Bioshock

Back to The Real World.

The narrator's story will be told from the "town" perspective. If you're not town... Just enjoy it! =]

You are startled awake as the deafening roar of rushing water fills your ears. The lights flicker overhead in your cabin, and you feel the trembling of the water flooding the decks beneath you. With crazed thoughts gleaming in your mind, you quickly wake the other passengers who are with you and barge out into the corridor, mingling with the barrage of other cruisers who are working their way frantically upwards. As you manage to push your way to the hall, the pressure builds further and torrents of freezing ocean water flood the halls. Abandoning those you had helped out, you work desperately and instinctively to escape from the doomed vessel. After almost half an our of tiring exertion, you find yourself floating in the vast and empty ocean, watching as the remains of the twisted metal cruise liner sink into the clutches of the cold waters.

Turning frantically around yourself, you manage to spot, in the distance, a mist-wreathed island with a tall building atop, glowing like a beacon in the darkness. Working your way towards it, you climb the moss-covered, slimy stairs and mingle with a small group of other passengers, each as distraught and confused as you. Some time passes in silence as you wait for any other survivors, eyes keenly pressed on the horizon as you stare with bitter acceptance.

"We cannot stand out here all night. We should head inside," ventures one passenger.

With trepidation, the group agrees unanimously to move inside. As the last enters, the doors is blown shut by the wind, and all are plunged into blackness. Eventually, lights flicker on, and overhead can be seen the hulking visage of a man, sculpted from bronze, and emblazoned with the words, "NO GODS OR KINGS. ONLY MAN."

You all look at each other cautiously, as one brave passenger carefully explores the area, yelling as he discovers a small shuttle-cum-sphere held in place above a deep, vertical tunnel. Others casually filter in, proclaiming that the entire building seems to lead only to this place. Resignation fills your heart, and you realise it is the only way forward. You all pile in, closing the door, and sealing your journey. The bathysphere sinks downwards, evermore, and for a time all but your sense of hearing is void: the heavy panting of those around you becomes unbearable.

Finally, you all break through the darkened depths, and the view before you is spectacular: both instantly exciting and frightening. A towering city, erupting from the ocean floor, half aglow with luxurious neon signs and half broken and twisted, bleeding bubbles of precious air. Your route is clearly pre-determined, and you weave smoothly through buildings, above and below translucent tunnels that tie them all together. You are suddenly once more without sight as you abruptly enter a building, and the trajectory jolts quickly upright, and then to a stop. Your eyes eventually adjust to the lack of light, and blurry details slowly sharpen. The bathysphere door creaks open, and the eerie sensation of being cruelly exposed, as if naked, floods down your neck in a fit of tingling waves.

Unified as a group once more, you all slowly file out of the pod, and take in your desolate surroundings. Exquisite decorations that once hung from the walls have been torn down and broken into pieces, which are scattered across the lush red carpet. Splatters of blood adorn the walls, glistening in the damp light, and the slow creaks of the strained infrastructure are everpresent. Small, twisted creatures run across the floor before you, never straying from shadows, imperceptible but so very there. Your eyes drift upwards, and you can just barely perceive the words embroidered in a massive sheet of fine silk hung from the ceiling.

"Welcome to Rapture."

It is now Day 1.

You move various tunnels within the strange and unknown city, looking with horror at the corpses strewn casually by the walls, blood-stained and battered. Huddling closer together, you walk forward slowly, taking your time to become as comfortable as you can with your surroundings as you traverse ever deeper into the underwater labyrinth. A few stray splicers spy you all from the distance, though they keep tightly burrowed in the shadows, made obvious only by their glowing evil eyes that are fixed endlessly upon you all.

Slowly pacing to the end of a tunnel, you pass through a massive iron doorway and enter what might once have been a peaceful glade. Now, however, it is positively frightful. Benches have been obliterated, leaving planks of wood lying all over the place. The grass is long and untended, rife with weeds and thorny plants, as well as the odd fleshy body part.

Murmurs of excitement run through the group at an overturned vending machine nearby, and the grumbling stomachs reveal that some are already hungry. Inching ever closer, you come to the unfortunate realisation that it is not food that has spilled, but medical supplies of some kind. Soon, it is every man for himself, and you lurch forward in an effort to grab one of the syringes. Some of the group manage, clinging tightly to it, whilst others look on with both bewilderment and disappointment.

So, I guess since we're all cruisers, we should be suspicious of anyone native to Rapture in the canon.

Vote: Thiden for...pararhyming with Ryan, kinda.

Anyone have any guesses as to what the planks of wood are for, by the way? And is the medical supplies stuff just fluff or did anyone get a PM describing their receiving any?
Furien2008-12-19 10:25:54
I didn't seem to grab anything.
Vote: Myrkr

I'd guess an ability, or fluff to make us paranoid

Vote: Saran

Because if random.org is suspicious of you before I get to it, there's already a problem.
Kiradawea2008-12-19 12:18:20
Planks of wood eh? Well, it might be flavour... or we might be able to investigate them.

As for the medicine, I'm not sure but if I remember correctly, the game had some kind of drug that could make you stronger, smarter, better and so on. But who knows, perhaps those who use the drugs turn into mafia... or perhaps they get a night ability... or perhaps it's even more flavour. Regardless...

ME LIKE! That was a GREAT introduction Ilyarin.
Shaddus2008-12-19 12:21:08
So.... Rapture is a planet?
Kiradawea2008-12-19 12:21:38
No, it's a city beneath the ocean... if I have my Bioshock knowledge right.
Shiri2008-12-19 12:26:23
There were two types of hypos: health ones (I'd like to assume it's these because it's medical supplies, but I dunno) and EVE, which was fuel for psionic powers. Overuse of the latter made you go crazy and you ended up splicing your genes too much and turning into a splicer (those glowy-eyed things going on there, standard enemies of the game.)

So either the mafia could be preexisting members of rapture, or those who used the hypos, or whoever the hell's fault it is that we're here in the first place, or multiple of the above (it was a sabotaged plane in the game.)
Ilyarin2008-12-19 12:26:40
If anyone wants a run down on Bioshock, just send me a PM and I will fill you in.

Rapture is a sprawling underwater empire on the sea floor in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Shiri2008-12-19 12:29:45
P.S while I'm not sure if the hypos are fluff or not, I'm pretty sure the planks are relevant in some way cause he bolded it.
Kiradawea2008-12-19 12:37:36
Hey Ilyarin, can we search the planks or something? Do we have to use specific commands to do that? Do you have a list, or should we just try bolding stuff like... Jump on planks
Ilyarin2008-12-19 12:40:06
Kiradawea somehow musters up the ability to romp around, jumping up and down on the nearby planks of broken wood. She falls and hurts her ankle, bringing an abrupt end to her overzealous playfulness. Oh dear!

I'll happily humour your attempts, but... Random guessing won't avail, I'm afraid. If you can do something with the environment, you'll likely know about it.
