So I bought the Limited Edition BlazBlue at Gamestop the other day. I had not heard much about this game until a few weeks ago, but since then I had been reading up on it/watching videos. As the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear, I had to have it.

So far it's been great. I love the characters, but I haven't decided on one I want to be my main yet. Jin is pretty easy to learn, and I've also enjoyed playing Iron Tager. I thought Carl looked interesting, but his voice alone almost drives me insane.

I haven't ventured online yet since I'm still learning the game. It feels a little easier than Guilty Gear, there aren't like 3 different kinds of cancels to learn. It also feels a little less technical than Street Fighter, which I like. One thing that has slightly disappointed me, and I may be wrong about this, but so far it looks like the crazy aerial combos and fights that were a staple in Guilty Gear games aren't as important now. I haven't found a great "launch" move anyway.

The Limited Edition came with this DVD that I think has videos on how to play characters and such, but I haven't delved into that yet.

I know Shiri is getting this, but he has the wrong system. Also noticed Nienla has a BB avatar.

My Xbox Live tag is Deshrin if anyone wants to play.

I like to use Jin a lot. Where he lacks frontal attacks, he makes up for it in his distortions and long distance/mid-ranged freezing abilities. Plus I think he's awesome. <3

Taokaka is my other main. She's hard to properly use at first, but she can string some nasty damaging combo's together once you know how to use her. She's also my Avatar because anyone who has fought someone who knows how to use Taokaka knows she is an evil character to fight.

And from time to time, I will use Arakune. It's not hard to be him really. Just curse and release bees constantly and you should win. tongue.gif

Carl is a bit more difficult to use as you have to learn how to properly sync him and his puppet together effectively to do any real damage.

Taokaka <3 !
Unknown2009-07-14 16:58:23
I've only played BB in arcades so far, since I lack the proper consoles. ;_; I mained Taokaka (<3) first, but I'm starting to learn Rachel-sama as I don't have the skill to perform said nasty damaging combos with Tao.

Hopefully, if/when I get the money, the console bit will be remedied!

Anyone with the correct console (! *cuff Alban*) can feel free to challenge me, maining Taokaka and Nyu. Tao is supposedly the second hardest character to play besides Carl but I can't do crap with Litchi and drive loops are ok once you get enough practice with the timing (taunt loops are a whole other issue.) Nyu is easy mode, ha.

Great game, story is better than GG's, graphics are incredible, combos are hard but easier than censor.gif 1-frame SF links, online is fairly good considering I'm mostly playing Americans from England (played the guy who made "I wanna be the guy" today, his Tager was pretty good.)

Might have tried Arakune but I have my drive on a face button so negative edging all the BEES is a no no (same poblem with Carl, can barely even get 2C8D loop to work correctly, much less the sandwich strings.)

Also, the limited edition version is the same price as the regular one so you may as well get it if you can but the tutorial video is not that great - it includes a bunch of concepts only like 1/4 of even the people who buy it to give it a try will have any idea about. The gief-style Tager tutorial was pretty funny though. "Like Communism, the A version of Gigantic Tager Driver is INVINCIBLE!...for a while." Good stuff.

Nyu is easy mode, yes. Though I've been beating most with Jin and Tao. murphy.gif

Though I have been playing Bang for the hilarity of his character.

What's hard about frame linkers?
Shiri2009-07-15 10:06:14
1-frame linkers, not links in general!

I'm speaking specifically of SF! They even have a training mode that teaches you how to do them!
Shiri2009-07-15 10:24:46
They have a training mode that tells you the combo, then tells you that you did it wrong.

EDIT: Here's a tournament match for people who don't know this game. Notice the distinct lack of rainbow-emitting lolis a la SWR.

P.S alban, launch combos are critical, there just aren't any epilepsy-inducing lights while you do it like with dust. Both my characters have huge air combos for like 4k+ each if done properly. If you're playing Carl and Tager obviously they don't because they can't...move off the ground (Carl technically has an aerial infinite but that doesn't really count). Watching two Arakunes try to fight each other is hilarious too, they're in the air spazzing around like 80% of the time or more until one of them lands some BEES.

I swear the people in this game have never heard of zoning.
Shiri2009-07-15 15:32:41
C-spamming Nyus and electric chair spamming Rachaels? Yeeep.

Watch some of the "top tier" finals. There's a reason the zangief-equivalent dominates to the Finals, looking at semis/quarters/qualis. Everyone tries to rush him down. Do you know what happens if you rush down zangief?

Zoning isn't just about proper distance control, it's also about punishing.
Shiri2009-07-15 16:33:16
Oh, that. To be fair, those are just qualifiers, Zangief equivalent normally is bottom tier despite untechable fullscreen command throws. The Nyu that beat that particular Tager is up for Tougeki I think this month, should be interesting.

He (that Tager) went to the Finals in both tournaments. It's the same with people that aren't zoning Carl's puppet properly as well. So far, Kaqn is the only player properly avoiding it and teching out of falls/dashes to avoid landing on clap.

The Nu-13 that beats that Tager zones properly, in fact, the whole character is built around zoning from all the replays I've seen. I've also seen characters with the tools to zone him dashing in to try and link combos on him. Even though he gets hit occasionally it's not worth the 60% throw-combos you take 90% of the time.

Edit: Just for reference, you'll notice that there is a difference between "fireball spammers" and "proper zoning" in SF.

Iron Tager looks like such a beast in those videos when he gets on a roll with the grabs and throws.

Yeah, there are actually some comments on the video of people saying the opponent shouldn't have been rushing Tager.

It's the same muscle-memory reflex garbage people who learn dash/jumpins always do. You should have seen the immense bitching about Zangief from Shotokens whose whole routine revolved around the high-priority jumpin.

Edit: Dustloop forums are as bad as I imagined. Carl's subsection is 900 requests for infinite tutorials. Ugggghghhh.

Carl's is one of the few there that doesn't have a combo/discussion sticky thread, which I have found to be pretty useful.

Random note: A friend of mine that lives nearby is the mod of Anji's board on those forums.
