Pfft. Don't be such a Negative Nancy, Sylphas! Think of the possibilities. Now I want to make a Sentinel alt who writes Hallifax news posts like:

"Attention Citizens,

Three days from now, someone's horse is going to drop dead of starvation at the Matrix. This is both disturbing and unhygienic. Feed your animals, people!"

Then, when three days go by and no horse drops dead, I'll say that obviously the owner of the horse paid attention to my warning! laugh.gif

There is someone who tried to RP as being from the future. Unfortunately, it didn't work out too well. People disbelieved and insulted him (apparently even denizens got in on it).

It would perhaps be neat to see the tension between having to obey the civilians, but at the same time having to make sure they don't destroy the world with crazy experiments. There's plenty of history to draw things from there.

That's a pretty cool idea. Especially if you add in some future prophecy you figured out from your aeonic glimpses into the future about how one day the aeromancers/institute/whoever will destroy Hallifax.

Not from the future...cause yeah, that'd be impossible to pull off. How could you not know everything already? But able to pop into it now and then for limited amounts of time - like long enough to see someone's horse starve to death at the Matrix or something completely unimportant and undisprovable like that. That'd totally be awesome.

Do you know everything about the present or even the past? Our individual lives are tiny snapshots of the whole, big picture. wink.gif

Good lord. Logged in to Glomdoring for 3 hours and only heard 1 thing said on CT and even though there are a decent number of people on.

How can anyone stand that?

I love it. I don't want my CT being a chatroom of immature ninny's talking about cookies and licking each other at the Nexus.

Yay for people seeing the potential the guild has! Now come join us so we actually have the numbers to instigate the junta! smile.gif

I meant everything major, obviously. Say some big event comes, how could you not know the outcome of it if you were from the future? Why wouldn't you just be able to skip right to the end? That sort of thing. Eventually, something would come along that would point out you're not from the future at all. Like that Star Trek:TNG episode where that future guy showed up to 'witness' a historical event, but Picard figured out he wasn't from the future at all cause he didn't know how it was gonna play out.

So, IMO, playing that you can visit the future and have seen a few things is totally doable. That you come from the future isn't really.

Sentinels are warriors though. Warrior guilds scare me. laugh.gif

Aloysha's character is allegedly from a few thousand years in the future, so he's way too far removed from present day to be expected to be able to say what will happen every day.

But yeah, he gets a lot of trouble for it. When high-ranking denizens, not to mention Elostian himself, are telling him he's crazy and can't possibly be from the future, his RP tends to hit a few snags. Still, he's a trooper and keeps holding on to what he started with. I just don't envy his situation in the least!
Shedrin2010-07-07 21:07:19
I want more nosy Sentinels. Being all secretive and cryptic and scary and being able to recite a bunch of inane statistics about me whenever they magically show up in my guildhall and detain me "for my own safety". Or something.

Well, for that matter, of course folks are going to question someone who says they're actually from the future. It almost wouldn't make sense if they didn't. Who wouldn't question that? I think it would be really awesome, since he's already started it, if he kept on no matter what. Literally, no matter what. Then, after a long, arduous term of clinging to his guns about it, some little event happened that validated it.

That would probably be the sweetest thing ever.

(where in I use 'sweet' as 'awesome' not as 'adorable')

Except mechanically, we can't do that. Much like everything else about the Sentinels.

I don't expect anyone to believe him, sure! But I think it would be cool if people played along a little- maybe tried doing experiments on him to determine if he was or not, even if their intentions were purely to obtain solid proof that he wasn't from the future. As it is now, everyone just kinda goes "NOPE impossible get out of here crazy man." without ever taking it further. It's a little disappointing! Come on people, you're supposed to be scientists, obtain some empirical evidence! laugh.gif

I've actually been trying to subtly hint that my researcher suffers from time skips, where he hops forward by an hour or two at a time every so often. More from his presence in the Institute than anything intentional, mind you.
Ileein2010-07-07 21:27:41
The Institute should work on constructing a Time Turner for the use of exceptionally diligent students.

I will get right on this.
Noola2010-07-07 21:31:39
How does Aging work? Can you deage yourself and then, a few days later reage yourself?

Cause it would be pretty sweet to do that now and then and be yourself from different time periods!

You could at least obsessively scry people and track their habits and relationships and put it all in ghelp dossiers. tongue.gif

Serenwilde is really good about greeting novices on CGT and CT and making them feel welcome, and then someone tells them to read CGT to get started and how to use CGT to ask questions.

Then with Moondancers, we show them how to get to the guildhall and learn from the tutor, make sure they know how to use the most important skills (like talisman and rift), have them read the guild's novice rules (it's a pretty short file), and give them a couple starter items to help them bash up gold for the other basics. We make sure they know about Newton and the collegium tasks, and give them a chance to ask any questions they might have at that point. Then we send them a list of some further reading (a couple required before graduation and the rest just suggestions), but we send it via message and let them read it at their leisure. If there's too much in the first few minutes, it will scare them off, but if there's nothing at all, it will bore them off.

So we try to make them feel very welcome to encourage them to stay, show them how to get started and make sure they know where to go if they have questions (while most of them are probably alts, some of them are definitely real newbies). And then when they do have questions, always make sure those questions get answered fully. I believe in teaching someone how to fish for themselves rather than giving them a fish directly every time. When I tried Lusternia before this, I'd ask a question like "what's up with these pixies?" and someone either wouldn't know (seriously) or would just say "part of a quest" and ignore further inquiries. It's like, "uh okay? How about telling me how to get started on that quest?" I mean it was a collegium task, but I didn't even know there were collegium tasks until I made Aubrey. It's amazing I stuck around after that kind of "help"! We're also trying to mention mentorship more, since mentors are a good way to continue that learning and bonding with the guild, beyond the initial orientation. I think we have a nice balance, though it's important to keep the orientation streamlined and the momentum flowing.
Ileein2010-07-07 21:38:40
No, no, that's good. Go with it.

BTW, can I talk to you about commissioning the Sentinels to assist with re-education of unruly Researchers? Pretty please?
