I went there with Ceren and two other non-demigods today. At level 60 with about 3600 health, I died within three rounds. While I am not sure because I didn't review the log, I think that they may team the last attacker.

Mhmm, so make sure that you're not the last to attack before the the mobs attack.

They don't team the last attacker. However, if they've been hit, they hit whoever last hit them (unless they move.)

They were probably using me as a meat shield purposely.

Actually there's a sort of threshold you have to reach of badasses to non-badasses so that the monsters die quickly but plenty of them spawn.
