I loved Avalon until I noticed it was Pay to Play. Such potential, wasted.
Lehki2009-10-04 19:07:36
Even if the game was mostly just copying off WoW, what's wrong with that if Aion turns out to be fun and sexy looking? It's not like if WoW got it right nobody else is allowed to do something similar and have it be good.

So then a class that can heal, place buffs on the group that function while they are within a certain range of them, and do melee damage with a magically modified weapon doesn't remind you of anything at all?
What about a class that can summon 4 creatures, and deals damage using DOTs?
A class attacks primarially uses ranged weapons, but is proficient in melee as well, and uses traps?

1. Friar. Existed before WoW, in fact, it is nearly exactly the same class. It was taken from daoc. Shaman is nothing like Chanter, try it sometime.
2. Summon four elemental creatures? Why hello there, let me refer you to this:
http://strategywiki.org/wiki/EverQuest/Cha...lasses/Magician
Oh what's that? Elemental four pets? A summon player spell? A set of nukes and dots? Existed before WoW? NO WAY JOSE!
3. Rangers. D&D. Rangers. EQ. Doesn't use pets. Not even close to a WoW hunter.

Not at all. If you want to wear plate armour as a caster, you just have to be able to deal with the consequential drop in casting success
Yes, and such is why they didn't wear it. From those roots was born the system used in TorilMUD of restricting gear specifically based on class. This was carried over into the graphical representation of TorilMUD, also known as Everquest.

Burning Legion: Army of Demons dedicated to the destruction of life and order. Immensely powerful and strike from the Twisting Nether.
Balaur: Army of Draconic beings and their allies dedicated to the destruction of the current races of the world. Immensely powerful, and strike from the Abyss.

Burning Legion, confronted by both as a serious affront. The Asmodians and Elyos want to wipe eachother out, the Balaur just get in the way. There is far more to the balaur than that quote but I'm sure you don't care because the game is so similar to WoW you could never play it.
QUOTE
Character customization is nice, but from a vanilla, planned standpoint, the Asmodians will be significantly more bestial. And maybe it is part of Lore. It's part of Lore that Orcs are green and former slaves. I'm not contesting the backstory, I'm stating the fact that there is a "Pretty side" and an "Ugly side".
Once again, that's aesthetics. Saying that Blizzard invented good races being pretty and evil races being ugly is just astounding.

I'll let you know when Onyxia drops morrowstrike for me. I've been farming her for it for the past 2 weeks, damn near constantly. Not one drop yet. I don't really care about grinding or not. All that quests do is make it seem like you're doing more then that when you go kill 30 Naga. It's farming XP whether you call it that or not.
That is nothing compared to actual group grinding. Do you know why they call them Korean grinders? Do you know what the core differences are between eastern and western marketplaces as far as MMO's go? It doesn't make either game better, but it certainly makes them different. In WoW you can level purely off quests. You have to kill mobs for them, but you don't have to literally kill 16000 mobs to level. Quests don't take you to 15% into the level and tell you to stand in a field killing mobs till you get the other 85%. That's what a Korean grinder is.
Everquest was the greatest success of its time. Computer games weren't even popular back then, let alone subscription based ones. This is like comparing "the highest grossing movie of all time," in which you have to take into account how many people were seeing movies and what the dollar was actually worth at the time. How many people have pc's now compared to in the 90's? Internet? A connection capable of supporting gaming?
My point isn't that Aion is better than WoW, it's that anyone who writes any game off immediately due to "being a copy of WoW" is being ridiculous, given that WoW stole 90% of its elements, hell even its core story is warhammer fantasy. The original warcraft rts was a discarded version of GW's port to american markets. It's like people who say every fantasy novel is invalid because they all just copy tolkien. My point still stands that the game (Aion) takes far more from EQ/DAOC than WoW.
As for Avalon vs Achaea of course they're similar, mihaly's first engine was hourglass, licensed from the creators of avalon. 90% of all IRE skills, lusternia included, have exact versions still in Avalon.
Serella2009-10-04 21:07:56
So this must be the Aion that was delaying gg's fansubs

Well Desipuss, if that's your point, then you need to re-read my posts again. I've primarialy been griping about the lack of a free trial this entire thread, I just like arguing with people.

I think most people are very happy there was no free trial at launch, you already had to sit 2 hours in a queue when you paid for your subscription, giving you got in the queue in the first place (for Europe anyway). Besides I can not remember a single subscription mmorpg that had a free trial at launch but then Aion is the second mmorpg I preordered so I might not have noticed it on others.

I'm too poor to buy games without testing or serious review-browsing first. My income for the month lately has been near 0.
Desitrus2009-10-05 02:14:50
They had ... six (?) free preview events? Not to mention beta access for pre-ordering, which at some places you don't even have to put money down.
Unknown2009-10-05 02:18:48
Anyway I wasnt saying Aion looked like other games, I was merely pointing out the lack of innovation. PC gamers should demand innovation, instead of just being handed the same cup of soup over and over again and loving it because they dont know any better. And before you say Aion is innovative, really think about it.
Romero2009-10-05 12:08:19
Gero, me, Jozen, Ruiku are in a single guild called Jhagar again. Inviting others who want to join up.
As for why there is no trial, it had 400k preorder, I think on opening day. And had to open two new servers to fit the load.
Jozen is going supersaiyan while Ruiku pulls aggro.
Will show some more pics later.

Only level 15? Slow. I haven't played for a week and my 'sin is still sitting on 24 waiting for my friends to catch up.

We just started 2 days ago.

Aion: Master's Challenge If you're not familiar with the show, you may not quite get it, but I find the way he talks about these games amusing enough.

Out of curiousity, previews said you'd be able to re-style your gear to make it look how you want it to. What's the deal on that? Yea, or Nay?

It's not like an insane morph your own weapon kind of thing, but you can get any item restyled like other items or vendor only designs. High end drops are unique but you can get some pretty cool styles going on.

Get used to it. What's that? Ice Claws are the same catpeople at 28-33? What's that? Mistmane Maus are the same at 33-40?
This is not to say there isn't variety in the game monsters, as they have a ton of unique ones. It's just the group elite grinding mobs are almost exclusively Mau or Lepharist.
