Forging Change

Back to Common Grounds.

Because you're reducing the quality of the weapon!
Tervic2009-06-16 19:14:43
Then uptempering should restore decay time. I was also hoping that REPAIR WEAPON <#> would actually have a function, too, since it -is- in the repair AB.

It's something like 5 temperings = 1 month I believe. It's pretty minor IMO.
Daganev2009-06-16 19:20:42
the "cost" for going down is months.
the "cost" for going up is steel.
Tervic2009-06-16 19:21:13
Still, I don't think it should exist at all. Tempering is refining the quality of a weapon, and if you want to make a major adjustment, you still have to pay out the rear in terms of steel/power, and having decay time drop off on top of that is kind of like rubbing acid in the wounds.
Ilyarin2009-06-16 19:22:12
I quite like it. But honestly I don't think it's going to cause that many problems is it?

Overall, I agree that this is an absolutely amazing change. It's just the small details that rankle me.

The alternative is that it costs 1 steel to temper down too, and I don't think you want that.

edit: ProTip:
Remove your weapon from the forge before its completely done, and you will have base stats and you won't need to temper down at all. (you will also have less months, and it will cost tons of steel to upgrade)

Why does that have to be the alternative? Why did downtempering need to be changed at all? The only two reasons anyone would downtemper are a.) to hit the Rule of 463 for artifacting or b.) to make room for an uptemper somewhere else. That means that the real cost for fine-tuning the stats is steel (or power) plus decay time.

It didn't change at all as far as I'm aware.

It says so in the news post: Tempering down now has a chance to reduce the decay time. Isn't that what you've been arguing this whole time?
Daganev2009-06-16 19:48:23
Guess I'm wrong. I thought that was always the case, but nobody really cared because the only reason you did it was to turn your weapon into an artifact anyways.
Nemerle2009-06-17 09:08:35
I've just finished tempering down damage and speed on a newish katana by 58 points or so and the life dropped from 312 to 302 months - so not a big deal in the scheme of things.

Well I assume that if you have a weapon with ~480 totalstat that's say... I don't know, 100/180/200 (totally unrealistic) and you wanted to migrate 80 points to speed, you'd have to downtemper 80 from damage and prc and then uptemper speed 80 times. It's probably an unrealistic scenario, but the reduced decay time doesn't make sense because you're still 'working' on the weapon and 'refining' it. But, if the reduction is as minor as Nemerle says, it's probably not that big a deal.
Chade2009-06-17 20:10:58
I now have some 98/102/280 longswords for bashing purposes - since it's probably 1.5ish% less efficient than my 115/85/280 rapiers, but still, it would be nice to be able to use other weapons for combat purposes and not just Rapiers.

Introducing minimum stats the same as rapiers across the board is the best way forwards.
Daved2009-06-17 20:21:14
Pretty sure it was Isuka(?) that told me he did some testing that showed that damage had no effect on bashing, it really is all the speed and your strength. Think he tested with the high damage 2-H sword (claymore?) and his katana, took the same amount of hits to drop the mob.
Daganev2009-06-17 20:22:30
umm why didn't anyone tell me my math was way off? heh

100 speed flail as a krokani I think was a 5 second balance time, but I was on nexus, so it might be more like 4.5 or something. Proabaly not worth the 2K damage, and 1,000 wounds it did against Sidd.
Razenth2009-06-17 22:13:21
2k??? Holy crap. I imagine you could use that against squishy midtier robe wearers... geeze, not even Shuyin hits that hard. Actually, I wonder how hard he'd hit with broads with those kind of stats...

I was under the impression that sidd wasn't very well protected. It was 2K out of 8K health.

The actual weapon stats were 180/200/100

Which became
205/225/125 with dwarven runes/nightkiss/krokani and a lifespan of 304 months.
Razenth2009-06-17 22:26:10
Still. BC tracker, put down a pit or two, maybe some leg snares on the other exits. Maybe puissance up, wait for someone to walk in, crush crush. You'd only need like, two combos to squish most non Demis.

That's 2k per hit, right? And not power attack?
