Collegium Quests

Do new players usually complete these? I ask because I tried a couple of the ones in Serenwilde and they seem to be extremely hard for new players. I know they were for me. I tried to do some "nut" quest. I think it might have been a history quest? At any rate, the nut reset before I even found two of the denizens. Then, the denizens wanted me to go talk to other denizens to get more information before they'd bless the nut. With all this running around and trying to find these people, it looks like the quest items such as the nuts would stick around in a player's inventory for quite a while. If new players are like me, they have to use maps. Then, the maps don't show where the people are located. Which means, having to look around through every single room until you find one. Then, having that one tell you to go find another and get information from them. See how this would take forever to complete?

I'm not sure about the other quests. I finally got the influencing one done. It didn't seem as bad. This one, however, seems crazy hard and the time limit on it is extremely short. I intend to try some of the others and see if they're doable.

Note: This really isn't a complaint. I just think that maybe they need to be looked into unless I just have no clue what to do with them. The cghelps on them are very vague. They answer a couple questions, then that's it. Nothing else, so there is no useful information available.

Most novices do the quests. It doesn't seem like most of them have much trouble either, either because of the help files or because they just ask stuff. We even have most of the directions to the people you want in CGHELP DIRECTIONS. That's in Serenwilde, anyway, I don't know how they are in other orgs.
Unknown2009-01-31 05:45:32
I know Glomdoring has directions for it's Geography quest.

I also believe that Serenwilde is the only organization who's history lesson actually requires the novice to go find information, as well as answer questions before having their nut blessed.

Yeah, but isn't your scroll....

QUOTE (Serenwilde Directions to a random platform)
Find the large rock. Head west until you find the dead tree laying to the north north west, and go straight north east, heading where the old creek used to be. Hang a left at the rotting crow carcass, and climb up the hidden ladder, evading the traps until you find a platform.

No. That's the CHELP one. I think the only reason we still have that one is because of some vague notion that novices might prefer the annoying directions instead of ones they can easily follow for immersion or whatever. We always (when I'm online) direct them instead to the CGHELP one, which reads more like:

QUOTE
The Glade (from Mother, without portals): north, northwest, northeast,
northeast, northwest, north, west, west, northewest, west, north, north,
east, north, west, north, north, north, east, north, northeast, east,
north.

As for the information finding, btw, the same mobs which answer the questions are the five you have to give the nut to anyway so you don't actually have to go anywhere new.

You forgot the ball pit, the reconstruction of the silver monkey statue and the infamous temple guardians.

I completed them because I'm an OCD perfectionist who gets caught up on small details, but some of them are just really frustrating. Like the power one, ugh. 30 pixies later I get my nut.

You can get really screwed by that one, I wish it weren't like that. I don't know if anyone explained to you why that happened but it seems to only complete the quest for you on every 10th pixie, and that means if someone ELSE gets the 10th pixie, you don't and have to wait a long time even for a chance.

That is really brutal. Funny how the scroll says "usually 3 pixies" or something like that.

I guess its sort of necessary for newbies to get oriented with that quest though because its, well, how the commune gets power. Atleast until they can bash water.
Everiine2009-01-31 06:18:34
Every single person you need to find in the History Quest is listed in the CGHELP scroll along with detailed directions for how to get there. Likewise, every single destination you must go to in the ultra cool Geography Quest, including the random location in the forest, is listed with detailed instructions for getting there. The power quest is definitely annoying, and the planes quest can be a challenge if you don't have basic planar skills. But every other quest is practically spelled out in our scrolls.

I really don't think it's that necessary because the total monthly input of pixies is so pathetic, but it's an ok newbie quest. I just wish it -were- consistently as easy as 3.

Maybe it can be tweaked a bit. I dunno.

If I was new to MUDs and I had to do that quest I would rip my hair right out and just close the client.

Mag's quests ...

Geography:
Easy enough. Go to various people and hand them a patrol report. Directions included in cghelp, although we still get a few questions.

History:
See above, except you say history.

Influence:
This one is a real censor.gif . You need to get two items from an absolute pile of people. These items decay really really fast. You need one item before you get the other, and often, if you get the wrong item first it decays before you get the other.

Hunting:
Our equivalent of the healing quests for other collegiums. They give a few afflictions (fear/paralysis/sleep+damage). They're a bit tanky, but not too bad, and you get citywide conglut.

Planes:
This is a standard.

Power:
I made a thread on this somewhere, so I'm fairly certain my views on it are out there somewhere. Basically, a newbie is going to have a lot of trouble completing it on their own. Much more so than the hunting quest. Generally need an elder citizen to help you.
Unknown2009-01-31 06:31:38
Influence is the easiest one in my opinion.
Unless there is a large influx of new players doing it at the same time, then you have to compete for the mobs.

