Was the book new when you read it?

Yes.

I found a series (not a trilogy) called 'Malazan Book of the Fallen'. It was written in 2000-ish, and one of the books had ice in the title. Also, the first or second book has a character who survives the sacking of his hometown, though I didn't see anything about a wizard

That series seems neat, but I'm pretty sure that isnt it. =(

BTW, the series with Vanyel Ashekevron (sp) was awesome, Magic's promise and all that.

Fairly certain my boyfriend is planning to have me read those. tongue.gif

The book sounds familiar, what you're describing Bali, but can't think of it for the life of me.

Fair warning:

If you don't like series that go all over the place and have more characters than one could ever hope to remember... probably want to avoid that one.

That said, I buy the next one every time I find it on the shelf and it's nearing the conclusion (finally) so... eh.

Hi, that other thread got me thinking about a book i enjoyed in my teen years. I cannot remember the name of the book, or the author. This is what I do remember:

1. Pretty sure it was part of a trilogy, though I could be mistaken about that.
2. Typical fantasy plot of a young boy grown into a powerful wizard or somesuch. His village burns down, is forced to go on the road, etc. Of course there was a wizened old man who took him into something like a wizard cottage in the forest. WIZARD COTTAGE!
3. Was sort of dark, there was some sex and rape involved (I think on the protagonist, cant remember though) - the main enemy forces could have been comitting these acts, do not really recall.
4. Probably irrelevant because there are always several versions of books published, but it was one of those large fancy soft-covers. The cover was pretty (though I do not remember it), and the chapter headings had little ornate motifs.
5. I think the author was female.

This probably describes about every generic fantasy book ever made, but eh. It just bugs me I never finished the trilogy, because I do remember enjoying it.

Can you recall when it was published?

You remember if it was Patricia A. McKillip who wrote it?
Aliod2010-05-16 17:18:41
It was obviously the DOOM series...obviously.

Sup. Well, I found it.

I found it on the shelves, by chance, in a bookstore. The author is Storm Constantine. The book was The Crown of Silence. I suppose I couldn't find it online because it was the second book in the series, so when I read the synopsis online, it didn't sound familiar.

Damn, I should have known. Sex and rape, Storm Constantine, definitely fits. tongue.gif Is that the Magravandias trilogy? I think I've read that.

Oh god. I remember her. I remember the first few pages of that series.

If you had mentioned Wraeththu we would have got it immediately. She's responsible for that as well.
