One thing I would also consider (though it may be negligible), in aetherspace hunting you are not spending the money on any of your usual bashing equipment - herbs, potions, scrolls, etc. It's also a very low cost of entry where level does not affect what you can hunt, but instead requires a ship (and most city/communes, if not all, have at least one fairly large aethership that can be used for hunting).
a ship with three turrets, a grid, hold, and chair costs 2 million gold (350k+150k*5+125k*3+25k+150k+250k)
Lawliet2009-07-28 23:02:50
Yeah, you can't really say, "Yeah, well you don't spend money on potions or equipment!" when you have to spend two million gold just to get started, we might as well throw back at you, "Yeah, well we need power to get started which might require hunting which might require potions.", it's a tiny differance, especially when you consider mages/druids/wiccans, who don't need armour or weapons and a lot go without greatrobes, too.

Have you answered the question on proficiency?

Xenthos2009-07-28 23:23:16
You really should ask, as that makes a huge difference.
You need to know these things before discussing the rate of experience/gold.

If you're meaning me, I was 50% since my specialization was Empath. It was only up to like 52% before YOU got me killed.

That's a very small ship, I'd think. That's for fighting low-level aetherspace mobs, whereas something like the dragons/tentacles would require a much bigger ship but also net much higher gains across the board.
Ayisdra2009-07-28 23:47:28
a 16 room ship (1800 health) with all that (and collector) is 3.5 million. the point is that its more costly to just get started hunting than it is to bash.

You missed out on Eventru's point, however.
Once the ship is built, it is built. There is no running cost aside from power, and all organizations have at least one already-built ship with all the modules that the citizenry can use... for no cost at all.

Except for power. Most people who crash a ship don't refuel it. Most people who use power from a ship don't refuel it. Most people who crash a ship don't take it back to the organizational aetherdock. Most people don't act responsibly. Very often, noob-crew will take the ship out to a bubble, die, and not bother retrieving it.
Sorry for the lack of coherency, I just finished designing a 450 base-pair piece of DNA that has no internal homology (it won't stick to itself). I'll probably be dreaming in ATCG tonight >.<

Note that I mentioned "aside from power". It is in your quoting of me.

There is also the fact that the ship might not allow a person of a curtain rank or less to use it.
Example: I couldn't even enter the Glomdoring ship at GR 3 or so back during the Tree of Trees events, yet I was Expert Empath at that time

Some of them, but I know that Ilosia lets everyone in Glomdoring use any of its modules except commander. Commander takes a member of the Swarm (which isn't tough to find someone in). Ilosia is Glom's aethership (though we have a whole host of guild ships and smaller ships, Ilosia's the one we bought as a commune).

Breed a pokemon!
And yes, most cities do have one that you can take out, but if, like me, you want to build your own, what then?
The point is, the money and experiance is STILL awful even if you didn't pay for it, there are better ways and once the newbies realise this they'll stop using it, and you've STILL wasted three million gold.
And what incentive does the city have for building them? Or anyone, if you can't get a return on it?
Sarrasri2009-07-29 00:02:56
Yeah, can't really complain too much. Seren has two commune ships, I know two of the guilds have guild ships, and there's probably more ships available to people. One of Seren's ships is 60 rooms and almost fully equipped, so no complaining there.

Just a question, but with 2 50% combateers... don't you think that you might be able to get more gold / experience with 3 combateers a bit closer to 100%? A lot more, at that, as their crit rate climbs.
Why are you saying the gold/experience sucks? This isn't an adequate test of even the junk mobs.

Unless 50% can somehow jack the money up by, say, 600%, then it's not going to make much of a differance, the money will still be crap compared to the time and investment you put into it.
More importantly though, if I can never find a 100% combateer (which I can't), it makes no differance what I can make with them, because I don't have them. We went out with Asmoth in his three turret ship, actually got less tons in the same time, though the targetting was incredibly bugged...
