I would never abandon the bookbinding trade because it is such a part of Linaeve's RP and it's very needed in the city. As a bookbinder from the beginning, though, I have to say I wish our trade could be a little more involved *creatively* in shops and making a gold sovereign.
In my shop, I do sell magic scrolls, but I wish I could display all the creativity I put into my bookbinding cartels there. Here are my ideas:
- Custom letters. Bookbinders would have a new ability, the ability to design and create custom letters rather than the dull old white letters to be sold in shops. I've idea'd this, and plan to do it again.
- Personal books allowed to be sold in shops. Not org books - but for instance, somehow scrolls, journals and books, etc. could be sold in shops and then become private to the buyer once they are purchased. Or perhaps just journals and books!
As it stands, people just do not go out of their way to purchase personal books or to investigate the myriad of designs we craft. Yet guild advancement often calls for personal writings and many keep diaries or journals for RP purposes. Making organization books an 'order only' deal would be fine - but I think allowing such custom personal designs to be sold in shops would not only benefit bookbinders in their creative sense, but add such an interesting new element to the game. Especially for scholars, librarians, what have you.
I honestly hope this will be considered as I know other bookbinders and those just interested in books express agreement with me! Pleeease.

I like all those ideas

I like all of those ideas as well. The ability to customize stationary for letters in particular as well since I could personally think of a few instances in which I would have preferred the use of something more formal than the simple white envelopes that are currently available.
Though, with the clear combat focus of the envoys these days, I do wish there were a more direct way to suggest such trade changes other than the Idea mechanic (which doesn't give even a notice of whether the idea has been looked at or not) of the ideas subforum where such ideas (like my ninja bond probe suggestion ) are first seen, liked, then eventually forgotten because of other things that come up.

I'd also like an option to waive the outlay. I know a lot of business goes away because, "Oh, right. 2 leather and...1,000 gold?! I'll come back later...". At times, most people just buy letters and be done with it (Not skilled in code, maybe the option adds a flag that is a "No printingpress" flag or sommat?) With maybe an option to make outlays later.
Or, just make Outlay a skill itself. No outlay inherent, but if you want, find a binder with the skill, have them make an outlay, and then you can make copies, instead of it being there already.

No one's actually said, "WHAT?!" to outlay before, at least in my experience. Most people are happy to pay a little extra for the services of a bookbinder, too.
But I like these ideas! I could run a bookstore! More people buy personal items such as scrolls - well, especially scrolls - instead of organisational items, so this could really help us out.

Usually, it's the younger players, the people who want to write the most who are surprised by the outlay.

I am totally in support for all those ideas, as Linaeve well knows. It's really upsetting that things like that -always- get overlooked for the sake of skills, pvp and new areas or events. Those little RP things matter to us too!
Not to start a thread for something so tiny, I'll just sneak in a letter-related idea here: allow artisan crafted boxes to be sent instead of letters. It irritates me greatly that you can, and have to, put enormous items into letters for deliveries. Not only would this buff Artisans, it would also be a lot more realistic. For the lazy, perhaps give the option to request a parcel for 200-300 coins at the post office. Ah, and limit letters to be able to contain money or scrolls/pamphlets only!

Most people seem to think the outlay is the bookbinders fee for doing the work. The rare times I've played a bookbinder, I made almost NO money. Ever.
I fully support this set of ideas.

Linaeve has some great ideas.
Wouldn't it be possible to use the same flag for books that is used for items bought from the artifacts shop, so that they have an owner after?
I wouldn't mind it if everyone had the ability to set the author, so you can buy books for friends and, if the friend doesn't like it, they can regift it.
Bookbinding has a lot of potential. I wish I could sell some of the books that the cartel I leads makes.

Wait, I'm confused, what's the outlay for..?
Jigan2009-01-02 01:42:00
Outlay is essentially the setup used to make a scroll. It's what allows you to have a bookbinder use printingpress and copy it. It's a static fee for each kind of book. Scrolls are 1,000, Journals are 3,000 I think, and it goes up.
There's also no choice. You pay the gold, or you don't get a scroll.

In essence, the gold outlay is treated as another commodity.
I'd love some good additions to bookbinding. Some real uses for languages would be great-- maybe an area where the denizens only speak their native language, and you have to have a bookbinder translate. Or treat GHELP/CHELP/CLHELP scrolls like actual scrolls in some small way. I've heard the argument plenty of times that we don't need to have anything stored in the guild libraries because we can do it all in GHELPS anyway.

I'd totally love an even where those who have language specs forget how to speak common. So Dracnari, Faeling, Elfen, Lobo, etc, stop being able to speak common. That would be stupid fun, I think. But it probably won't happen.
Shiri2009-01-02 06:03:43
It's amazing how that idea crops up so many times, independently, over the years.

Oooh! That would be fun! Even if it were only a temporary thing! They'd need bookbinders to act as translators. It'd be awesome.

Only thing bookbinders have is Divine. Which all the Verses are written in.

Hahaha, I wish. Only illithoid can do that. The skinny soulless race that amazingly has 16 constitution.

Oops, sorry. You both get mindsense but not the languages thing.
