So, I haven't played any IRE games in almost two years. Thinking of getting back into it again, and two of my old characters are still here. (Ok, maybe the others are too, but I forgot their passwords. So much for my Ninjakari and my Celestine.)
Selverad and Camerick are mid-level (80 and 66, respectively) and naked, each with a pile of gold on their lap (Camerick has significantly more... Due to him seeing more play during my last sessions, and requiring fewer resources ) and not much else (Camerick has a few bard-related documents sitting around, but that's it.)
After such a long absence, what would be the best way to bring myself up to speed on changes in the game world, and how to do things? I had considered a new character to try and reacquaint myself with the way things work, without making my Harbinger Undersecretary or my Serenguard Forger look like an idiot.
If you had been away for a long time, and had forgotten how everything worked, how would you get back into the swing of things? And would you use Nexus or the new Flash client? (Normal MUSH clients don't get along well with my brain.)

You can go to the website, and there's a link you can use to recover your lost password. Try that, first.
Though I can't find the password for an alt I bought credits for, and don't think I registered with it, so, not sure what to do there.

Well, I wasn't too attached to those two anyways. The Trill was an experiment, and the Aslaran was just to see what the Stealth skill could do. I can live without them. I'm more concerned with getting my two mains up to speed again, and possibly starting a new experimental character for some different combat.
NOTE: I'm mostly PvE, since I suck at scripting and can barely use anything besides Nexus competently, although if I start a new character I may try the Flash client, if it's any better.

Welcome back =)
A couple of things that have helped me in similar situations.
First don't worry about playing an existing character who might look like an idiot for forgetting or not knowing things. People will understand on an OOC level that you need time, and from an IC point of view it is easy to explain it as waking from a long slumber, or trip, or head injury or any number of things. Embrace the changes, you are more likely to have fun on an established char than on a new one.
You can check out the excellent Lusternia Lore Wiki for up to date info on a lot of things.
Use nsum to quickly browse through the subject lines of news posts, only bother reading things that look important. You should try to do this with your announce and guild news.
Try to focus on getting back into a gold earning setup, so prioritize replacing your gear with the things you NEED before you worry about the nice to have things. I am sure many people would be happy to assist you IC as well with loans or gifts of things like robes or vials or something, don't be afraid to ask.
I always try to get back up to speed using areas I was very familiar with in the past. Once I get back into the flow I then move on to worrying about seeing new things.

Ok, so since Camerick is the one most likely to be able to buy his own starting gear (and the one with the most stable guild, in which I used to hold a position and still have rank), that's who I'll be starting with.
As I re-familiarize myself with how everything works, would it be best to use Nexus and all my old triggers, or start trying to make a new system in the Flash client?

The trick is just to spend a lot of time in the game/forums so just play and ask your guild/mentor/guides a lot of questions. Borrowing gold or equipment will help you get started faster. Avoid aggressive actions like raiding until you get your bearings or life can be difficult.
Try the Mudlet client. I think it's pretty nice and there's a link in my sig.

My problem with external clients is that I can't program at all... or script... or anything remotely like it. The way my brain works, certain letters and numbers are processed interchangably. This makes error-hunting, or even formulating a script in the first place, nearly impossible for me, and my current 'system' in Nexus is based on trial, lots of error, and AIM conversations and forum conversations with multiple people in Achaea and Lusternia. I had someone try and set me up with a system back when I dabbled in Imperian, but it was pretty much unintelligible to me.

Plenty of good free systems out there. Treant (by Iasmos) for Mush comes to mind. It has easy installation and pretty straight forward usage, an all around good system.
Disclaimer: I am biased, as Zarquan/Iasmos taught/got me into programming, and I have spent a lot of time with the Treant source and and find it both pleasing and highly functional. He does good work.

Mudlet is very easy to use and there is a small but dedicated community if you need help. There are links to free Mudlet systems in Mechanic's corner and the Mudlet clan scrolls IG. If you can download files, click import and browse file directories then you can set up a system in Mudlet.

At this stage, though, the free systems for Mudlet are still just getting started.
And, I didn't plug my combat system here because it sounds like he's really against the idea.

E-mail support@lusternia.com with the character names and explain the situation. They can compare registration information, ips, etc, and hopefully resolve the situation.

But because I didn't personally set it up to do certain things, it will likely remain useless to me.
A system I don't understand is just about as useful to me as a system I can't create.
@ Simimi, I would try the Mush system, but I would need someone on AIM or Skype or something to help talk me through it. Like I said, it helps a lot if I can understand a system. I'd miss the compass and health bars, but I'm already sort of getting used to the lack of compass by playing with the Flash client, so maybe I could cope.

Pretty sure Iasmos coded a nexus-looking GUI for MUSH/Treant .

I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things after a year and a half break from MUDding, so I understand your plight. Just take it one day at a time. I've restocked on health, mana and bromides, I have some vitae and some mending, so I'm slowly getting back there.
