It is good for causing grief.

Great for conflict, neutered here.

Great for conflict, causing unneeded suffering, thankfully neutered here.

Theft isn't good for anything but cheap laughs for those with no sense of decency.

I'm curious as to what prompted this. Didn't we just have a big boring topic about theft?
Xenthos2010-02-03 00:19:57
I am asking because someone of rather high stature got robbed today (though he was being a bit stupid, I still don't find that an acceptable excuse for theft; not a fan of the thing). Even if he is The Enemy™.

I think theft can be tied into RP somewhat although its pretty tough. I'm all good with being Hobbesian though and just neutering theft because it just makes people emotional.

How? Through dominate? He didn't have selfishness up, I'm guessing? It's simple enough to avoid unless you're afk in a vulnerable area, in which case it's probably your own fault.

He was AFK at his nexus for a very, very long time.

I'm aware. You'll note I made a comment that he wasn't exactly being smart, heh. I just wanted to raise the issue when it was "relevant".

Well, if the game didn't impose so many other artificial mechanics limiting people getting at other people, those wronged (Or their friends) could exact revenge on the person who did it, thus making theft have real consequences. As it stands, there are entirely too many ways to hide forever and not be attacked for people to get punished IC for their transgressions - another thing I think is wrong. As it stands, when someone DOES find a way to steal, the only recourse they have is to cry to the administration, which just ruins the entire fun of it. No chance for IC dynamics to play out.

I don't know why we're discussing this again, though. It already came out in the shop theft thread. Certain people will always think one way on the subject, and others will always think another way. (And those who support theft will always be labeled as mindless griefers just in it for the lulz, even though I've seen evidence to the contrary in many situations.)

Oh, and this is a role playing game. Last I checked, not everyone is a decent person. I'd actually argue that most people at their base level aren't decent people at all. biggrin.gif

We're discussing it because some guy just got cleaned out today and I feel bad for him.

It's been discussed to death already and the result is that theft is easy enough to avoid and not very common at all. Being AFK for that long is a Bad Idea.
Doman2010-02-03 00:51:31
Who cleaned this person out?

OOC consideration should be prioritized always. Using roleplay as an excuse to be a bastard just makes you an even bigger bastard, and gives weight to those arguing that the internet should be less anonymous.

Perhaps I am the only one but I do not think shop theft should be allowed while I have no problems with personal theft.

Mainly this is due to the scale involved, but it also has to do with the fact that one requires you to be present while the other does not. I also like the various force abilities and what they are add to pvp. If you prevent personal theft then you would have to limit those abilities.

(Those abilities are actually already limited, by the way. Certain things are Not Allowed, mechanically)

It's an obnoxious thing, regardless of who the victim is. See- sum total of entire last thread on the topic.

Robbing mechanics in a game is ok if you actually drop everything on death, but in lusternia that is not true, there is very little risk to robbers in this game and that is why it is just a jerk thing to do.
