I think you're reading imaginary sarcasm into Saaga's post. Five million speakers does put a language quite squarely in the superfluous category. Finnish ranks 103rd in number of native speakers, below things like Turkmen, Catalan, Ilokano, and other distinctly "dead" languages.

Everyone I know here around my age (with the exception of a few people who are a bit too extreme on the nationalism thing) pretty much agree that, yeah, things sound a million times stupider in their own language than it does in English.
Then again, everything sounds a million times stupider in English than it does in LATIN!
