Defenses for Gaudiguch/Hallifax

Back to Common Grounds.

I know what that means, and it makes me sad....

As much as I hate to be attributed to the sad sack of mass flaming and inflated egos that is this thread, I would really enjoy some set form of deterrent to nexus-camping. 3-4 times now I was deterred from going and exploring because, hey, what do you know, we're being camped. As of yet my enjoyment of my awesome new org has been limited to prime plane. So yeah, even though I seem to get the impression that guards won't do all that much, please, the illusion of safety can be important. Yeah, I just thought it should be clear that, though only an "inconvenience", it is something that is physically hampering my enjoyment of the game.

Fremen sounds like an appropriate Gaudi monk guild name, too.

If camping is an issue crank up the astral insanity on the new cities respective planes. Guards won't stop camping it will just shift where they camp.

Don't you need a Construct to cause insanity?
Unknown2010-01-07 21:01:35
I think the mage/guardian discretionary powers cause insanity. Which wouldn't help at all on the cosmic planes, but I suppose it would work for air/fire raids (well, air raids, dun think there are fire raids tongue.gif). If that's the solution rather than guards, the power cost for flux should be halved for the time being.
Rodngar2010-01-07 21:56:44
There are no Fire raids because we lack the manpower to do so, and I'm pretty sure every single non-comm in Hallifax (there's obviously a ton of them) would cry really, really hard about paperwork or some other excuse why we can't.
Unknown2010-01-07 21:59:43
Yeaah, my wittle halli alt hears a lot of "No, what if they decide to retaliate?!"

Rodngar2010-01-07 22:05:29
I always have to restrain myself lest I point out the hole in their argument - that being, they don't need an excuse to come attack us, they already do it without retaliating. I'm sure they'd nip back a little harder if we raided Fire, but really.. the raids are not as bad as anybody is making them out to be. Could they be that bad? Easily. The point is that they are not. A lot (not ALL) of the people really whining about the raids are the ones who don't bother to really defend or just.. well.. aren't cut out for PK. I try to say that as softly as I can, but in the end, it's true.

Yup. Non-coms trying to make combat decisions should be slapped and told of shut it, even if they're CR6. In war, the most esteemed senator shuts up and listens to the lowliest grunt. His ass is in their hands.

In reality, how often does it work like that?
Unknown2010-01-07 22:30:28
What do you mean? If for some reason a bunch of terrorists were battering down the doors of the Capitol building, I'm pretty sure that's how it would work. I don't mean on a day-to-day basis.
Rodngar2010-01-07 22:35:28
This is not that situation, though. Instead, people take rank as license to order whom they like, really. It's how it works in internet communities. In any case, I think the problem is more prevalent in Hallifax, were non-comms feel like they are concentrated.. especially when their inability to PK (and instead do things like write a book or describe a painting) is recognized on a level of equality with the ability to PK in any other organization. It feels like Hallifax is screwing itself with its disregard for rewarding the people sticking their necks out every day to defend Air and Continuum in an effort to foster an environment of creativity or 'intelligence', so to speak. My words to Rika, I think, were "if people weren't defending Hallifax, that work wouldn't matter at all" - by virtue of most of it being very Hallifax-centric or specific to their ideals and systems of belief (science, etc).
Unknown2010-01-07 22:40:38
Bahaha, you guys really need to throw Cririk out ASAP.

(Hallifax): Cririk says, "I require additional recommendations for favours."

(Hallifax): Cririk says, "Excellent, now I would also like a few suggestions that do not directly relate to bashing out the brains of other individuals."

(Hallifax): Rodngar says, "Put lightly, Senator, if it weren't for us bashing those brains out, I don't think you'd have a city to favour."

(Hallifax): Arte says, "Indeed, our scientists' brains would be in a deplorable condition."

(Hallifax): Cririk says, "Which is why you have been given a proper caste in this city. One below the merchants, bureaucrats, scientists and artists."

Arr-pee is great, but until the mechanics of the game are drastically altered, the fact is that the bureaucrats, scientists and artists don't matter at all besides getting you bonus culture points.
Rodngar2010-01-07 22:43:39
It goes on further than that, just post the whole thing. tongue.gif

Neh I feel dirty spying on them like this. I'ma go gallivant around Gaudiguch.

(Hallifax): Cririk says, "And above the slaves, servants and free employees."

(Hallifax): You say, "Perhaps the policy should be looked over again, then, Senator."

(Hallifax): You say, "Because honestly, I'm not so sure that will, pardon the pun, fly for long with most people."

(Hallifax): Cririk says, "You are in no position to state this, Citizen Rodngar. You will remember your appropriate caste and place. If you wish to bring up concerns you will either do so privately or strive to gain entrance to a higher caste."

(Hallifax): You say, "I believe my striving is done in an manner as equally important as writing a book or painting a picture, Senator."

(Hallifax): You say, "But I am sure you will disagree."

(Hallifax): Cririk says, "The city does not exist to serve you, Commoner Rodngar, you exist to serve the Collective. You may continue to strive as you have and eventually come to occupy your proper place within the society of the Commonwealth. You will remember your proper place or I shall remind you of it."

I can't tell you how many people sent me a tell agreeing with me, really. Cririk is not a good leader if he doesn't realize the value of soldiers/troops (PKers) and the proper way to retain them. I think they need to relinquish control now and let us govern ourselves.
Rika2010-01-07 22:51:37
Meh, I don't like it but what can you do? I like Cririk in general, but this is a really bad idea. He's basically saying no to anyone who would rather PK than write books.
Ileein2010-01-07 22:54:40
Really, what's the alternative? Giving high rank to what Hallifax would, from an RP perspective, see as brawny tools, means to an end, would be a little... off. At least, as long as combat is really the only thing they're doing.
Unknown2010-01-07 22:58:39
Give them equal status, at the very least. As long as you're able to act halfway intelligent and fight at the same time. There's a happy medium between being completely useless (no system, no aliases, no cures) and being a Vathael or a Munsia (ie tolerated only because of your combat ability).