Ahh, this is what messed me up. I was reading this help, CGHELP HISTORY:

Composed by: Lendren
Composed on: 9th of Roarkian, 211 CE

HISTORY ==============================================================

Q) Eredhion didn't give me anything when I agreed to help him.
A) Try greeting him again and when he makes an offer, just SAY YES. He
might not respond to your chosen emote, or if you do something else
first, or take too long to answer.

Q) How can I get Miakoda to tell me the story of the Great Trees?
A) Be sure to ask her to tell you the story of the Moonhart Mother Tree,
using the tree's full name, properly spelled.

That was what I meant when I said that the information was vague. Most of my gripe was with the nut resetting so quickly. For instance, I gave it to Miakoda, who told me to talk with someone who's name started with a "T", I believe. I could never get to him because by the time I made my way there, the nut decayed. Of course, while doing that, I went to another, closer location, which was Goldie. In the process of my trying to get information from her, I lost the nut.

This is also what's given when you first accept the quest:

Eredhion, Tender of Moonharts says, "The nut needs the blessings of the people
of Serenwilde before it can flourish and grow. Give this nut to Miakoda, Abeytu,
Goldie, Poloma, and Tokota each to gain their blessings. You may also wish to
ask them about any history they might know while talking to them."
NOTE: TOUCH the nut to see who you still need to go to before the quest is
complete.

This is what Miakota said after I handed her the nut:

Miakoda, Maiden of the Moonhart says, "This is the spirit of a fruit of
Moonhart. I will give it my blessing, Tarus, if you can tell me the name of the
High Priestess of the Moon at the time of the Tainting of the land."
Miakoda, Maiden of the Moonhart says, "If you don't know the answer to my
question, Tarus, you may wish to talk to Tokota about the days of the Taint
Wars."

Then, this is what Goldie said after I handed it to her:

Goldie the Leprechaun says, "So mate, you want me te do what? Bless this thing?
Well ye gotta answer this question first! Who are the great fae lords of the
Serenwilde?"
Goldie the Leprechaun exclaims, "If ye don't know the answer, mate, ask Abeytu
about the lass Ellindel, who helped heal all us fae!"

Between all that, looking at the web site's map page, and trying to get to the locations, the nut decayed and I just moved on to a different quest.

I'm not saying it's a bad quest. There just wasn't much information available in the CGHELP HISTORY help and the main quest item decayed too quickly (for me) to finish it. As for the other quests, I got the influencing, planes, and geography done just fine without anything popping out of my inventory.
Everiine2009-01-31 08:06:49
That quest is pretty cut and dry. Miakoda asks you about the High Priestess. If you don't know the answer, she tells you to go find Tokota. CGHELP DIRECTIONS shows you how to get to Tokota. Ask him about the Taint Wars and he'll give you the name of the High Priestess. Head on back to Miakoda and repeat, but this time give her the name. The process is the same with everyone else you have to talk to in that quest. It may take a long time to do, but I never had the nut decay on me.

Did none of you losers get Eventru's epic reference?

Sigh. Best show ever.

I indeed got it. I remember jumping when the guards would attack the kids, swinging across the moat, and screaming at the TV "THE HEAD GOES ON TOP YOU DUMB MOTHA- censor.gif ", just in less colorful language.

There just wasn't much information available in the CGHELP HISTORY help

The main problem here is just that all the quests used to be in one big CGHELP QUESTIONS and then we split off the five quests into their own files because it was too cumbersome. The trouble now is if you start in one of the quest-specific ones without reading CGHELP QUESTIONS which has all the basic information for all of them. I just added a footnote to the five quest ones referring back to the 'parent' scroll.

If you have any other questions you think should be in there, please let me know. We've tried to catch all the frequently asked questions (without actually giving away the quests, and still making you have to go do stuff and learn from it along the way).

The nut resetting is very frustrating, and we can't do much about that. It would be nice (hint hint!) if the reset time on it was reset every time you got one of the answers (in fact I think I'll IDEA that). But if it's any consolation, the second time through goes so much faster. (I added something to CGHELP HISTORY about that, too.)

We're eager to improve the scrolls, but we need you to tell us what improvements you'd like to see! Otherwise we don't even know there's a problem.

As for Glomdoring, I find most of the collegium quests fine. The only problem is if someone just recently swept Faethorn and took all the honeycombs. Then again, the History quest is one of the easiest collegium quests to do, so I guess it cancels out.
