See my post a page ago about making them not OOC. ):
You can make anything IC, the point still remains it is a pure OOC method (i.e. it is just between the game and you). I actually would almost rather have them remain explicitly ooc if they are added rather than having a justification for them in game, though either way I could live with.

Yeah, what? So is everything not explicitly player interaction purely OOC?
Unknown2010-02-26 20:39:35
It's like in a video game when you have to hack a computer or solve a puzzle to progress with your current mission or quest. Make the pace match the activity, and it's a neat idea.

If the game sends something to your client that no other player can see, and you send a response back that no other player can see, I consider that an OOC interaction.
I.E. a bug report is not IC as just one simple example.
This check is an OOC solution to an OOC issue, other OOC issues have been solved with IC solutions (distort for example), and sometimes "IC" issues are solved via OOC methods (the issue command).
All things being equal I want IC solutions to problems as they add to the game. As I said though I understand how some IC solutions take more effort than the admin can/want to spend and I can live with a less optimal solution.

I just did a quest earlier when an NPC was sending me a tell basically congratulating on me on finishing the quest, no other player could see that. Is that OOC?
And you could easily make this thing visible to anybody who's currently in the room with the module. <,<

There's many times that only one person sees something that no one else does!

Ok I concede the point that you can make these captcha displays IC.
I still think they are tacky.

I don't see why the owner of the ship should be punished. If you want to stop people from abusing mechanics, such as afk aetherhunting, you make an example of someone by actually giving out a long-term shrubbing. Trust me, the moment you long-term shrub an established character, afk levels will drop considerably. It's harsh, but obviously these short-term, once in a while shrubbings aren't working.
Unknown2010-02-26 21:15:36
I have to agree. Short-term punishments don't have the effect a long-term, or even permanent, punishment will. 'Oh, I'll only get shrubbed for a week/month if I get caught? Totally worth the risk and I'll be right back at it.' They'd think a little harder about that if they stood to completely lose the character or even lose them for a month+ and get their exp raped via a hex/curse - drag them below the exp level they were at before they got shrubbed and it might well serve as a deterrent as well. I just think perm shrubbings are a better example, really.

Yes, because shrubbings have proved effective in all other cases of stopping rule breaking by people.

I'm all for punishing the transgressor, the entire crew, and even the owner of the ship if it happens more than once.
I do AFK checks on my runs, have almost since the start of aetherspace. Any time I find myself with a new person on my ship, I explain the rules - you go AFK, I kill you. If you need to AFK, you unlock your module.
This isn't hard, it doesn't take any time (You can do these while you're hunting if you're using shockwaves), and honestly...it's fun. Every now and again, you win the lottery and get to Chasm/Incinerate/InstakillOfTheDay someone.
The modules on my ship are set to bar certain people who I don't trust, but they're otherwise pretty open. My command chair is restricted to a handful of people I find trustworthy, and yes. I expect if they take the ship out while I'm not around, they enforce the same rules I do when I'm on it.
The -only- reason to object to this is because you know you go out with people who are inherently untrustworthy, and you're afraid you're going to get in trouble for enabling them to break the rules.
As for city/guild owned ships, the leadership is responsible for that ships responsible usage. Once more, I don't see an issue with this - once is a mistake, but if you have someone repeatedly breaking the rules, there's no reason that person shouldn't be dealt with.

Also the whole "omgzorz checking for afk is OOC and not my job cause it is OOC" is a load of crap. I doubt there is one person who has posted in this thread that uses Shipt as a solely IC medium. Every single ship I have been on Shipt is OOC. Not to mention that if you can't figure out how to tell if someone on your ship is AFK than you are an idiot.

There's really no reason for them to be OOC honestly, and kinda annoys me when people immediately jump to it. I recall a few earlier hunts being IC until you started spouting star trek puns. ):

While this is often the case, it's far from always. The city/commune ships tend to be far more IC than, say, the random ships assembled by random people who might even be enemies to eachother.

None of our trips were 'IC', not on the Wyrm anyways. Even without the star trek puns. Not to mention it was mostly Starfox puns. They were either silence or OOC.
Ixchilgal2010-02-26 22:25:56
And 90% of the time, if they were silence, it was because we were babbling on Skype instead.

Early hunts meaning while you still Gregori, on the Aetherfoal. And yes, that's right, Starfox.

Well on the Aetherfoal nobody talked period, plus it is an Org ship so OOC would be bad there. I am referring to private owned ships which are used far more frequently.
@Anisu There is no rule saying Shipt can't be OOC. It is a private, invitation only, medium much like a clan. Just like there is no rule saying squads can't be OOC. Being OOC in game is frowned on period, which is one reason the administration does not recognise clans as OOC, but hey I am sure you are in some. The fact remains, they are used OOCly.

Actually I recall when the idea for squads were first brought up Estarra mentioned she was worried that squadt would end up being OOC like... rings or something from some other game.

Staying IN CHARACTER, and Other Restrictions
--------------------------------------------
Always stay in character (IC) on channels - you are playing the role
of a person in a magical world called Lusternia. Talk about real life,
other muds, or your favorite singer - this should all be done outside
the game or, if you
must, use TELLS.
And while yes secret clans get a bit of leeway, shipt is an obvious IC function that is given by a skill.
