They can still interfere by diverting and winning the influence battle themselves. This just prevents forced-smugging.

You've never tried diverting a mob someone was influencing, have you? There's nothing really to stop them from just resuming their influencing whilst you regain your equilibrium. To do it effectively, you need someone else with you to start influencing immediately after you divert.

you can't force smugging, but avoiding it does require you to actually pay attention and move in time
@Zarquan I just continue to influence and change mindsets, more often then not I win the denizen and can focus on debating out the other person. But the other person can always move.

That's a problem of people not properly using the resources at their disposal. First, you use dramatics to make the denizen hard to influence. Then, you divert. This restores a lot of denizen ego, but the denizen retains stubbornness to the attacks that have been used. You can rob someone of a potential influence without a ton of effort.
