Anime

I am swamped with homework lately, and find myself spending way too much time at home now. So I need stuff to watch when I get too bored with my homework.

Figure the easiest thing to find is anime stuff. Now, I'm not too big on anime that doesn't have a big emphasis on fighting stuff. Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai are my two favorite anime shows that I've watched. I also kind of like the shonen jump stuff (One Piece and Bleach), but the amount of filler and how it just drags on annoys me.

So, any tips?

I highly recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It's got big ol' robots, and badassery, and manliness. Oh, and drills.

we got a topic about this, 50 something odd pages of suggestions all waiting for you.

Edit:Here's the link for you!

Shounen shows in the mold of Bleach that are better and don't drag on forever:
Fullmetal Alchemist (either season, preferably 2 but the first few episodes are awful)
Kekkaishi (ongoing manga, series ends at 52 at a good point)

Shounen/seinen that features it but not to that extent:
Baccano! (warning: timeline jumps around more than Haruhi's, pay attention)
Black Lagoon (can't wait for S3)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (beyond the impossible series)
Noein (warning: confusing quantum physics plot)

Less recommended but you might like it:
Darker than Black
Ga-rei Zero
Scrapped Princess?
Xam'd

That should about cover it. Those are all at least watchable, some better than others. I also know a bunch of the better ones that aren't in that demographic/genre so let me know if you're interested in those some other time. suspicious.gif

I'm just going to recommend some crap that I like (though not all of it is action-y).

Cromartie High
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop

There are probably others, but I don't really give two :censored:s about anime any more.
Kalaneya2010-02-18 15:23:37
Baccano! (good)
Black Lagoon (badass)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (robots)
Code Geass (politics and robots)
Durarara!! (ongoing, but awesome)

And Haruhi didn't live up to the hype, so I don't recommend it, especially if you're all about action.
Shiri2010-02-18 15:55:27
Durarara is less fighty than the others I mentioned, but it's by the author of baccano which is an A++ series and it seems to be an A++ series itself so far. Good stuff.
laxeus2010-02-18 20:51:24
I know I saw it once but I have to say it.
FLCL. One of my alltime favorites.
Cowboy bebop
Ruroni kenshin/ Samurai x
Excel Saga
Trigun
Ghost In the Shell
Ex-Driver
FMA.

I also saw Code Geass
But It's just that amazing.

Movies:

-Char's Counterattack (MS Gundam)
-Grave of the Fireflies
-Escaflowne
-Jin Roh: Wolf Brigade
-Paprika
-Tekkonkinkreet
-Anything Miyazaki, though according to him it wouldn't be "anime." In my opinion, he does not make poor films. In particular, I would reccomend: Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Nausica of the Valley of the Wind.

Series:

-Code Geass
-Cowboy Beebop
-Eureka 7
-Excel Saga
-Haibane Renmei
-MS Gundam (the original series, not the Wing/G rubbish.)
-Outlaw Star
-Record of Lodoss War
-Serial Experiments Lain
-Wolf's Reign (...if you feel like it)

As far as I can recall, all of these "anime" have little to no emphasis on fighting, with the possible exception of Code Geass, which still has quite little in comparison to Bleach for example, and regardless keeps the focus on some underlying philosophy or aspect of the plot. I never got far with Excel Saga, but it was hilarious. Watch it with at least one friend.

Thank you Daereth, for that link.

For those of you who have seen Lain, Paprika, and Tekkonkinkreet, I am looking for more that is equally surreal and vague. Recommendations appreciated. In case Merik doesn't want his thread split, message me.
Arix2010-02-19 06:52:29
Excel Saga is made of win and wtf, especially the very last episode
Shiri2010-02-19 10:43:10
@Vhaas: Paranoia Agent
Ikkan2010-02-19 14:41:18
I'm personally a huge fan of Gintama, which is an anime that parodies JUMP manga/anime, Japanese culture, and video games amongst other things. I find it quite funny even having not watched most of the things it's making fun of happy.gif

Plus it's free on crunchyroll~

In addition to the recommendation of Eureka 7 (which personally I can't say enough good things about!), you may also want to find Pocketful of Rainbows, which is something of a "re-imagining" of the series by the same studio. Don't watch it until AFTER you have seen the original series, or you will be horribly confused. It is not a sequel.

You might like DNAngel (and you too, Vhaas).

I have yet to get through the whole of Last Exile, but what I've seen of it is pretty good. Kind of surreal and bizarre at first, but that may also be because I've been watching the dub via Netflix's "instant play" program or whatever it is.

Shiri2010-02-19 16:45:58
Last Exile is kind of abstract in some ways to begin with, it's not just the way you're watching it. I would say it's on a similar level to Xam'd in that there are some things that never really get explained and that you can't really figure out yourself, rather than having elements that are obviously open to interpretation. And that isn't a flattering comparison. But it's watchable nonetheless, and the art was really pretty at the time (might still be, was years ago I saw it.)

I don't think it's as bizarre as Vhaas is looking for given that he's naming Lain and Paprika though.

Wolf's Rain*

Last Exile is pretty good, though imo it is not in the same category as Lain or Paranoia Agent. It is more like Wolf's Rain. Unfortunately I can't offer up anything because I haven't watched any lately, beyond Princess Tutu but that's more of a cute anime with a sort of deep story.
Genos2010-02-19 17:42:33
I quite enjoyed Shikabane Hime. It's only 25 episodes long but definitely full of action and whatnot. Basically it's about girls brought back to life by monks to fight evil corpses. Here's a link to Youtube that has all the episodes with minimal commercials. http://www.youtube.com/show?p=NaJU5TUHlF4
