See, I'm not looking for people to believe the same things or want the same things or act the same way. And I'm sorry for not reading the article, but I'm trying to multi-task.
When I hear "Nation of Individuals" I get the image of a bunch of people out for themselves. What I am advocating is the idea of a unity that goes beyond all that other stuff, and I honestly believe Obama is talking about that--a unity where it doesn't matter if you're Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Gay, Straight, Republican, or Democrat, but rather a unity where despite everything, we reach out and help and lift up because we are all people, we are all Americans. None of that other stuff matters, believe what you want, do what you want, so long as it doesn't harm others or the collective.
That's a perfect Union, and I think that is a country that we should all be dreaming to live in, and I think that that is the vision of Barack Obama, not a nation where everyone believes exactly like he does about everything, simply where everyone believes that we should all help each other. And I see nothing wrong with that.

Yeah. That's kinda what I'm wonderin too.

Well, Christ, Daganev. One of Rudd's promises was to end the fearmongering and make us one whole nation again, and I Don't see the coppers kicking down my door and screaming "EMBRACE NON INDIVIDUALISM, CITIZEN #25752392."
You don't think you might have just been referring to ending the divisions over race/religion that are so very very public? Even a teensy bit?

let me put it this way.
If the presidant of the united states is talking about us not being a nation of individuals, then he is talking about having the government be involved in making sure that we are not a nation of individuals.
This means, that instead of saying "A person should help thier neighbor", you are now saying "A person must help their neighbor". Which means now there is going to be a government program, that somehow says "You must spend 3 hours each day, doing your neighbor's yard work" or something similiar.
If you don't realise why this is a problem /scares people, then I suggest you ask yourself if you want to have a Draft again.

You are reading way too far into it. Obama has never suggested such a thing. He has, for instance, promoted the idea that people should have the choice to receive the same benefits from helping their neighbor as from killing people in another country, and I think that's great. Has it said "Everyone must take part in community service"? No. But he has said "Hey, if you're willing to reach out and help your small community, then I'm willing to make sure the larger community helps you too."
That is greatly different than what you are suggesting.
Edit: The community service thing i'm referring to is where Obama wants to give people taking part in long-term community service similar benefits that are received from joining the military, namely schooling and such.

From Obama's website:
No, I don't think I'm reading too much into it.
He could have easily just have said "we are not a nation of blue state, or red states" etc... but no, he also decided to talk about how we are NOT a nation of individuals, and how we all must sacrifice for his change.
His plans are fine, if they are tempered by a uniquely american way of doing things, but with his fanboi base, it scares me that people will just do whatever he says to do, and not think critically about what they are supporting.
I think we all saw with Bush how easy it is for the president to take a small good idea, and push it to its ends so that it becomes a very very bad idea.

He didn't specifically say "We must all sacrifice for the Good of CHANGE! ALL HAIL TZEENTCH."
He said they must come together, and that would involve sacrifices.

How is any of this bad? I don't understand. OMG, he wants kids to learn some responsibility? You mean, other than science and math and history requirements, they have to help people now? Damn, that's horrible.
And he wants to reward people for helping their community as well as working at diners? Why is that bad?
And how is supporting the nonprofit sector a bad thing? Non-profit organizations do a lot of good.
He's not forcing anyone to do anything, except for teenagers.. and, uh, hate to tell you this, but it's already a law for them to go to school and all that stuff anyway, so what's the harm in them learning something new along side math and science and english?
I just don't see how those are anything but beneficial to the nation.

You're seriously suggesting Obama fly commercial. Think about that.
No I'm not, though I can see where you might think that. I'm suggesting that he find some other means to get to someplace that doesn't cost $400k. That is all. He could have even gone with a smaller private jet for very much less.
But hey, I'm wasting my time. Not only was the country suckered into voting for the vastly inferior candidate, but I'm talking to Obama supporters, and we all know logic is lost on those.

Obviously. We're all a bunch of flag-burning, terrorist-loving, Marxist fanatics who want nothing more than to turn the Good Ol' US of A into an Orwellian utopia. There's just no reasoning with that.

As I posted before....
- Everyone who is so distraught about the '08 election will realize that Obama will have higher than a 27% approval rating.
- People who think the world is over because Obama is elected will remember that they supported Bush in '04 and '00.
- Likewise, some people won't realize the irony in that.

Honestly, it's hard for me to take a lot of political discussions/comments seriously, because so many of them are knee-jerk reactions.

Obama voters, many times over. Plus, Bush did better then Gore or Kerry would have done. And don't forget that our current economy problems aren't Bush's fault, its the democrats that wanted to give credit to everyone and their brother, even if they couldn't afford to pay back their debts. Then, then a problem started to surface, it was the democrats that didn't want to do anything about it. And, now, when the :censor: has hit the fan, its suddenly Bush's fault and McCain takes the fall for it. Pure idiocy.

Ha, thats only partly it. The other part is that Obama is just about the anti-me when it comes to nearly everything. And I am a smart individual that knows what is best for me and the country, so clearly a inexperienced candidate such as Obama with so, so many questionable things in his background isn't what the country needs at a time of war and depression.

Tough luck. You're stuck with him for four years. This sort of conversation happens after every election.
"The country is going to collapse under!"
" will be the worst president ever!"
"I can't believe that over half the nation was stupid enough to vote for! They must be absolute morons!"
Take a look around. We're not British yet, or Japanese, or Korean. Country's still standing. If every president was the worst one ever, we have never done anything right. As for the 'people are stupid' comment...refer to my previous post. Ah hell, I know none of you will, so I'll give you the gist...
PEOPLE VOTE IN THEIR BEST INTERESTS. IT DOES NOT MAKE THEM INHERENTLY STUPID IF THEY DISAGREE WITH YOU.
The election is over, Obama will be president. Some people will benefit more than others, that's the way its always been. Hell, some people benefitted under Nazi Germany, and Soviet Russia too, but that doesn't mean jack in the long term.
