Having your stockroom emptied out is not the same as having npcs killed or losing a bardic competition. An org's npcs dying costs them absolutely nothing, unless it's a guard, and... ah screw it I don't know how some of you can even tie your shoes.
It's still an IC emotional event. If someone was mass murdering all of your citizens, you would certainly feel a loss and feel you'd been wronged. Losing a bardic is more costly arguably. Most shops don't have the even 50-100 credits worth of crap in them (Lowest bardic prizes), let alone the upper ones. The shops that DO, usually have competent shopkeepers.
Sorry, this is all about people being lazy. Its like running into a fight with no defenses. You're going to lose (something) by being lazy.

Uh what? You're comparing entering a contest and losing to having your shop being robbed?
Unknown2010-01-14 01:57:45
Losing a bardic isn't costly because - see if you can wrap yer head around this - it doesn't cost you anything. I guess you wasted some time writing it, but you can still publish it for culture points (and some orgs award a token amount of gold or credits to those who contribute to culture).
It's not a matter of anyone being lazy, it's a matter of them being either unlucky or unfamiliar with the game's mechanics.

Thank you. Nuff said.

My time does cost something, yes. It's more valuable than any IG item.
Whatever. Theft here is almost unheard of in this game anyhow. Someone obviously got a little hurt from a recent event and emailed support. Do whatever ya'll want.

Unless your career allows you to work on an hourly wage 24/7, then I doubt this.

My brain cells are now committing ritual suicide with tiny, tiny katanas.
Why the hell does Google Chrome's spellchecker not recognize katana as a word.
Or spellchecker.

The pattern here seems to be pretty clear.
Anti-Shop-Theft: Shop theft destroys the results of a significant amount of effort and investment in terms of time and money (whether IC or OOC).
Anti-Anti-Shop-Theft: Stop whining you should just use sigils.
Does anyone have an actual reason to continue allowing shop theft? I mean, other than realism, since that argument pretty much falls apart in the face of, oh, (element)-mancers, aetherships and being able to carry hundreds of pounds of items without breaking a sweat.

I've been asking that for a few pages now, heh.

Most of the major robberies I've heard of have been bug exploits. And, sigils can't stop people from robbing a shop in the way that my Achaea shop was robbed. My aliases for entering/exiting will stop that particular method now, but how many other tricks are out there undisclosed to shopkeepers, I wonder?
Besides the need to replenish millions of gold worth of items that took months to collect and stock, there's also the feeling of helplessness as the thief simply hides and gloats. We have no real recourse to get back at a thief who is beyond the reach of Avechna, or any assassin, while they sit at their nexus and/or QQ until the whole thing blows over and they're free to try the next one.

It's just one more mechanically imposed limitation. Barring actual exploits, I enjoy being surprised by the clever ways people come up with to get what they want.

I once had a guy who stalked/watched my character with the intent of robbing her shop (in order to upset me-the-player) until I got careless one night at 3am. He promptly destroyed everything and went back into inactivity - he'd done it for an OOC buddy who also played. I didn't find out who it was until over a year later when someone told me "OH PS the guy who destroyed all your designs was..."
Kharaen2010-01-14 03:33:51
Then have the sign in your shop say "PLEASE ROB ME, I THINK ITS KINKY". Otherwise, shush. Roberries are not fun.

Pyromancy, Geomancy and Aeromancy are rl practices, Aquamancy is kinda but it's not refered to as such.
yay for malapropisms

I bet you wouldn't be saying this if you were in the position of one of those robbed.

That's not what that word means.
Also, "real" Aeromancy doesn't summon magic animals or electrocute people.

My shop has sigils. Although it hasn't been stocked in forever. If I got robbed because of something I looked over (aka not exploited), I'd be calling myself a retard for a long time. Would I try to get retribution against the one who did it in game (If I knew)? Sure. But it would have still been my fault for giving them the opportunity.
As a reference, I was an avid player of Avalon, where theft ACTUALLY occured, and was more than once team stripped. Does it suck? Yes. Does it feel unfair? Yes. But you deal with it. Get better. Be aware.

Theft is so horrible but no one wants to spend even 100 gold on shop insurance!
Unknown2010-01-14 03:50:33
Shopkeepers just need to HARDEN UP if they want to be top-tier merchants.
