Yes, this idea came from me playing too much of another video game, the air combat game Tom Clancy's HAWX to be more precise. And I do admit - even to me, it sounded silly at first. But then I looked at the thread in this forum about big aetherships, and I suddenly thought...maybe this could be a cool idea.
Here's what I was thinking - allow people to build huge aetherships, but have it work this way. Instead of having guns, the biggest aetherships in Lusternia would be built like aircraft carriers in the real world. They'd have, instead of guns that can instakill, fighter jet-like doohickeys that individual players can climb in and fly about. The planes on these carriers would be totally reliant on the carrier for fuel and support, and they'd be the carrier's sole line of defense and attack.
I thought this might be a good idea because I think it'd allow for big aetherships without making them overpowered and broken. Just imagine, when these big aetherships come under fire, the tension generated by players scrambling the carrier's planes to protect it, instead of already just sitting in its guns and boringly picking off the lesser ships one by one with a single salvo. And when these carriers fight each other, their planes would go at it in spectacular dogfights.
Right now this is all I can think of to support this idea, but I think it'd be pretty cool. And I know the next question about this idea - wouldn't this be a bit too much for a medieval-like fantasy setting? Well, I figured, if you're already allowing flying airships with energy cannons, this idea wouldn't be too big of a stretch. It's the next logical step, really. But please let me know what you think! (Although if you do find this idea too silly, please be constructive instead of nasty in saying so.)

If someone can, there was a topic about this about 6-7 months ago.

It doesn't work so well because no matter how big your ship is you can only have 3 turrets in it, and each turret does about the same amount of damage. A medium sized ship shouldn't be dying in one blast no matter what, and a large ship is already limited in amount in can dish out to the same as a smaller ship.

Oh. That's what I get for not searching the forums before posting an idea. I sowwy.

Oh pssh, don't worry about that. It's so far buried I couldn't find the one I was looking for anyways. I was just noting that if someone could find it we can pull up a lot of discussion real fast.

Found with a forum search in the Ideas forum using "carrier*" as a search string. There are a number of other hits as well.

Wouldn't it end up needing even more players?

Wrong one. I was looking for one which I vaguely recall posting in.
Either way, a bunch of ideas were posted, but the problem ended up being difficult to code, too much work to go into it, and a few other things, I think.

I love how badly my memory distorts things.
