harassed because of anything to do with real life then that is one thing, but to allow (Yes, allow, because if you don't take steps to prevent it from happening after the initial incident you are allowing- though in fairness I have no idea how the incident played out in terms of if it was just a one time shot or many over time) someone to control your emotions to the degree that you are put into tears not over real life degredations but over a game, then there is more problems than just a harasser.
Heck, there are people who post on the forums who practically every time they post they are insulted either directly or indirectly and that could be construed as a form of harassment. Whether people want to admit it or not, it's true, and yet I have the feeling that those people aren't sobbing their woes into their pillows at night and there's even a smaller chance that anything will be done about it. So... yep, I do agree that what you've said, but you're also putting an entirely different light on the original issue.

1) This doesn't work. They're still there talking about you, and it's gonna hurt you when OTHER people belive them because they KNEW that you wouldn't know they're talking, and thus take advantage of that in their Nerdrage.
2) This works...but the damage is often still done.
The rest of the post, yes, I agree with.
Case and Point people, no matter how hard you try to ignore somebody, they're still there.

In a sense, you're right. However, I personally tend to think that getting worked up over that sort of thing to be pretty pathetic too. If your friends would buy into something like that, then they aren't your friends. If you care about what non-friends think, you need help.
