I'm not sure what you mean by that. Bush was the first US president to push hard for the "two state solution" (or so I'm told.. I could have sworn that Clinton pushed for it also, but it seems he always worded it in a way of "if" not "when")
Don't you remember Bush's last minute effort?

It still bothers me that people find this speech "important". Mainly because it sounded like a re-iteration of U.S. policy from the past 4 years at-least (maybe last 10 years?) And I didn't hear anything new or different in the substance from what has been happening the past few years. Too often Obama says things that sound very new, but in practical realities, it is the status quo. (And people lick it up as if it's something special)

You can't compare Bush's last ditch effort to what Obama did. Maybe it is a repetition of our policies in some, but what was different is that he went there and said it to them. He made them cheer, he made them gasp - and they respected him for bringing up major issues like Palestine and women's rights. Not to mention the torture issue. Just that is a major change in policy from Bush/Cheney.
I think mainly he's trying to rebuild the status quo. Problem is, this is only a temporary fix. They might feel all warm and fuzzy now, but if Obama doesn't follow up and make these things happen we'll be worse off in the end.

I agree. While superficial similarities may exist, this does not imply the tone, would-be policies, etc. are the same.
Daganev2009-06-05 15:15:46
The "tone" of the policies are the superficial ones!
I think people seem to forget that the Arab world has had a beef with "US Policies" since the end of WWII. (And I've read some books which shows it actually goes back to the 1930s with Hitler spreading propaganda about the British and those who won WWI)
Make what happen exactly? Are you expecting Obama to also enact new laws in other countries?

I enjoyed his speech.

Of course not! He said he'd close Guantanamo bay by the end of the year. He said by 2012 he'd be out of Iraq completely. He said that America's interests will not be in oil, but in technology and scholarships to and from the Muslim world and America. He wants to connect the Muslim world and the USA closer via Internet, so that a teacher from America can teach MUSLIM WOMEN (gasp) like they are in the classroom or vice versa. Not saying they don't have Internet, but probably not exactly the way we do. He backs Nuclear Power for Iran and other Middle Eastern countries. He wants to create green jobs all over the world for the environment.
Did you even watch the video?

Reality check is in bold:

Except Congress won't give him funding because he has yet to give details and plans on what to do with the people still there
He said by 2012 he'd be out of Iraq completely.
Except he also said that he would leave behind "advisors" (Like we have some all over the world)
He said that America's interests will not be in oil, but in technology and scholarships to and from the Muslim world and America.
Allready been in place for the past 10 years or so

Nothing is stopping this from happening right now. The Arab countries don't have the great firewall of china Not saying they don't have Internet, but probably not exactly the way we do.

That would be him running other people's countries, now wouldn't it?
Did you even watch the video?
Yes, didn't hear anything new, or any changes, except for allowing Iran to make nuclear weapons

WTF?
Are you saying that just because you thought Bush was the antichrist?
Xavius2009-06-06 02:05:01
Your reality check does not have much to do with reality. Funding for prisoners is available on a very large scale. Guantanamo is a drop in the bucket next to drug enforcement. Iran's internet filter makes China look libertarian. Bush did not make any direct investments in foreign education or technology. Fact check next time, plz.

The thing about that that makes me most skeptical is: how is he planning on America's interests suddenly not being oil?

Well, been watching tv lately and a suspicious commercial keeps popping up for GM that has them going for vehicles with better fuel efficiency and preferably ones that use different means than just oil.
We shall see.

By an extremely overoptimistic plan to decrease demand for oil to approximately what we already produce domestically.
