Some time ago I switched necromancy to tracking, and for a brief time enjoyed the benefits of prints, the dog, and pits. I enjoyed it for the most part, but once I realized the stats I'd given up by forgetting necromancy as a viscanti I quickly went back to it.
Now that I'm human, the stat difference won't be so huge, and I'm wondering if it might be worth switching back to tracking.
What I'm looking for is a list of pros and cons between the two, to help me make my decision. I'll also include a poll for quick reference.
What I've got so far:
I know ectoplasm should be in there as well... but frankly I rarely use it, and when I do use it I always see it instantly scrubbed off.
What's the general opinion?

What I've got so far:
CODE
Pros:
Dog helps hindering a bit.
Prints is fun.
Pathfinding seemed useful, once you figured out where they were and where they went.
Traps could add a useful element to my hindering.
Cons:
Rituals is full of useful abilities like acquisitio, draconis and so forth.
Archlich is very handy to have at my disposal.
Deathmark/weapon, which I haven't learned to use fully yet, seems like it could be nice.
Crucify, which I'm told is good but have never really learned to use properly.
I'd lose putrefaction, which is awesome for bashing.
Biggest one in my mind: the MASSIVE cost of moving from necromancy to tracking, lesson wise. Seriously, you lose like 50% of your invested lessons, right?

Necromancy is more versatile and flexible, but it's not necessarily more powerful in terms of offense.
Furien2009-05-10 08:56:28
You'll lose 40%, it's harsh.
Honestly, Necromancy is 'where it's at'. Pits in particular making tracking neat, the dog is a nice companion, but it's just not for some people. You'll be sacrificing a lot by leaving Necromancy behind. Archlich stat boosts are nice, it has nice group skills (contagion, coldaura, crucify). Seriously, if you're ganking someone and they might escape, just pop crucify on them. That's usually all there is to it.
Pits will add a new element to group combat (instagibbing anyone that falls in, namely, if you've enough people) but not as much by comparison. As Narsrim said, it's got good offensive tools, it just gives up a lot.

Tracking really is better offensively for an Ur'Guard. The only offensive parts of Necromancy that you can really make use of are ectoplasm and contagion (well, and coldaura). However, as you pointed out, Necromancy and Rituals have a great deal of utility. You'll have to decide whether utility or offense is more valuable to you.

Since you are a Pureblade you can just be like Ethelon and only have a pit and decap alias for an offense and suck otherwise or hide and run away when someone figures out to avoid pits.
Everiine2009-05-10 16:02:04
I say go Tracking, because whether or not it is stronger/weaker than Necromancy, it's still one helluva fun skillset.

I'm actually a bonecrusher now.
Vathael2009-05-10 17:04:27
I'd think necromancy is best for bonecrusher for all the balance loss perks.

Necro is better offensively, and the utility rests both really. The only utility I miss from rituals/necro is puella/puer.
Isuka, as a BC necro is certainly better offensively. What are your priorities though? The utility and neatness of tracking is incredibly useful for other endeavors such as local area item scanning, questing, hound movement and listening, etc. Have you used swiftswim? I think that's one of the neatest skills out there.
The lesson loss is horrific.. so maybe save those creds and buy an artifact or something
Desitrus2009-05-12 16:34:01
Trackromancy? Necrack?

Awww, I wub you too!
I'm also looking forward to you learning how to avoid pits one day... you seem to make it almost to easy for me
Vathael2009-05-13 02:32:16
Heh, you wouldn't come off the Megalith on Nil whenever I could burrow while in a pit or fly around them when it was just me and you. Or the time in catacombs when I was using trees to avoid pits and you'd just go hide behind some more pits as far away from me as you can. I'd be down for a one room duel with you any day if you'd like.

It is well known how crappy PB is against other knights, which is why I whore such a cheesy combo... just as you ALWAYS whore knockdown/mantakaya. No one in this game that fights is innocent of not using cheese, so stop your bitching just because I use something that has killed you so many times now.
