Hey there,
Yup, not only am I new to these forums, but those who've seen me about in Lusternia know I'm a Celestian and a Tahtetso. Yeah, I know I've painted a big target on the back of my head here, but I thought my newness would help people give me the benefit of a doubt. I guess I'm still a newbie when it comes to the game, despite the fact I've been playing for about 3-4 real-world months...maybe I'm not considered a newbie at this point, but when I engage in PvP combat, I get pwned and made to feel a newbie almost every time.
As a (relative) newbie, then, one thing that really trips me up in combat, PvP or otherwise, are afflictions. Be it simply being knocked to the ground or having spiders come out of my mouth and nose whenever one happens I get rendered pretty much powerless. Seeing as there's so many afflictions and so many cures I often lose track of which does what, and on top of that there's so much text flying by on my screen I often miss whatever affliction hit me.
So I ask you, please help a newbie out, despite his Celestiness and Tahtetsoness - how can I make myself more viable in combat (PvP or otherwise) in the face of these afflictions? I know triggers are an option (maybe the only option) but there's so many different status messages for each affliction I wouldn't know where to begin. I do apologize if this question has been asked before, so if it has just point me to where it has and I'll learn from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The triggers are the only option.
If you check in the mechanics forums, there are "systems" you can load up on a client like MUSHclient, meaning it covers all the curing of afflictions for you and you just have to concentrate on your offence. Doing everything yourself will probably involve learning how to code. There should be a giant list of afflictions in the combat forums by Forren.

I am currently in the process of converting Forren's trigger list to spreadsheet format, which I believe may be more useful in general when you're trying to build your own system (I know it will be for me). I'm also considering importing it to a mysql database and writing a little webapp to sort through it by affliction name.

Actually, I know I'm going to at least import into the database, if for no other reason than auto-loading my affliction triggers from it.

Yeah, coding is really the only option. Once in bygone times of yore I used to manual, but the density and number of afflictions in the game has increased to the point where you can't really do that anymore.

I used to manual on other IRE games between using systems. I lost my MM2K one, which made me resort to manual due to a pressing situation in the game while I built a new one in zMUD.
I cannot imagine manual curing in Lusternia, due to what Shamarah said. The density of afflictions is just huge and you also have to deal with deepwounds application of health elixer, etc etc. It would be a nightmare in my head.

Brain damage due to afflictions ooc, apply good system = cure!
Brain damage due to afflictions ooc, system loop = cancer.
