Progenitus is actually playable in good decks as long as you're not casting him though. He kills you in two hits more or less full stop. What do you mean he never hits either? It's not like you can block him. There's wrath, and there's like...fog, and that's about it.

See, I wouldn't play Progenitus either. I play a Genju of the Realms in a casual deck as its reward for five colors. I'd much rather have the 8/12 trample that won't stay dead for 5 mana than the 10/10 that never dies but never hits either for 10 mana.

Manageable mana costs are important if you intend to hard cast things. If not, they could cast four million mana for all that it matters.
Progentius is seeing tons of play in Hypergenesis decks, i.e. decks that could feasibly play Eldrazi. Granted, those aren't Standard. Also, as SCG pointed out on Twitter, Sneak Attack. 6 permanents destroyed unless they have colorless removal immediately and a swing from a 15/15 flyer. Even if he's immediately destroyed you get an extra turn, one red mana. Sure, you can't reanimate Eldrazi or actually ever hardcast them (short of a combo deck that has better things to be doing or new stuff from RoE we haven't seen yet) but there are still ways to dent your opponent's face with them.
Shiri2010-03-24 08:12:18
You don't get an extra turn, you have to cast him to get that.

Ah, true, misread. Still not a bad thing to toss out for R.
Xavius2010-03-24 09:35:33
Better way to get your extra turns.

Wow, that is one awkwardly formatted card. Not sure how good he is. 7 mana for repeated timewalks but over multiple turns. But you have to wait till the end of the other guy's turn to get it and he dies to everything and isn't really 2 mana. I'm gonna go with "not worth it." Kinda cool concept though.
Rodngar2010-03-24 19:29:00
Good group game card.

One would think he starts with one level counter, but the reminder text doesn't say that, so I'm not going to assume that. You have to cast him, pour seven mana into him, then wait out your opponents turn until you get a time walk. Since level up is sorcery speed, you can't even cast him and level him to 4 toughness immediately to dodge Bolt or something, they're respond to the first level up with removal. I hate using the "he dies to everything" argument, because look at stuff like Baneslayer that still kicks ass, but Time Warp is FAR more useful in this case.

Are we talking about the Alpha edition card that's banned in every format and not even really kosher in casual play?

Time stretch then. It's not hard to build mana for it. If you REALLY want to be a dick, Mirari the Time Stretch and take 4 turns after that one.

Time Warp is from M10, sorcery, 3UU, target player takes an extra turn after this one. http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Det...iverseid=191379
Xavius2010-03-25 01:39:00
Aha. Time Warp is not Time Walk. I did not know that that effect was reprinted. Yes, that would be a better plan for most blue decks. If you're running blue/green and have creature buffs in the deck anyways, I'd probably run the Chronologist. Shroud is ubiquitous and cheap.
Shiri2010-03-25 03:52:11
I'm also kinda liking hyena aura. It reminds me of gryphon guide except you also keep any snazzy abilities the guy may have (or retain more beef if you cast it on a green guy.) Which means it'll definitely see play in block and MAYBE some fringe play in standard too. It's one of those cards I always want to be good but usually isn't.
Ikkan2010-03-25 04:07:01
Progenitus was also played in a Staff of the Progeniter deck as a one-of, funny interactions to let you literally rig your entire deck (or pop out Progenitus...good times).
I think all the big Eldrazi are a great way to sorta cap what you should be expecting at those mana pools...I'm just looking forward to more options than rawr rawr rawr Jund. (I suppose USA control is good...but big scary fatties are back yay!)

I will not shed a tear when cascade rotates.

Amen. Most of the cascade cards are underpowered to make up for it...then you get Bloodbraid Elf and Bitumunous Blast and it can go into sprouting thrinax -rage-
The r/b deck that won in kuala lampur came out ahead of the 6/8 jund decks in the top8, lolz to metagame~

Even the crazy underpowered cards with Cascade have seen play. Look at something like Seismic Swans, where you can basically guarantee what you're drawing since everything in the damn deck has cascade. Let alone things like Elf which are decent on their own. It's just a silly mechanic to have printed.

Cascading Burn decks are amazing. They rape me, but it's such an incredibly fun way to win that I can't get pissed.
Ikkan2010-03-25 21:15:34
Some of the other cascade stuff does see play, but it's not nearly as crushing as Jund's ability to cascade into brutal removal. Both Jund and r/b burn puts you on a fairly consistent 5-turn clock, though r/b has the suicidal flavour I enjoy
I mean yeah, there's WW, USA control, various iterations of Naya...but they usually get squished :<. I wants more flavour!
