hint: it basically already is.

On multiple levels, I'm not impressed with Hallifax's RP, but uh.. not the topic for that.

So I was helping a novice earlier today, telling him to look over an advancement scroll.

You tell Mukyu Jakam, Apprentice of the Way, "Well you can do GHELP MUKYUADVANCEMENT."

You tell Mukyu Jakam, Apprentice of the Way, "After completing that you'll graduate from novicehood faster."

Jakam tells you, "I can't read."

You tell Mukyu Jakam, Apprentice of the Way, "You cant?"

Jakam tells you, "Never bothered to learn. I remember holding a weapon at about six years."

Tell him to advance, he has to learn to read. That's the new requirement.

Or you could actually just do some RP back.

Just have him speak with the NPC trainer for your guild to have the scrolls read to him.

I guess it depends on the nature of your guild and how helpful you would or would not be to someone who could not read, but there are easy ways around it that do not require you to do any extra work.

Though this also requires the player of the illiterate to help. I know this because Atellus could not read or write when he first came out of the portal =) I still have some fun pages in my journal of him being taught how.

That's the most retarded RP ever. Help files aren't even strictly 'read', from an IC perspective... they're just floating bits of information that you can access anywhere. If that were my novice I'd set him back a few hours so he couldn't graduate till he'd "learnt' to use them. Definitely wouldn't waste time regurgitating all of the information to him.

I roleplayed with an illiterate character once, but they kept it to the RP and didn't let it interfere with simple day-to-day things. That way it was interesting without being aggravating... and they did it once they'd already been around awhile. I wouldn't invest that sort of time in a novice who might disappear the next day.

Do me a favour. Click on "Search" in the upper right hand corner, and search for "When they asked my opinion"

I'll guarentee you won't find it.

I used to take the time to go over all our novice scrolls but I don't anymore. One Wyrm said outright that he was 'too lazy to read', but I had some free time and didn't mind sharing as long as the student was willing to listen. After spending over an hour and a half explaining the material, he thanked me for my time, complained that Lusternian is too complicated to play relative to Imperian, said he had to go and never showed his face again.

I was pretty traumatized and this happened at least 3 more times before I decided I could no longer be a undersecretary. I've been griefed dozens of times before but these experiences stand out as amongst the worst.
