Actually he makes a point in that the tone of your arguments has less and less to do with fearaura than it has to do with wolf totem. No one is disputing the awesomeness of wolf, and a lot of people even agree that it could be toned down.
The problem is that, as Derian said, there's a lot of 'the grass is greener' envy around, so he's just pointing out a facet of combat where cities have the advantage, and I agree.

There was really no way for me to get around explaining the reason why fearaura needed to be reworked without mentioning wolf. I don't mind wolf at all, except for reasons that have been churned out repeatedly. And I did suggest some ideas for nerfing fearaura. The OP didn't mention a single thing about nerfing wolf. You guys are just mega defensive.

There have been some valid complaints about fearaura and I figured the time will eventually come when envoys decide on a change. But if not, I have some ideas!
* Change fearaura to work like rad.
* Have fearaura cancel out the fearaura of a rival Ascendant.
* Change fearaura to cause (insert affliction here) on a 10 second timer. Someone suggested shyness to me.
My reason is that fearaura is incredibly effective in groups, almost too effective and it gives commune ascendants a distinct advantage against city ascendants. (is this scenario familiar, anyone?) Wolf totem grants 100% resistance to fear- compare to rubeus which two guilds in Celest or Magnagora have access to and only gives 33% (?) resistance. Harmony monks also have a fear resisting ability 'lumuti', which Seren monks have access to.
So I think to balance things a little, fearaura needs a looksee.

We can leave out any mention of wolf from here on so as not to make anyone cry and put forth suggestions at will. Maybe Derian will actually read the thread and note where people have made some suggestions, including myself.

Right, then solutions to fearaura was brought up, then you guys cried wolf.
Edit: But okay, I just wanted to let that pun out for the longest time.

That's because the best change would be one that doesn't involve fear resistance at all. Why not forced movement without fear!
Isuka2009-04-22 23:22:57
I'd like to take this back to the simple "fearaura is overpowered" argument.
One person being able to send most of the opposing force fleeing on a passive tick is overwhelming in group combat. I wouldn't be opposed to them being able to give a regular fear affliction (so it's still possible to compose and keep most of the group together), though.

That would make it even better than it is now, but hey...

For some reason, it's overpowered-- so the answer is to upgrade it.
Casilu2009-04-22 23:42:09
Why not have fearaura work on a tic like it does now, but make it give off an illusion of a starting message of a delayed insta? That way, their system thinks they are in a run or die situation until they realize Shuyin won't have judge. The fear of death is a powerful thing!

This is the same problem I have with an affliction like passive shyness.
What about something in between? For example, give a message and give a brief time to compose, then if you do not compose in that time period then the fear ticks.
Or it may be okay to scrap it completely for a passive affliction, but giving a fear affliction in place of causing fear seems kind of counter-productive. Also, there are already a lot of passive afflictions going around. Can you imagine fighting Serenwilde in a HS demesne with Ascendants giving extra passive afflictions?

The first was the idea I pitched.

Shuyin does your idea make it so it's worthwhile for Mag/Celestian ascendants to use fearaura against communes? I think that your idea would nerf it, which is fine, I guess. If we went that route, I'd say just delete it altogether.

Not to get involved with the fearaura/wolf part, but learn about wisp before commenting. Wisp is restricted to forest terrain only. A summoned dryad can count as forest terrain just so us wiccans don't need to cart around pocket druids. It also costs 1 power to summon (except on ethereal), and disappears on a failed or successful wisping. The only way a wiccan is wisping in an Aqua meld is if a wiccan -runs into the group- first and summons a dryad. Then someone manages to get out alive. And any smart person knows dryads fall in 1-2 chops. Of course, some rather just run away from the dryad instead of just dropping it. >.>
It's always amusing when someone tells someone else to learn their skills when they clearly have no idea what they are talking about so prepared to be educated.
If an area is a natural forest, the only way to remove the trees is by Geomancy defoliation. If an Aquamancer floods, it doesn't remove the trees. Thus, it is still possible to wisp, vines, sap, etc. You may want to spend some time in the future learning your abilities before putting other people down. Learn about wisp before commenting!

Sounds like aquas need Aquacast Overwater.
Xenthos2009-04-23 00:16:50
If they want to delete it (and, while they're at it, revisit Ascendance in general)... sure, why not? The entire thing still needs attention, from raising to skills to, well. Everything.

Damn straight. You have no idea how upset I was to get wisped and then sapped in my own damn meld.

That seems like a complaint about the nature of the game. A crow user faeling ascendant gets less use from flight than I do, I get less use from destruction compared to a druid, and more. Hell, warriors get less use for succumb, amissio, etc compared to wiccans/guardians. You see what I mean.
All skills will probably never be equally useful to everyone.
Xenthos2009-04-23 00:30:02
I wish I got some benefit from flight.
ANY benefit from flight.

And yet nothing you mentioned has any bearing on group combat in the way fearaura does. I'm finding it hard to see the relevance between Ascendants, a special skill that targets groups (fearaura) and the list of abilities/classes you mentioned. Flight, Sojiro? You're usually pretty reasonable and fair- admirably so, but now you're reaching far and wide.
Well, it's pretty much pointless to continue on in this way. I've noted that the players who happen to utilize wolf-totem in game are very much in opposition of having fearaura changed so that they get to deal with it too. I'll just go through envoys and hope that the admin took a glance at this thread.

Sure. It'd be about time, if you're deleting fearaura by making the affliction never affect anyone ever, replace it with something!
Malarious2009-04-23 05:30:26
Nerfing Fearaura without nerfing wolf/harmony etc will only mean you will have a LESS powerful skill that the same people are entirely immune to.
Fix all immunity (not resist, immunity) to become resistance.
Make Fearaura cause fear not insta run.
Theres alot of skills that bias to others.
