Pit Hopping!

After talking with the envoys, we are thinking of adding a new skill in environment that is a power move that gets you out of a pit no matter what. (Talk to your envoys for details.)

The question is what would this skill be? Pit jumping? Pit hopping? Super Mario Dirt Climber?

Let us know your ideas on what to name the skill!

EDIT: To clarify, I'm looking for some neat RP mechanism so we can name the skill and base the action off of, not ideas for what the skill does (since that's pretty much decided).

Obviously you should have to dig yourself out of the hole. Literally.

SuperDig? HoleFiller? DirtMeister?

Digdugging, actually.

Edit: If you're not falling in the first place, Quickstep.
If you're climbing out, wall leap, quick scales, scramble, escape?
Furien2009-06-09 03:07:36
Scramble, pitflip.

Edit: SHADOWDANCE FLIGHT
Unknown2009-06-09 03:10:18
(Flight doesn't get you out of pits.)

The only issue I see with the change is that an ability that allows a person to instantly escape from a pit will be used as an excuse for otherwise outright stupid situations regarding pits (ie. upgrades). Which will force people to learn further in Environment for this one ability, which will mean yet another ability people will require to be adept at group fights. I'm all for making Environment more useful, but can't we stick it in Combat or somesuch?

ENVIRONMENT - STEPCUTTER

Syntax: ASCEND PIT

Your knowledge of the earth is so keen that you can sense the most supportive spots and carve footholds that let you quickly and easily ascend out of a pit.

Really? You're carving foot holds? I don't think that takes enough time, why not build stairs?

Scramble.

You scramble quickly out of the pit.

I just like how it sounds.

Call it "piton" and have a wooden spike be required to be in the inventory.

Sure, they're usually metal, but these are dirt pits after all, and wooden spikes are already in game and easily craftable with low end arts skills.

I like this line of reasoning. I don't know anything about rock climbing or mountaineering, but are there other maneuvers that may make sense? Preferably something that only requires a shovel (since almost everyone carries one around).
Razenth2009-06-09 04:36:03
We already have tumbling. Make it like some kind of awesome parkour style thing where you run up the wall or something. Wall leap, wall run, wall climb, etc.
Aerotan2009-06-09 04:38:13
Shovelstep

You thrust your trusty shovel high into the earthen wall and use it as leverage to pull yourself out.

How deep are pits supposed to be, anyway?
Shaddus2009-06-09 04:38:46
Here's an idea. Maybe that skill in lowmagic (blue?) can be changed to the skill? Or maybe levitate can quicken your rise out of a pit, or maybe keep you out of it all together?
Daganev2009-06-09 04:39:30
Digup!

Well not so deep as to prevent warriors from tapping on their heads with a weapon. Picture warriors playing golf or croquet with someone's head poking out!
Daganev2009-06-09 04:48:49
There is a product on the internet called an "escape shovel"

Following up on rock climbing, this move seems to fit the bill:

QUOTE
Layback: a crack climbing technique, climber grasps the edge of the crack, leans back, and moves upwards by walking the feet up the opposing wall.

However, it's kind of a mundane maneuver and doesn't make sense to be able to do without legs (at least). We probably want this able to be done with broken legs. Hmm. Maybe we shouldn't overthink this and just call the skill "RockClimbing" as a precursor to mountaineering.

If we were going the magical route, then maybe there could be a magical skill in basic elementalism that mages could enchant (though commune members would have to rely on cities for it). I'm thinking an earth-based spell that creates a column of dirt underneath you (Pillar) that pushes you to the surface.

Hmmm...
