OMOTES
Versus...
Of course, the idea of an 'omote' is to broaden the range of expression devices open to players and help their interactions seem more seamless and less redundant - not make emoting every two seconds acceptable. The reason I bring this suggestion to the table is partially because, frankly I don't find many of the custom emotes very useful or accurate for my character. Formal gestures (incline, bow, simplenod) are great, but beyond these they tend to yield highly specialized reactions and are far between. I find normal custom emotes so redundant after a while that it it makes me dizzy. If I could, I would gradually ween myself off of them altogether and devise my own set of custom omotes.
The abuse of omotes as illusions could potentially be a problem only if a certain measure of caution were not put in place.. Even if it was firmly pointed out that such was not allowed, it would still be abused. Configuring your emote ansi colour solves the reader's part of the problem, but your system will probably still pick up false combat triggers. For this reason I recommend that all emotes (for conformity- if that isn't important, just omotes) appear by format with a single indentation/symbol at the beginning of the line. Unless I am mistaken, this would allow clients to distinguish between the two.
Omotes must contain the ^me variable (your character's name) or you will get a corrective message telling you so.
ADD: Custom Poses
Like anything else, these could be abused... but, idea:
- Make custom poses unavailable until Level 20? (like shouts) and after X hours of gameplay.
- Also automatically disable the ability for anyone below X amount of rolepoints.
Needless to say, an inappropriate pose (as would be denoted in HELP POSES) would result in a dock of rolepoints.
ADD: Default Trade/Busy-ness Poses

With custom poses one might see this when they enter a room:
Pacing around with an anxious expression, RandomJoe is watching the door. Seated on the floor, RandomJane is fiddling idly with a small dagger. Leaning against the wall, RandomBob has his nose buried in a scroll.
Instead of:
RandomJoe is here. RandomJane is here. RandomBob is here.

It would also be useful to denote that you are busy. When cooking, or forging, or just something in general and don't want to be disturbed, this would be a great way to legitly tell someone to bugger off without having them ask where that came from. They see the scowl/focus/busy-ness, and still pester you, scowl and tell them to go away.

I'm no system expert, but I believe clients can pick up color too as a trigger condition. But yea, nice idea!

You're right, but that would require an update for most systems in existence. I imagine most people would want to avoid that, however simple it were.

I want this! I also want custom poses! OMOTES and Custom poses! So we look pretty when we do things!

Mm. Custom poses. I would love those.
At the moment I can do 'OMOTE' on Iola by virtue of being an illusionist. But it would be great to be able to do it. A lot of the fun I get out of Lusternia is from the creative writing POV and it would be great to have more freedom with sentence construction.

I want to pose myself wreathed in divine fire.
Iola2009-04-27 18:52:25
I'm sure it would be too difficult to make things like posing being wreathed in divine fire to be impossible
Noola2009-04-27 18:55:16
Well, they could be limited to a certain number of characters to make it more difficult.
And of course, there will still be dorks who try to pose stupid stuff. Well, they can be subject to peer smackdown (anything from getting yelled at, to getting disfavoured, to getting killed outright) for inappropriate poses. For really bad ones, the Admin can step in. But, honestly, there's a way to abuse everything. Even stock emotes can be abused through spam.

Oh, something else worth adding- omotes should require the ^me variable- the text must contain your name!
On the poses... it might be wise to keep the 'Soandso is here, posing this' format. Then again, prefix titles don't make it any less confusing...

Oh god, I have been inwardly complaining about the redundancy of the emotes we have since I started playing. I'm so glad I'm not the only one.
