This is just a quick thread to satisfy my curiosity. Do any of you have anything you do before/while you RP to help put you in that frame of mind?

I'll start: Listening to Metallica really helps me get into Lillie's head.
Yeah, I know. Weird.

I imagine Lillie would be scared by Metallica. D:
Kante2010-02-18 01:22:25
No. I just try and get in the head of my characters.

Pretty easy, really. I'm a jerk, they're jerks.

I generally play some music for bashing or PvP, though.

Get a dictionary/thesaurus and open a log so I can keep notes. I have notes going back 4 years of events that happened to me and stuff I owe people. It is nuts...

She would, but for whatever reason, it just helps me. I don't know why. tongue.gif

I still remember this one time, where peoples heads were removed. It was awesome

At one point I did listen to music, be it while hunting and roleplaying, but found that it ultimately detracted from the experience, either in my being distracted with lyrics or becoming too emotionally excited for the situation. Personally, the act requires a clear head and concentration, along with a casual sense of who/what I am playing.

Now, I listen to ambient sounds as well as natural ones such as cavern echoes, rain on the river, or wind through sand or grass.
Everiine2010-02-18 03:05:52
I put on different soundtracks. Frequent ones include all of the MYST soundtracks, particularly Riven; the two Chronicles of Narnia; Avatar; the Lord of the Rings; Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time; 300; The Time Machine; Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion; Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: Tides of Time. Basically, anything non-standard and mostly instrumental.
Meaha2010-02-18 03:15:06
I really don't have a ritual or anything. I babble at mom, randomly run off to make sure the nephew isn't exploding things, and in general just do whatever... I have noticed that playing as Meaha improves my mood because she's happier than I am most of the time.

That's a pretty nice setup, sir.
Ileein2010-02-18 03:40:04
I concur. I deeply enjoy listening to soundtracks; they tend to provide a range of emotions for a range of different scenarios, from the poignant to the epic. (Especially the LotR soundtrack.)
Shaddus2010-02-18 03:44:47
I slaughter and eat a baby feet first.

Wait, that's my IC ritual. or is it..?
Vhaas2010-02-18 06:13:03
Oh, I see. This was regarding IC ritual, not just music. In that case, what has unfailingly worked for me is wrapping a towel like a turban around the breadth of my head, climbing to the top of a nearby hill and declaring, "I am Vhaas al'Shirazi!"

Rehearsing in front of a mirror would probably work too, and you wouldn't get sunburn.

I have a very specific setup, I put on my smoking jacket and take my cognac and my cigar from my victorian cabinet and then sit on my chesterfield in my library behind my mahogany desk while jeeves puts puts on a varying selection of LPs. This is only when I'm in the country of course, when I'm in town I have a different setup.

Hehe. I've got some of this nice vanilla Earl Grey that would probably go well with a morning version of that setup. laugh.gif

My routine...sit in the crushing silence of boredom, maybe put my head down on the desk for a few minutes. Twiddle my thumbs. Make some tea. Pet a cat or two. Wait this is hardly different from what I normally do with myself.

I don't know, the main difference between Phoebus and my normal self is her tendency to be vain and drop gerunds all over the place rolleyes.gif
Ayden2010-02-18 17:27:14
I put on a set of fake wings and preen them for half an hour before going on tongue.gif
Lawliet2010-02-19 22:44:00
Usually just... reading something engaging from a writer with a large vocabulary, this also tends to make me write better, and not by just repeating what I've read, either, gives good stimulation in preperation for playing. I have a few bits of rock I listen to when hunting, I may try some sound tracks like Everiine.
Kante2010-02-21 18:03:09
Ever since reading Everiine's lineup, I've been listening to the LOTR soundtracks on Youtube while playing. Epic. Absolutely epic. I seriously feel like it increases my RP abilities tenfold.
Eldanien2010-02-21 18:15:58
A huge stein full of iced tea. Music playlist is mostly instrumental classical though there are a few exceptions.

When I'm trying to motivate myself, the tea gets traded in for extra strong coffee with too much sugar and a splash of cream. The playlist gets switched up a bit with punk. Carmina Burana shows up in both playlists, as does Blue (Da Ba Dee).

You should try defending in a raid while "War" from "Avatar - Music from the Motion Picture" is playing biggrin.gif .
