Kongregate and the future

Back to Common Grounds.

This is primarily a question for the administration, though I do want to hear opinions from others as well.

Has the Kongregate 'experiment' been considered a success or failure, and will we be expanding to other game sites in the future?
Estarra2009-04-07 18:45:19
Though this is completely an IRE decision, I think it's been a modest success and would think they'd expand to other sites.
Snaithy2009-04-07 18:47:29
success!

seriously, the sudden arrival of so many newbies was a joy to watch (sometimes), which can only be a good thing for us (sometimes)
Krackenor2009-04-07 19:18:18
That's good to hear. One more question, then. Did it succeed as well, better, or worse than expected?

I'm no mod, but I'd say that expanding to Kongregate was a GREAT idea. Sure, there are trolls posting comments about "Whre r da graphix???" and "Text gmes SUCK", but overall it's been a hit with old-school gamers like me.

Heck, I'm one of those "Kongregate newbies," and I'm loving Lusternia and the other Realms!

Another good thing about the Kongregate version: the game client. A lot of people don't know (or don't have) an IRC program or MUCK/MUD/MUSH/MOO client, so I think the Kongregate client made it a lot more accessible.

Good job guys! smile.gif

I think the client could use some work, particularly the mapper. I'd use the flash client exclusively (I'm back on java right now) if you could pop the map out into another window.
Everiine2009-04-08 19:50:12
If I wasn't using MUSHclient, I'd be using the Nexus version on the Lusternia website, not the Kongregate version. The Nexus one is better, IMO.

For me the issue is the fact tha you have to reload your settings everytime you play. That's annoying.

Well, I must admit, I am a Kongregate newbie as well, and I think it's an awesome decision to move there. I'm a major RPG and MMO gamer who had never played a MUD before- I heard stories about them when I read about the geeks of the days when a tricked out computer was measured in kilabytes, or such. I always assumed they were extremely basic, and therefor un-fun when I have a game such as EVE to play. Stumbling upon what I thought was a random flash game, I quickly had that idea shoved down my throat to end somewhere indeterminable in my small intestine. I am quite serious when I say there is a LARGE audience that is looking exactly for this type of game to play, and haven't found it because our generation is often to young to realize how great this can be- To me, a MUD was never more then a game my Dad played back when he wasn't hunting Triceratops for meat (Yes, feel the paleontologists roll over in their grave as one! Humans and dinosaurs in the same joke!).

Essentially, what I mean to say is, there are a ton of honest to god gamers that often troll flash sites out of boredom. And this is exactly the kind of thing that will bring a HUGE audience in- Prove that a MUD can rock your world. I know I personally called several of my friends, and some of them are now living happy Lusterian lives. content.gif Just a matter of reaching the right audience and such.

However... And I will have to say this lest I learn to regret my advice. I'm sure you guys have all considered it, but it bears mentioning.... Do be careful what site you post this on. I know certain sites have users that may join just to make some incessant spam accounts to ruin everyone's day. And when they all travel in packs to do it all at once.... Could get messy. Although the Tutorial does a wonderful job of discouraging that! suspicious.gif Either way, keep up the good work. You've certainly rocked my worldview, and I'm sure I'm not the last!

And while we are on the topic... I found it quite funny that some certain Gods (And I won't name names....) created accounts on the site and have Gorked up the leader boards a bit.... And wonder of wonders, they're Lusternian. I also find it intriguing that a God even has a level in the sense of the game... And it appears to be 129. Funny either way biggrin.gif

Unfortunately it's not really possible to move the map window beyond the bounds of the embedded Flash app itself. However if you run the client maximised you should be able to place the map window where it won't obscure the game text. There is a button to maximise the client on the main game selection screen (this is not present in the Kongregate version).

Settings should be stored remotely on IRE's servers similar to the way Nexus works I believe. If that's not working for you PM me some more details and I'll take a look.

Really? Everytime I load the thing I have to point to a file on my computer, or I have no settings...

Did this change recently?
tarik2009-05-06 01:49:25
I just checked on Kongregate and settings were being saved and loaded automatically for me.

Very strange... using Safari on OSx with flash player 10 developers version, it doesn't seem to save them.

I'll test again when I get home on vista. Maybe there was an update since I last tried some 2 months ago.
Daganev2009-05-06 06:00:57
Ah, there was indeed an update to the player. Very nice. :approve:
