I think it would be good to see a mechanic implemented that allowed players to send a message to the appropriate Admin (like bugs) when a new character is created that has a poor or inappropriate name, and be able to provide reasons for why they believe the name was inappropriate/should be changed.
I love newbies. But I hate approaching them OOCly off the bat with something so trivial and potentially sour their experience of the game. I also hate that a number of people often send the offending newbie tells as they're not sure whether it's been addressed or not, not to mention it cropping up over CGT from time to time. This sort of communication should come from Guides or in their absence, Gods, not players.
What I had in mind was something like this:
This way Guides and/or Admin can review and perhaps send messages to newbies who need to have a namechange before its too late, and newbies don't get hassled when they need to focus on more important things - like having fun! :)
(sorry for the ugly codebox - it wasn't putting in spaces like I wanted it to)

There is usually a guide about most od the time and they have ways of gently broaching the subject with the newbies. Though most people with rediculous names like that are just idiots being idiots.
Svorai2012-02-20 07:46:07
I wouldn't say there's a Guide present most of the time. Some of the time, sure. There have been a number of true newbies that I've had to deal with who had ridiculous names - some people join thinking that this will be their username (even if it is explained in the intro).
It was just an idea to make this something handled completely OOCly such that players didn't feel they had to break rp to bring it up. But whatever, it's the Ideas thread! On to the next idea.

I dunno. We have several long term players with such names, like Shuyin amongst others. I don't think that the admins generally care about *cough* references in names.
Neos2012-02-20 16:36:06
Don't think she means ooc referencing names, more stupid/inappropriate/etc names, eg: Penisface, TheBigBadBoss, etc.

Well, that isn't what the example she gave (Severus) implies, but stupid and inappropriate names generally get corrected very quickly already by the guides.

Like I said, it was a suggestion that might improve the fact that, in the absence of Guides, players feel they need to break character and inform the newbie that they should look at HELP NAMES. It was suggested so that this was handled in a completely OOC manner to improve relations with newbies. Anyway, let's move on! It's been established that others don't believe this to be a mechanic that would be worthwhile. I'm cool with that.
Fyi, I gave three examples - one being a pretty dumb name which could be interpreted poorly, one being too close to the name of a current player, the other a character from a popular series. :)

Could we please get the ability to preface our names with emoting? So that doing "
would display to everyone in the room:
It would boost the use of emoting, I betcha.
EMOTE (Whistling absentmindedly,) polishes her scimitar with an oily cloth.

I would love that, but I've heard that we can't because people would use it to emulate illusions and screw with each other's systems.
Enyalida2012-02-20 22:58:05
Er, all current clients (afaik) allow you to filter things by color, so that it only matches certain colors on certain colors. You can CONFIG emotes to be whatever colors you want, on any background, neatly sidestepping that issue!
I know that on mush at least, you could even set something to match the combination you give to emotes at a very low sequence and then don't click 'keep evaluating' to automatically filter that combination from getting checked by any other trigger.

I can't see any harm in just giving emoting an absurdly long balance. Would stop this dead in its tracks for those people unable to filter in such a way.
Lendren2012-02-20 23:10:00
I'm not saying I agree with the reason, just that that's what always comes up. Of course, some things that got turned down a dozen times have been implemented in the last few months, so it couldn't hurt to try!

Not so simple simple idea. Implement royalties on all crafts. The difference between this and bookbinding royalties is that the designer would get a percentage of the royalty fee - for simply designing the piece. So Mark designs a ring for instance. In order to prevent ungodly amounts of bulk items, which was one of the big issues with the shop stockroom thing, each ring has a royalty fee to create. Whenever a person makes Mark's design, he gets 25% of the gold in the royalty magically deposited in his bank account. If there was a cartel that was used as well, then that cartel gets another 25% of the gold of the royalty deposited to the respective bank account. 50% of the remaining money then would go back to the system.
This way, designers would get money for doing what they love. Don't quote me on this, but I remember Shulamit telling me about the expenses of designing, and Zeebin at one point. This would be a source of income for them and all the many designers as well. It would also serve as a continuous gold sink. For public designs that don't have a designer listed, money would go back to the system.
---
Another idea is the idea of permits. Cartels can sell permits to people to make their crafts, renewable each year. There is the clan system where money is taken from the bank accounts each year, but it's the same fee for everyone. So that person A's permit can't be set at 5k and person B's at 10k each year.

I don't know about the royalties thing, what's to prevent unscrupulous people from marking another person's design as their own to rake in the royalties?

Presumably public designs wouldn't be allowed royalties, and private designs would be royaltied to the designers name. I suppose old designs wouldn't get royalties, since they are unmarked.
Enyalida2012-02-21 06:11:25
How do old royalties work anyways? I have no idea.

Nobody does. I don't even think they work.

I'm pretty sure it's for books that have a fee to check out from the Library. Except I'm not aware of anybody actually ever setting fees on Library books.
Enyalida2012-02-21 11:38:49
It's like clan fees, I'm aware of exactly one clan that had fees (The Merchant's Guild), and that was quite an exceptional exception. Lusty economy just doesn't work that way.

If you designed something, and someone else takes the credit, you can probably issue yourself to correct that problem.

There is also an outlay fee (edit: i referred to this fee as royalty, sorry for the confusion) that must be paid to create a new book, don't forget about that :)
