(why are third parties so impossible anyway)

Most third parties are one issue parties. One of the other two parties, will just take the position of the third party, and make it its won.

You would need a large national campaign on all major issues to create a third party, which requires a lot of money, which is hard to get, if people feel there is no chance in you winning.

but I think soon there will be a new party with people like McCain, Liberman, Bloomberg, Shwartezenger, Ventura, and another famous current Democrat that I can't remember right now, but in 2006 he/she went on my list.

One thing I do not understand is why your election system is so complicated instead of being a simple sum of votes.

Read the Federalist Papers, particularly the ones by Alexander Hamilton. America has a Representative Democracy.
As a grade school summary, the purpose of the electoral college is to serve as a buffer from the popular vote, to mitigate the inevitable rise of Factionalism. The founder's theory was that Factions were more focused on self interest on what the government could do for them than serving the people.

I believe (ie not sure) this is one of the main reasons American politics are dominated by two political parties (historical exceptions being of course the Anti-Masonic Party and Bull Moose if memory serves).

Essentially what the Federalist Papers show is that the founders all got together and researched all different examples of successful government (iterations of English gov, Venetian, etc.) in an attempt to find the underlying principles of a flexible and successful democracy.

@ Racism in the election. I don't think its going to play that much of a part. On Sept 15 when the stock market fell significantly, there was a concomitant increase in Obama's poll numbers. I think it was a Gallup Poll.

Sadly, when I asked most of the people I knew why they were voting for their particular candidate (prior to election day), I generally got blank stares, or ridiculous answers like... "Because she is totally bangable."

Amarysse come celebrate with me that the youth of America is finally participating in the political process. All that money on outreach. grin.gif

PS: I'd hit that.

Yay! cheer.gif

I left work at 3 and rode two buses to get as close as I could to my voting place and then walked the 0.9 miles (according to google maps) to get the rest of the way there. Once there, I voted yes for the lottery, no for the adoption ban and did my little part to elect Obama. I was the 879th person to cast my ballot at 4:30pm. Then, I took my I Voted sticker another quarter of a mile up the road to the Starbucks and got a free coffee. Then, I went another quarter of a mile or so and got a dollar off a smoothie at Planet Smoothie (yogurt, banana, strawberry and blueberry, yum!). Then, caught the bus to get home. Luckily, I only needed one bus to get home.

The bus passed through this intersection where Obama supporters were on one side and McCain supporters were on the other, and they seemed to be having a contest to see which side could get the most honks or something. It was really funny! The Obama side had someone wearing a Palin mask holding an Obama sign. Everyone on the bus thought that was pretty funny. laugh.gif

Now, I'm gonna watch the news and see how it all turns out! smile.gif

Watching the election stuff now, the pre-stuff which showed clips of the campaigning was hilarious. laugh.gif

A little late, but eh... A friend gave me this:

Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap,
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise,
I peered out of my window;
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet,
They wanted my pay,
To give to the others
Who worked not a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a flash
Jumped back on his bandwagon
With all of my cash.

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart.
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

"On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi"
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note
IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM
GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

Just got back from voting. I actually voted 4 hours ago, but i went to my folks house for half an hour, then took about an hour and half to drive home to my dorm, then went and talked with a couple of my professors.

I personally think this election will be a toss up. It's way too close to call. There could be a huge amount of Obama supporters that were just talk, but in the end, don't come through for him, and same for McCain. The MSM is incredibly biased anymore, and I rarely listen to them, and the only reason I have the tv on now is just for laughs. I think either way, we'll get more redistribution of wealth, which is just disgusting to me. I think I actually heard some democrat say on the news 'The idea that you are entitled to keep the wealth you earn is simple and ridiculous.' We need spending and tax cuts across the board

unless the numbers were just random, I was the 803rd person to cast a ballot at 7:50 am. tongue.gif

my wife was number 802, and I doubt/hope they weren't assigning numbers based on who we were, and causing the votes to be traced back to us.

McCain is winning. ohmy.gif

Also: My state was called within 1 minute of the polls closing. *cough*

You did...

I think the full quote was, "Some people have this simple notion that the wealthy are entitled to keep their wealth. ... And its just doesn't work anymore" or something similar. It really scared the crap out of me.

found the full quote:

JIM MORAN: Now, in the last 7 years, we have had the highest corporate profit ever in American history, hightest corporate profit. We've had the highest productivity. The American worker has produced more per person then at any time. But it hasn't been shared. And that's the problem, because we have been guided by a Republican administration who believes in the simplistic notion that people who have wealth are entitled to keep it, and they have an antipathy towards means of redistributing wealth. And they may be able to sustain that for a while, but it doesn't work in the long run.

Like I said, our delegates were assigned within 1 minute of the polls closing. I don't think a pity vote's going to help here. wink.gif

Vermont: Obama 0% reporting 3

Yeah.

It's this way every year, too (for the previous two elections, as well as this one). I don't think they even try to count us before they allocate our delegates.
Acrune2008-11-05 00:50:06
I like how Maine has 3 votes in so far.
Unknown2008-11-05 00:59:37
McCain isn't winning tongue.gif Like, three states have been called so far. Tiny Vermont (for Obama) and bigger South Carolina and Kentucky (McCain).

Also, people going on about Socialism and Redistribution of Wealth make me giggle. happy.gif

EDIT:
Whoops. Looks like more States are being called...

Looks like the whipping's begun.

I do not honestly believe he knows what the hell he is talking about, unless he is a PINKO COMMIE, DIE.

Seriously, that is marxist. Spread the wealth? I'm sorry, but I, in all honesty, could not absolutely support being forced to spread the wealth. That is marxist.
That's not to say I don't support some kind of incentive program given to people that willingly "spread the wealth." But being forced to lose your hard-earned money is simply prejudice.

Are you talking about the electoral college votes you get? Erm. They haven't been assigned yet. They don't vote until the 15th of December, and even then they don't have to vote for who the election says to vote for. While about half of the states have laws prohibiting that,, theoretically they are free to vote for anyone.

Edit: Replace Communism with Marxist.

Why does it make you giggle?

You like living in a socialist state?

Or do you just think that the congressman from Virginia has no influence?
