No one speaks lucidian, so I only use it when speaking those phrases you have to use to get into certain locations, like the guildhall, etc. Being a bookbinder, I do have conversations with dracnari in that racial language, but it is a rare thing.

Iytha speaks lucidian sometimes. She also has her journal written in it so people can't read it.

I should do that for Trill stuff in the Matrix clan.

Oh wait.

Wow, that just reminded me that I haven't used any languages in MONTHS, so much for being a bookbinder, huh?

I would, if I had racial languages people used sad.gif. I have:

Dracnari
Elfen
Tae'dae
Merian
Aslaran

I'd much rather have:

Elfen
Lucidian
Loboshigaru
Dracnari
Dwarfen

Also: You're completely within your right to use the mechanic! It's not a bad thing to do at all. Other characters are, however, equally within their right to think it is rude / whatever and their reactions are justified. Just like the stereotypical French* reaction to an American who visits and can barely speak their language, having to fall back on English. Your character is making a conscious choice to speak in a different language (despite being fluent in Common), and the people around you react to your choice.

* My experience there is actually that most of them are pretty understanding and like tourist money as long as you're willing to try. Silly stereotypes.

I know people from France who've had the same experience here (In Canada, imagine that!), people believed the two speaking French were being extremely rude to speak in their native language to each other (not even to Canadians) and they were asked to please speak in English.

Edit: Actually, I just noticed the date on that. Weird, it put it at last read, guess it's been awhile. laugh.gif

I've gooot...
Merian
Furikinni
Aslari
Lucidian
Taurian
Elfen, two of those (taurian and furikinni) were a sad attempt to try and connect better with loved ones who both left me, like, a month after I wasted my language slot T.T
Iktomi2009-10-19 05:49:06
So far Iktomi knows Elfen, Lucidian, Tae'dae, and Loboshigaru. He speaks elfen quite often, as most people in Glomdoring speak it (at least most I've interacted with). The other three languages are completely for RP reasons. Iktomi's a little off and does things differently.. when he's writing something philosophically related, it'll be in Lucidian. When it's religious it's Loboshigaru, due to the "loyalty" aspect of the race (Have to be fierce and loyal with your religion!) and when it's just a general story or tale it's Tae'dae just because it seems like a good language to tell stories in!

I still say we do what I suggested we do.

Changeling Cameo lets you switch.
Everiine2009-11-13 01:53:50
But I don't want a cameo because of the extra stuff that comes with it... I just want an artifact to let me change languages.

I originally took up bookbinding with my Trill for the sole purpose of learning Lucidian.

I should use Lucidian more when speaking with Lucidians.
Sylphas2010-02-16 16:16:47
I just aliased "chitter " over the say command because I can't be bothered to change languages, I always forget to change back. Maybe I should make a one-off speak furrikini alias that switches and immediately switches back.

I did exactly the same thing.

On the other hand, why doesn't Trill have a racial language? crying.gif
Riluna2010-02-16 16:26:20
I know many of the other languages get used a lot. I'll use Elfen, when everybody present can understand it. I basically use it because random passersby are less likely to waste a bunch of time and attention, asking what we're talking about, and then it has to be explained to them (well, maybe not -has- to but it would be kind of rude not to). I've found that by doing conversations like that in another language, the random jump-in rate is drastically reduced.

Earlier in this thread, somebody mentioned how they didn't think languages other than Lobo were being used, because they didn't see it. But that's the reason they don't see it. Most of us use our racial language in private situations, where everybody present understands, and common elsewhere. It seems to be only Lobos who do it -everywhere-.
Arte2010-02-16 16:42:40
Trill really ought to know Lucidian by default.
Seraku2010-02-17 06:33:02
I actually speak Dracnari a lot. Though before Gaudiguch I could only really speak it with Zasha, Wigberht and a couple other of the 3 Dracnari in the basin. Nowadays I use it for when Seraku gets aggrivated or when im too lazy to use signing. Either way, Dracnari is a really cool language.
Ayden2010-02-17 06:41:20
There should be like a set city language and everybody in the city should be able to learn it for a cost or something. Like Hallifax would have Lucidian, Gaudiguch Dracnari, Glomdoring and Serenwilde Elfen, Celest Merian, and Mag...not sure about that one. Implimenting something like this would allow players to unite over a common language and encourage more unity within. Or so the theory goes. I for one would love to learn Lucidian or even rezz a trill language.
Kante2010-02-17 06:44:26
I think that Commune and City languages is a great idea (I loved it in Achaea), but I don't think they should be already-established racial languages. I think they should be their own thing.

As for their coming about...some scholars from across the mountain ranges go to each of the cities and tell everyone tales of times past in these areas, and their ancient languages. Something like that would be win, I think.
Ayden2010-02-17 07:21:28
A city language made no sense in Achaea. It was just there...I think i'd prefer a current racial language to represent a city simply because cities have specialized races unlike Achaea.
