If someone dies permanently in Lusternia (which I hope we can agree does happen, even if players and NPCs respawn), what happens to them?
Xavius2010-04-17 23:22:35
Snip, snip.
Unknown2010-04-17 23:27:26
Are you just gone after that, or does your soul go somewhere, or is it an open question?
Lendren2010-04-17 23:29:12
They become somewhat less fun at parties.
Dysolis2010-04-17 23:41:27
Erm pardon for questioning but other than admin removal and suicide how do you perma die?
Unknown2010-04-17 23:48:09
You have to chose to make your character get killed off for real.

Well, I think that's beside the point.
I think the question is: Even if none of our characters permanently die in practice (well, SUICIDE, but that's not explained either), what would happen to them if they actually did, according to Lusternia's lore/flavor/backstory?
(If you were asking that question just to ask and find out methods of permadeath, carry on.)

I'd imagine your thread (literally your lifeline) is discarded from the Tapestry of Life.

Perhaps your thread is cut, but your character's soul returns to limbo/the void/whatever, waiting to be reincarnated (in practical terms, as a new Lusternia player).

While it's certainly implied that some of the characters from the histories are gone, we can't be 100% sure that one day Ellindel won't pop out from behind a bush no one thought to look behind, or something. However, we do know that some of them that used to be alive are now dead because we can see their ghosts, like Marilynth, or Chuchip. That's about the only absolutely certain sign of permanent death... and even that, they can't be totally unwoven from the Tapestry, since they're still standing around jabbering at us. There are certainly graves and barrows and cairns and stuff, but no certainty that just because you haven't seen a ghost or spectre at them, doesn't mean there isn't one.
Eldanien2010-04-18 01:56:21
This is where Celest is doing it wrong. How many times has the spirit of Princess Marilynth been raised, and no one thought to starchant sacrifice?

I'd love to see a book written IG on the topic of death, spirits left behind, the nature of the serenwilde's ancestral spirits (and the Hartstone's spiritual flame), etc etc.
Jayden2010-04-18 02:11:10
Why Nyla went poof and came back I wrote a book on what happened when his thread was cut... Talks about meeting Guido and what happens when the whole thread cutting thing happens
Its in one of the diaries he has on him... it basically came to the conclusion of the realization of the end of his existance ... end of thought and such before coming back

Damnit.
I thought I'd be able to go dormant easily this time. Evidently not.

I tried to address some of this with my book Chuchip, pretty much all of which has now been proven wrong by subsequent events. Proposing theoretical ideas about the history, physics, etc. of Lusternia is exhausting work since later events always completely and utterly contradict everything you postulated. For me, the only reason to do it is if the idea takes your fancy, not for the scholasticism itself, since you can be guaranteed you will not ultimately get to contribute anything to the scholarship of Lusternia.

It was once said (many, many years ago) that Chuchip's spirit was bound to the Serenwilde by his love for the forest - while most people's souls are rewoven into the tapestry to be reborn, his was bound. Or that's how I remember it being told.
Edit: Doesn't mean I wasn't misinformed, though. :x

Personally, I operate under the assumption that respawning/repopping is the exception, not the rule, because things just aren't as dramatic without death. I mean, why are we worried about Kethuru getting us if we'll just repop after he gets out, and Estarra can move the respawn zone if he's griefing us?
Basically I asked the question to see if there was an established answer to this in the lore, and apparently there isn't one set in stone, which makes me happy Since part of the RP I'm working on for Winnae involves his belief concerning where people go when they die.

I'm pretty sure people are rewoven back into the tapestry (and reborn). Since the running theory is there's no 'creation' and no 'destruction' then mortal souls have to come from somewhere. Could go with the Adam Kadmon theory and believe there's a place with every merian soul waiting to be born (though eventually it would have to run out!) or go with an adaptation (there's x souls and they're all just being rewoven).
I'd really love to see some interesting ideas play out, personally (and there's no reason Winnae shouldn't believe there's xyz afterlife or what have you! Though I think the general notion behind Nihilists and the like is eternal life by way of undeath, but... )

I don't know how our characters would know that threads were rewoven into the tapestry though. Someone wouldn't have any knowledge of being a reincarnation, so it isn't something we could write about, is it? :/ I suppose theorizing it wouldn't necessarily be a big deal, but still.
Ileein2010-04-18 12:20:40
There's something about that when you pray, isn't there? You remember all of your past lives and such, though I think you're meant to forget again when the Fates send you back. Something about things men is not meant to know.
