Dying to a priestess cost me 800k essence in one go.
I'm just curious: how is one supposed to keep up with this rate of essence loss? (This is a real question, not me being snarky. And "don't hunt in enemy territory", while true, is not particularly useful.

800K is 'moderate', actually, if you compare it to how high essence loss can cost on deaths. :<

Honour is gained by...
* Holding elected seats of power. This honour is gained naturally
over time.
* Winning a ranked arena spar against a member of another Great House
* Honour is only won if the losing family has equal or greater
honour to your own House's. There is no honour in defeating a
weaker House.
* Offering at the shrines of the family's patron.
* Village influencing on behalf of the city or commune with which the
Great House is aligned.
* A family member triumphing in the arena combat rankings.
* Accepting new members into the family.
* Welcoming disowned family members back into the House.
* The family being accepted into a city or commune.

Of these, only adding members applies to lesser houses.

Shame is brought upon the family by...

a family's honour below 0.)
* Losing a ranked arena duel against a member of another Great House
* Honour is only lost if the other House gains honour from the duel.
* A member divorcing or rejecting the family.
* Disowning a family member.
* The family leaving or being kicked out of a city or commune.
* A family member leaving or being kicked out of the city or commune
with which the family is aligned.
* Killing denizens that are loyal to the city or commune with which the
family is aligned, including its guilds, villages, and other aligned
territories (notably Nil, Celestia, Moonspirit, and Nightspirit).
* Killing any person who is not a city, guild, or order enemy of the
family member who killed them.

All of these except the penalties for being kicked out of a city/commune to which the family belongs (since we can't) apply to lesser houses.
Hmph.

There should totally be more options for ways to earn honor!
I mean, where's the honor gained for family members who've done honors quests? Folks are supposed to be famous for that honor line, you'd think it'd bring some honor to a family.
Where's the honor gained by having members of the family who've won prestige contests in their library or had their play win on the stage? That sorta thing should bring honor to a family too.

If it naturally decays, but the only way to build honour is adoption, that's just silly.

We've wanted to do a full review of the Family System, but we've been pressed to do other things instead - forging review, a review of endgame bonuses. There was another time we'd ran a poll, but I can't remember off-hand what won out.

People need to talk to their trade ministers if it's cheaper to shop at the place that does not and has NEVER had a trade minister then it is to shop at their own place, which has had, and continues to have villages.

Those polls are always vaguely annoying, because you do what wins. Then the next one, something else wins, and you do that, and things like the Family System are perpetually second place and never get done even though there's a lot of support for it. It's like having a political party that only ever wins 49% of the vote.

End-game was second in the last. Family was way back, I think.

The last poll was 1) Streamlining, 2) Endgame, with everything else being far behind. Something like that.

-20 family honour for divorcing an inactive (unranked) person...this is very silly when the only way to add honour to lesser houses is to adopt, and you can't adopt with an inactive spouse!
If it's any consolation, honour doesn't really mean anything until you're a Great House anyway.

It's means something when you're a great house?
Also, wasn't there a poll before the last one?

Sure there was. It was superceded by the next one; which means your statement is half-true, but not entirely because it did come in second once but was not "perpetually second". One second place and one... somewhere later in place, heh.
It's just on the list to do.

It probably doesn't mean anything either way. One family has such a lead over all others that no one has come close for what, 2 rl years? Three? Heh. A bit like the library situation in Hallifax and Gaudiguch, is the family system at this point. Still, there's the whole "dishonourable" tag that accompanies it. Newbies don't necessarily know that it just means we got pinged for having to cut ties with an inactive person when they look at the family.

Family was 2nd in the first poll, and 3rd (and not too far behind 2nd either) in the last poll. With streamlining out of the way, I rather suspect it would have taken first if we ran another poll - however it was felt we should address endgame now, so we can try and address a lot of concerns about demigods/ascendants.

What's wrong with merians? How are they broken?
I remember reading some thread or another from a few months wherein someone warned, "Pick whatever race you want, as long as it isn't merian."

Oh yes, racial rebalancing was on that poll too, wasn't it?
There you are, for the inquisitive mind.

Many (though not all!) systems seem like the family system at this point.
Old player turnover does not appear high enough to... ah, vacate certain limited positions of authority, power, and/or prestige, or simply "first-placedness" if you will, rapidly enough to accommodate the rate of influx of new players.
Due to the way the game works, a lot of this stuff ends up being first-come, first-serve. I can't speak from personal experience for another 3-4 RL years, of course, but that's my perception.
