Ethereal Entrances

This was brought up in another thread which I'm following up here. There's some, perhaps legitimate, concern over the entry points of the ethereal Glomdoring and Serenwilde. To briefly recap the history of the exits:
  • There originally were normal entrances into Glomdoring and Serenwilde from Faethorn.
  • Players campaigned and we eventually acquiesced to removing the exits and placing special archways which exited where the original entry points were.
  • When guards and totems were removed from Ethereal Glomdoring and Serenwilde, there were many complaints about how easy it would be to raid, so again we acquiesced to player demand and moved the exits to the nexus points.

Honestly, it's been awhile since I've thought about the ethereal exits and I don't recall all the pros and cons for each decision except insofar that I was annoyed that players were fickle in their arguments and kept giving us mixed signals. but a long time has passed, so I'm thinking of moving the archways back to their original points or even removing the archways altogether and setting the original exits back. I'd like to hear pros and cons to these ideas. I will be heavily moderating this thread so please keep it civil.

I say we need cubix exits to the Ethereal realms. The only thing I can see that would be bad about this is the Ladies not repopping like demon/angels.

I'd rather address the issue (if there is an issue) without requiring the need to use an artifact.

I think either the archways should not have guards at them or that there should be an alternate way to access them beyond an aetherport similar to the rifts in nil and celesta.
Vathael2009-05-03 20:48:30
Regardless of Artifact or moving the archways, I think the main issue would be the Ladies not auto-popping.
Gregori2009-05-03 20:49:08
I am all for remove the archways completely.

We could put some planar gates/permanent rifts connecting ethereal serenwilde/glomdoring with elemental planes or other points on prime. I never really thought of that and am not quite sure of what the logic would be but it's definitely a possibility.

Could you explain that more? I'm not sure I understand.
Harkux2009-05-03 20:49:49
Remove Archways.
Fern2009-05-03 20:51:26
Yes, please remove the archways!
Sarrasri2009-05-03 20:52:24
In regards to Ladies/Daughters, if the area is made easier to enter, it'll need to be easier to keep our mobs alive. Angels and demons repop, so you don't worry about them as much as the Supernals/DLs, but Ladies/Daughters require tedious questing just to get them. So our plane defenders don't just reappear later, we have to work for them.
Vathael2009-05-03 20:53:28
What Sarrasri said.

EDIT: I think an issue with them spawning back like Demons/Angels would be how powerful they are at different phases of the moon. At the Full Moon phase I think is their most powerful state, not quite sure on the numbers on how much damage they do and such but this might need adjusted if auto re-spawn comes into effect for balancing.
Llandros2009-05-03 20:53:46
now that i think about it, removing the archways sounds like a pretty reasonable compromise
kiriwe2009-05-03 20:54:10
Well, the ladies are already harder to kill, so it makes sense that they don't auto-pop.

removing the archways sounds like a good idea to even the playing field
Estarra2009-05-03 20:55:16
For those saying remove the archways, are you advocating MOVING them away from the nexus (where they originally were) or going all the way back to having them as normal exits into ethereal Faethorn. Remember, there were huge complaints that motivated us to put them in the first place. (Think it over! One thing I hate is doing something that players allegedly want and then having them tell me later that they want it changed back. Whatever we do now, it will be some time before I would consider going back on it.)
Harkux2009-05-03 20:56:53
I'm all for giving the ethereal Seren/Glom normal exits from Faethorn.

I would prefer them gone completely. I have never liked them. They are a death trap for people exiting into faethorn and into enemies camping the archway, and they are a deathtrap for enemies entering into the ethereal forests.
Vathael2009-05-03 21:00:31
You can look through the archways to see who is on the other side, if you walk into a pile of enemies it really is your own fault.

You aren't seeing much of anybody if they are in the trees. Which has happened enough times. I should know. It's how I gank Gloms at their archway.
