Knights of the Old Republic was an outstanding game in my book. It was like the perfect session of D&D (its mechanics) with a Starwars theme. The good ending that I got was somewhat of a let-down, but all and all I enjoyed the game thoroughly. It could have been longer, of course.

Now I am thinking of doing one of two things. I can play the first game again, although I tend to remember plot verbatum when I am replaying something, or I can grab a used copy of the second and give that a fresh try. I have heard mixed and very vague reviews of the second game in comparison to the first. What do you think?

Some of the characters in the second version aren't as developed as they came in the first. The whole 'being a Jedi' thing is much more common, too- almost everyone you meet has the potential to become one if you get enough 'influence' with them.

All in all, it's not a bad game. I really love your mentor's personality (Kreia), the locales are interesting enough and there'll be a few references to the first game. You won't find anyone as awesome as Jolee or Mission, though.

Also, Sneak Attack got nerfed (I think? You start off as a Jedi so I don't think you even get it anyways) and towards the end of the game you can become so powerful with the Force that you just walk into a room, cast Drain/Lightning two times and all eight enemies are dead. (Preeeeetty sure this was normal mode)

Also, KotOR II has plot holes. Quite a few of them. Not always major, but it is enough to bother me. The end always make me go huh.gif and it just gives me the feeling the game was rushed.

But despite all that, it is still a good game. Improved graphics, improved combat, the influence thing is neat as well as references to the first game. In my opinion, the story is its main, if not only, drawback.

You are exactly right on that, actually. LucasArts rushed Obsidian to get the game out by the holiday, and because of that, Obsidian had to stop development on a lot of things. Fortunately for us, they left a HUGE amount of the textures, scripts, and other things in the game code, so now there is something called Project Gizka working to restore all of this extra stuff into the game.

I like the feel of KotOR II over KotOR I. It's darker, creepier, and edgier. I wish the story hadn't been cut so abruptly short, but I still enjoyed it. If you liked the first game, you should like the second game, especially if you like dark sequels. People may criticize it because it's newer graphics are just marginally better than the old (or worse in same cases, ack Jedi robes), but let's face it, we play a MUD, story is more important to us than shiny tongue.gif. I say go for it!

I don't even feel the need to decide which KOTOR was better because both are obligatory in my book. wink.gif

I don't know about any Project Gizka, but there is an unofficial patch 1.04 for The Sith Lords - it fixes a lot of bugs and afaik does some texture replacing and stuff like that - nothing major I suppose. But bug fixing - that's why you need it). Also, there can be issues with area loading with this patch (at least on nvidia - you just need to install a bit older drivers and it's fine, tested myself).

Also, there might be no Mission, but there is Visas. smile.gif Mira and Handmaiden weren't bad either. But yeah, Mission was cute.

Getting into another online game would be virtual suicide (weak pun intended). I bought myself a copy of KotOR 2, and intend to start it once I reach Level 80. Thank you all for ze input, which I very much appreciate.

For a whopping 7 attacks per round, 14 if you dual wield, I think you won.

I've never played the second, but my favorite was the roguish type, with traps. I would dismantle them and kill almost anything with my stockpile of mines or whatever.

It's been a while, but I still love that game.

Now I am at the point where you choose your class. In the first game I chose Consular, because while my tactics (deception and slight of hand) were more suited to the Sentinel's skills, I preferred to do it through diplomacy and persuasion. The game recommends the Consular class only for "advanced players" in this sequel however. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I think they recommend that to 'advanced players' because you will rely on force powers a lot, and someone who plays the game for the first time may not know how the powers work...

However, IIRC, they are pretty much similar to KotOR I so if you know that game well, you shouldn't have trouble.

Haha. I did get my behind kicked as a Consular for a while. Mainly because at the time I didn't know how D&D worked, and bought the game without an instruction book, and went about undermining amazing skills and ignoring that my odd-numbered attributes weren't helping me.

KotOR = better plot, more well-rounded characters, more satisfying conclusion
KotOR2 = better mechanics, more moments of WTFawesome, dark side characters get a crazy bloodlusting wookie.

EDIT: Also I modelled my favourite character in Lusternia after Darth Nihilus, so, you know, close to my heart.

In K1 I had unresistable force choke/hold. Yes, even the last boss couldn't throw a saving roll against it, which is one of the "features" of bioware games, I guess. The fact that if you build a certain way you become an unstoppable juggernaut of own. Monks with perfect body killing unkillable npc dragons, that kind of thing. I also had maxed sneak attack so that when I held someone I had instant vulns and could basically instantly kill anything. It breaks the story if you kill the last boss at the wrong times. sad.gif
