Back to The Real World.

Hi, that other thread got me thinking about a book i enjoyed in my teen years. I cannot remember the name of the book, or the author. This is what I do remember:

1. Pretty sure it was part of a trilogy, though I could be mistaken about that.
2. Typical fantasy plot of a young boy grown into a powerful wizard or somesuch. His village burns down, is forced to go on the road, etc. Of course there was a wizened old man who took him into something like a wizard cottage in the forest. WIZARD COTTAGE!
3. Was sort of dark, there was some sex and rape involved (I think on the protagonist, cant remember though) - the main enemy forces could have been comitting these acts, do not really recall.
4. Probably irrelevant because there are always several versions of books published, but it was one of those large fancy soft-covers. The cover was pretty (though I do not remember it), and the chapter headings had little ornate motifs.
5. I think the author was female.

This probably describes about every generic fantasy book ever made, but eh. It just bugs me I never finished the trilogy, because I do remember enjoying it.

Well then. I'm just gonna sit here and be sad at you. Any chance it had Rhapsody in the title? Don't ask why I'm asking that.

If it's not that, then maybe one of these will jog your memory.

Haha, negative. Thanks though. I wouldn't be caught reading something with a cover like that. Yes, I was a shallow lad (and still am, honestly)

It might have had something to do with dragons, crystals, and esoteric stuff. The cover was probably non-provocative, but still pretty. I think the second book of the series was Water Something or Ice Blabla - though my memory could be wrong.

Alternately it could be a different book by Lackey; Magic's Pawn/Promise/Price? Does Valdemar ring a bell?

Also, wtc is wrong with Owlflight's cover? It's an owl with a guy in front of it.

I have already looked at that list looking for this book, couldn't find it listed. Its probably considered B-list fantasy or even lower.

Cant be that series, I'm quite sure the main character was a pauper. The summary doesn't fit.

QUOTE
Vanyel's disdain for swordsmanship earns him an unexpected exile--at the High Court of Valdemar under the guardianship of his stern and implacable Aunt Savil, one of the legendary Herald-Mages. A young man's painful discovery of his own immense talents and his true nature form the core of this richly detailed fantasy, the first in a new series set in the same world as "The Heroes of Valdemar." Lackey's talent for characterization lends depth to this coming-of-age adventure that will appeal to most fantasy readers.

What year are we talking? Could eliminate a lot of books by telling us what year you read it in.

Hmm, its like this - sort of a generic title and cover... But I'm pretty sure this isn't it. Its horribly cliche, unlike what the reviews say for Blood Ties.

When in doubt, go to Wikipedia. It lists a bunch of fantasy authors, and what trilogies they wrote.

Trust me silly Pectus, I've been looking myself!

I was hoping someone would recognize some of the main plot points (pauper hero, village burned, rape, wizard takes him in, becomes a man, etc)

I wasn't posting it for you tongue.gif I was posting it for others so they can do the work of looking through each trilogy instead of me!
Arix2010-04-20 23:58:57
you know, aside from the rape and the hometown burning, it sounds like the Mancer series (Pyromancer, Aquamancer, Geomancer, Aeromancer) by Don Callander. That series was rather generic and rife with Deus Ex Machina
Shulamit2010-04-21 00:02:34
If you don't mind me maybe forgetting, I'll add it to the list of books to ask the guy I work with what book it is.

(sorry pectus! honest though, he doesn't work sundays sad.gif
Arix2010-04-21 00:17:11
Was the book new when you read it?
