What happens is that you lose the ability to DNS Lookup anything, but your internet connection is still active, meaning any tcp connections you already have (Vent, MSN, IRC) don't go away. You just can't browse the web or connect to new games, etc. Some mmo's will renegotiate as you zone, so you'll drop out of those too.

I've seen that too (particularly when we're playing with our DNS server here, so I can replicate it at will) but it doesn't affect connections already existing in zMUD, telnet, or MUSHclient, just as it doesn't affect existing connections in IM or chat, so it doesn't seem to match what's been reported.

Well, he said his Steam voice chat and Vent are still connected, which are both just tcp connections he makes when he first gets on, but can't surf and his games "freeze up." Depending on what he's playing, that is similar behavior. WoW will renegotiate your connection when you zone, so if you can't make new connections it will drop you out of the game. Might be something similar was why I said it.

I suppose now that you mentioned it, I assumed he meant that included Lusternia (else why is he posting it here?) but he didn't actually say so. So maybe so. I'd do an ipconfig release and renew to test that hypothesis, checking the DNS address before and after, as well as whether DNS can resolve.
