Toy Event

Back to Common Grounds.

I would've liked it if there were some actual toys in the bubble, just so that us low-lifes that couldn't get to the bubble before Ilyarin wtfpawned time and somehow made it there in seconds could get a few dingbats, I fell asleep on the way there, so had to go back and use the font, then took damage to the chair, and lagged a lot sad.gif

Other than that, a very nice event smile.gif
Ilyarin2009-07-23 13:09:36
It actually took me a while. I got to an aetherbubble first and was like "wahoo! I don't recognise this place!", got out, and realised it was Cankermore. I was sad. sad.gif Then I ran around a bit more until I found it. Took me a while but I was in a superspeedy :censor:. <3

A toy fink champion says, "Ahehehe... Wha'chu'wan'na do, eh? Time ter ask jus'
one question, biggy. Joo feelin' lucky?"
A toy fink champion grins a wicked, fanged grin as he advances, drawing a set of
bladed toy weapons.

Awesome

That doesn't really help people who can only play a few hours a day, just hurts people who can play a lot.

The less people going after them, the more chance someone who isn't there often can attempt to get them.

Any system that makes it easier for the casual gamer to get a reward than the overactive involved gamer is going to "punishing" the overactive involved gamer.

In a system where rewards can only be gained competitively, then I suppose that has a measure of truth.

But what if the toys were released every 30 minutes or an hour automatically instead of having to have a person there to push a button. Then say that they spawn randomly at locations where a player is, like Tervic said. This happens for a set period of time.

In this way the casual players will get a casual amount, and the overactive players get an 'overactive' amount, but in their pursuit of this they have not brought down the amount that a casual player can get.

But in most IRE games and events, it's pretty easy for one person to mess something up for another person. There are very limited mobs to bash that can have long respawn times, so it's possible for things to be "bashed out". One person could come in and do something to interrupt a potentially long and difficult quest someone else was doing. And in this case people who are always playing or have been playing a long time have a huge advantage.

I'm not really complaining for myself - I haven't had any time to play in the last week, so I wouldn't have gotten anything regardless of how the system worked. I'm just saying, it doesn't always have to be done in such a way where someone wins and someone loses. You can set up games so that as long as you play you win, to some degree anyway.
Daganev2009-07-23 17:59:13
That is what they generally do for the artifact gnome, and you still get these threads of people complaining that they don't get anything.

Ontop of that, you'll get people saying "I'm logged in 8 hours a day, and I got nothing, but this guy just logged in for 5 minutes this weak and got two prizes! Its not fair!"

Haha, you mean Ironbeard? Yeah, people can't really complain much about him. But from past experience, I can only really remember one person that actually got seriously upset he hadn't visited them. Since it really was just based on luck, I think most people who whined about him only did so half-heartedly, and usually they'd get a present a few days later and wouldn't whine again. tongue.gif

In order to allow them to spawn where players are, the system would need to be extremely restrictive. For instance, they cannot spawn inside cities (except certain locations), they cannot spawn inside villages (unfair to everyone who isn't a glom) they cannot spawn off-plane (there's no reason for the toys to go off-plane) they cannot spawn underwater, they cannot spawn on water, we can't let them spawn in aethermanses or at people who're idling (they are aggro, after all) we'd need to make sure they don't spawn at certain levels at players below say level 60 or so (their strength is randomized, and a lvl 60 faeling is still probably going to have a time of it fighting them), they cannot spawn.....

Or we can set it up so any admin can push a button and off the toys go to where we want them to go, because instead of Rapture coding it, someone like me can go in and tell them where they CAN go instead of all the exclusions of where they can't. Which saves about five hours. Hm. That sounds really easy. smile.gif

Honestly if we're going to go through the effort of making the toys spawn in people's laps, why aren't we just randomly awarding players dingbats?

I mean, *I* wouldn't see a downside if I logged in with a new message that said "The Toymaker feels really bad about causing trouble, here's twenty dingbats." happydance.gif

Yeah, because Estarra had to make sure it was Eventru proof, otherwise he'd break it.

Yeah, why aren't you? tongue.gif

And the "can't spawn at people who are idling".... people aren't supposed to be idling anyways, and it'd be funny for the toys to be quasi-enforcers of that. Well... it'd be funny to me, at any rate. And from the code-side.... why does it have to be set up as an exclusion list and not a permissions list? Couldn't you just say "at spawn at in "? Sorry, my programmer's curiosity has been awakened, and the questions aren't meant to be a critique.
Damadreas2009-07-23 18:55:13

The majority of these idlers will just sit there and waste herbs as their system saves them, if that's what the situation was
Richter2009-07-23 19:01:29
Shoot, been away for a few days and missed this. Hope some people will still sell me dingbats...

Well I'm sure they could (though for some reason I feel like it'd be less intensive for the game to pick people at random and then check their area versus checking area searching for players in it and then randomly picking one) - but it doesn't change the fact there's a ton of exclusions (or inclusions, however you honestly want to look at it - a ton of checks, let's say) and then you'd just see people sitting in the roads and mountains idling waiting for toys to spawn on them. Which just seems silly to me.

I think the way it is right now is optimal. While I'm a big proponent of free stuff, there is such thing as 'too much of a good thing', and we don't want to A) entirely ruin the dingbat market and cool.gif make it so you guys never need dingbats again! rolleyes.gif

Ah, I noticed this, what with the "Giving out 1k dingbats for defying physics." thing you did with Ilyarin tongue.gif
Unknown2009-07-23 20:06:09
The event was a good idea, although Richter was pretty pissed about paying so much for dingbats, and not knowing they were giving them out for free...

And the random times for toys makes for a good way to keep players online! Jerks!

Well, the infamous Toymaker is still alive - somewhere! And toys are still rollin' in.
Unknown2009-07-23 21:19:47
I never bought any toys or participated at all, really, but I loved the event nonetheless. Seeing everyone get bit in the ass for being greedy buggers makes me warm inside.
