It's pretty much the same, actually. But this oft-quoted example is not really very illustrative of the point it intends to illustrate. Road vehicles are about the same size since Roman times because their purpose is about the same because people are about the same size. Compare the history of boats where that doesn't apply.

I'd be really interested to see if someone can compile a list of the various "forum generations"
Like, who was active in the forums, the dates, and how many new people joined into that active state. I think I would consider someone "active" if they posted 200 or more comments.
edit: I changed my criteria to 50 posts or more, because I recognized too many old people from below the 200 mark. The number I got was 495 people, since the beginning of the forums. Would definitely be interesting to do a timeline for that.

actually the sizes of people did change.. but the cars are the same size, because the roads are the same size. Especially in the old cities.

So this is a bit off topic but I've been trying to think about what Lusternia's Identity is. Not just if Lusternia is Light vs Dark or Cities vs Communes or Jets vs Sharks. I was more looking at what makes Lusternia different from every other MMO out there. I really couldn't find it. Yeah, we have RP and politics and laws but in the end those are not really important. They are fancy icing but they don't really effect the end game. Lusternia is still just about kicking as much ass as you can. We never say that a org is doing good because it has lots of RPers or a strong ruling council. A org isn't considered doing good if it has lots of good merchants or characters who are pacifists but are very intelligent and excellent scholars. A org is doing good when it can kick the ass of the rest of the basin.
So maybe that's part of the problem. Who cares if a big bad fighter goes from Celest to Magnagora or Magnagora to Celest. Who cares how many of your side he's killed before or how much of a pain he has been for your side. He's on your side now and hell, he will help you win. Maybe that is why you see things like Kephera and Illithoid getting married. Why does racial RP matter? Why does org RP matter? It doesn't help you kick ass so in the end it is just pretty icing.
I think my point is that because our roles and who our organizations are doesn't matter in the end, they slowly fade away. It can be a lot of work to keep a strong idea of who a character is and what a organization is so it fades away because it's just extra. Lusternia's identity fades away because it is all just a thin reason to go attack the other side.

Org RP can be so hard to maintain because it can't be achieved. Magnagora wants everything tainted. Serenwilde wants the cities destroyed and Nature restored in full. Glomdoring wants the cities destroyed and Nature to embrace the Wyrd. Celest wants its empire back. NONE of this can actually happen in the game.
Guild RP, on the other hand, is infinitely more doable. And even if you are a total combatant who cares nothing for anything else, you can still have fun with your guild RP.
Really, the only part I don't like is the people who go to an org simply because it is now stronger, and they must always be on the winning side. But that's a huge, huge collection of various problems that can't even begin to be discussed here.

I'm going to have to agree here. This is probably why despite the fact that I have an interest in Hallifax and really do hope that some day it comes back (was lucidian once), the fact that I know that the probability of it coming is close to zilch makes it difficult for me to rationally commit to the RP required by the old clans (Eliz Tirita, I believe it was called).

Exceedingly random, however: Standard gauge, Casilu, you have correct - cars date to trains date to carriages date to roman chariots. It wasn't because of the ruts roman chariots made (that was why carriages i america were a standard length, though), but chariots were the same length because the roads had raised portions in the middle of the road so that people could literally use them as jumping/stepping stones to cross the road.
Stepping in the road generally led to a sandal full of raw sewage. Thus why roman chariots were a uniform length, which happens. The rest you've got pretty much spot on, though! That's not a very commonly known fact, beyond history geeks.

I suppose that makes sense, doesn't it? I've never been to Italy, or for that matter Turkey or Greece. I have always wanted to, however! I fear the extent of my travels will be limited to mid-northern europe for some time yet. Alas!
