As I walked down a seedy part of England (More than you think) and I kept seeing shops with little trinkets. Now I thought, what about a skill in artisan which allows for trinkets or ornamentals similar to accessories in tailoring. A few examples (And ornaments can be moved between rooms).
Candle holder
Mini statues (Different than figurines, also made out of any gem)
Tea set
Replica swords
Clay animals
Little animal figurines (Made out of clay or gems)
Things suspended in glass (http://www.zrwl.cn/images/mom/LC-6041.gif)
Things floating in water.
Things like these haha so yeah what do you think? Too many things in manses can't be moved.

Why get a replica sword? You could just as easily have one forged.
Doman2008-12-19 02:31:22
Probably as a wall-mount
Fania2008-12-19 05:27:28
It looks like a lot of fun! Oh, while they are at it they should add like teddy bears, dolls, and toys to either Artisan or Tailoring, whichever fits better. Probably the former, because I would really like more people to pick up the Artisan skill.

And how expensive do you think a good master sword is? Some people might not have the gold but would like to have, as it was mentioned, a wall mount.

I think that this is a really good idea, and I hope it becomes something that we can actually use
Amarysse2008-12-21 16:27:43
What would these items actually do that would make them useful or worthwhile? We already have figurines in Lusternia, for example, and artisans can make fighting rings to play with them. Sconces (candle holders) exist already, too, and while I sincerely don't mean to sound derisive, we don't need a slew of knick-knacks lying around that serve no discernible purpose; a bunch of tchotchkes isn't, in my opinion, going to make the artisan trade more interesting, profitable, or viable as a tradeskill.

Maybe not everyone thinks the idea of being able to decorate their manse, guild office, whatever, with nicknacks is a bad idea. Some folks might just like pretty things. They could have a high decay rate so that the game doesn't get filled up with items. Maybe there can be some kind of thing you can do to a nicknack to make it last forever, if you want to keep a family heirloom or something, like how you can have letters made permanent at the post office.
Frankly I think the idea that everything must have a 'benefit' is silly because everyone's got a different idea of what is a benefit. Me? I like pretty things, so having a bunch of pretty little statues in my manse would be an AWESOME benefit. Especailly since you can't make statue-statues in a manse. How else will I have my cool statue garden? And yes, I could write it into the room desc, but how long does a room desc have to be before it gets silly? The whole point of having a statue garden is to be able to look at the statues after all.

I asked what the proposed benefits would be. That's all. Personally, I cringe at the thought of seeing, as I walk into a room:
CODE
A delicate little statue of a faeling girl stands here. A burly igasho statue looms nearby, casting an imposing shadow. An immense statue of Fain, the Red Masque, towers imperiously over its surroundings. A statue of Isune and Maylea stands here, both goddesses skipping through a field of pretty stone flowers. A giant rainbow statue forms a great arch overhead. A bewildering statue of a large statue stands in the corner. A statue of the Basin of Life, perfectly to-scale, is here crushing everything beneath its infinite vastness. A statue of an aethership hovers inexplicably in the air. A statue of Viravain smirks slyly at passers-by. A statue of Estarra is here, squishing a bizarre amalgam of tentacles and teeth beneath Her high-heeled shoe. A statue of a centaur colt is here, weeping silently to himself. A statue of Brennan is here, beside a statue of Rowena, surrounded by statues of the undead underneath a gigantic statue of the Master Ravenwood Tree which is ringed by statues of cauldrons tended by statues of Shayle, Moriana, Nadjia, Astraea, and Talan. An enormous statue of Gorgulu is busily devouring... someone, evidenced only by frantically kicking feet protruding from one of his many mouths. A statue of Lendren is here. A statue of Tael is here. A statue of Rika is here. A statue of Nerra is here. A statue of Synl is here. A statue of Xenthos is here. A statue of Ashai is here. A statue of a giant pink elephant is here. A statue of a rabid, scythe-wielding hamster is here. A statue of the Great White Hart is here. A statue of Nocht is (possibly) here. A statue of Elostian might be here, but you never know! A statue of Eventru stands in the very center of everyone's attention, despite its actual physical orientation. A statue of Urazial the Griefer is here. A statue of a titanic sphinx is here. A statue of a shackled kitten limps pathetically here. A statue of a nightmare looms here. A statue of a pretty rosebush is here. A statue of a wooden door is here. A statue of a mudkip is here. A pretty little porcelain tea set is here.  There are fifteen candleholders here. Twelve figurines of Ironbeard look very jolly here. Ten glass globes containing roses roll about nearby. Three glass globes containing pixies roll about nearby. An artificial plant, rendered in silken ribbon, sits inoffensively nearby. A glass menagerie containing a multitude of tiny glass animals sits here. A miniature ship in a bottle sits on a stand nearby.
Would everyone do that? No. But someone would, and I'm honestly not optimistic enough to think otherwise. (If you've ever walked into the storeroom of a busy shop, imagine all that junk sitting around in rooms in people's manses.) The problem is that while a few odds-and-ends might be fine, like a couple of decorative statues or a fountain or mirrors or somesuch, there are plenty more appropriate things than glass baubles and trinkets to add appeal to the skillset... things that probably will not be used excessively and bloat the system. I understand that you, and many others (myself included) like "pretty" things, and while I don't think this is a terrible idea, I also don't think it's probably the best one to make the tradeskill more worthwhile. If anything, various little trinkets could be bought with a small number of credits from the shop on Avechna's Peak.

What if the limit of furniture in a room included nicknacks? Like, a room can only have what? Four? Five? Peices of furniture in it? Then, it would be that it can only have four or five peices of furniture AND/OR nicknacks in it.

Not a bad idea, but furniture limitations are based on size. They use up a particular percentage of wallspace/floorspace/etc.
Jigan2008-12-21 17:54:53
Why not simply limit it to furniture already in place?
Give art stands. Each stand holds only so many things. A stone pillar stand might be able to hold two knicknacks, or a bust.
Small tables can hold 2-3 items on them. And so on. Personally, I'd love a small art gallery like that, with different busts. Magnagora could upkeep busts of famous Warlords. The issue is, just make it based on how much furniture is there and what kind. A largetable could hold a great deal, but it's also more expensive than most and requires room.
For larger peices of artwork, they can take up room on the floor/wall/ceiling.

Ah, so like, you'd have to look at the furniture to see that there were nicknacks sitting on it? So, you could LOOK AT TABLE and see that there was a bunny statue sitting on it. Then you could LOOK AT BUNNY ON TABLE to see what the bunny statue that is sitting on the table looks like?
Jigan2008-12-21 18:24:11
That, or you can see them normally (Bunny statue sitting on a stone pillar). Whichever works/is easier.

I meant like the full description.

Eh, half a dozen or the other.
Wouldn't it be coding similar to LOOK AT ITEM ON PERSON, for someone who's better at that than me?
