Ubuntu 9.04 has been released. I upgraded my system last night and it's running perfectly. It looks better and seems to run faster.

Give it a shot at http://www.ubuntu.com/

Silly coder, Linux is for netbooks.

I actually use Windows on my netbook, ironically enough.

I have never had a computer run as fast as when it's running a well configured Gentoo box.

The only problem with Gentoo is that it's a pain to set up when you first start (if you do it through the console rather than the new live disk install) and portage can horribly and irreversibly break your system with even a minor problem.

That said: it's -still- worth the effort.

Meh I just like it for the nice vga 16bit loading terminal niceness that SUSE now has. That was a "cool new feature" back a while in Gentoo.

I got lazy, I use Ubuntu...I don't need Gentoo for anything...

I wub.gif Ubuntu. I'm running the 64-bit AMD server kernel with the desktop package on top of it. It's plenty fast enough for anything I do on it!
Simimi2009-04-24 22:11:52
How is using server with desktop services enabled? I have heard it is a bit faster and slightly lighter in resouces. I know you can remove the server daemons and such... I assume the server kernel/core build is much smaller too.

Working that well hm?
Charune2009-04-24 22:29:30
Fairly sure the server kernel uses a different scheduler than the desktop variant.

REALLY LORD CHARUNE!?!? This interests me...

Did they ever make it less of a pain to get rid of gnome and replace it with KDE?
Unknown2009-04-25 02:04:31
I prefer Gnome now, so I can't really say, since I haven't tried to swap for KDE on Ubuntu.

I dislike the general lack of options in gnome.

Although, I do like the themes.

Edit: Plus, KATE runs much smoother on KDE than in Gnome, and I love KATE.

I am a geek, but I'll take nerd, if I must.

(And, you're welcome!)

Yes, you do awesome things in the form of making free systems like Treant, and I'm thankful. But that doesn't change the fact that you're a nerd. geek.gif

(For what it's worth, I guess you could consider me a nerd too. I'm just less nerdy. nyah.gif)
