We're working on a way to reward people who do combat/defense/powergathering but have already hit the CR4 mark, probably with credits, the way Glom did with their CR6 people, if anyone remembers how that works.
Tell me more.

Playing with my hookah and finding out that it has more than one message per herb. I love this thing!

I'd respond, but the good Eventru said to shut up, so I'll just tweet. I hate focus enchantments. I always forget to recharge them every ten days.

I think I'm okay to respond, since I'm talking about Glomdoring's system here. I don't actually know if its still done, but when you got to CR6 and did stuff that would get you a favour, you got marked up for a credit instead. Ie. Xenthos is CR6 but Seren raids and tries to kill an Avatar, so Xenthos goes to defend. Everyone gets a favour for it, but Xen is CR6, so he gets a credit mark instead. The list of credits was stored on the Court clan and when you hit multiples of 5 (5,10,15,20, etc.), the CL would send you a message saying "Hey, thanks for your contributions. You've got 5 credits reserved for you due to your service to the commune. If you want to buy them for , please deposit it in the bank and message me to let me know."

Hey, nothing wrong with messaging people.
My tweet: Showing a new person how to design things, and they were pretty damned good at it. Wheeeeee.

I was the only one who ever did it / followed through with it, because I wrote an entire program to keep track of it in zMud, aliases and all (and then a C++ program that parsed a text dump and formatted it nicely for pasting into a clhelp).
It's a heck of a lot of work to keep up with without making most of it automatic; the only things I had to do with my code was "addcredit X" to give them a note, "showcredits" to see a list of everyone who had earned them, an alias that I can't remember off the top of my head to tell someone they had reached 5+, and an alias to give credits to a person once I had received a message and checked the logs for a deposit (this automatically debited the credits from their total earned).
I always preferred this to credit sales, because it gave the credits to people who were actually doing productive stuff.
I also added a credit-point to people who weren't CR6 but had done 'something' that might not have been quite worthy of a favour but I wanted them to get something for.
Ileein2010-09-22 19:21:36
Doesn't Celest give credits to people who do favor-worthy things but can't be favored anymore, too?

I know they used to. I got a credit from that program.

Wow... I used to just edit it manually and try really really hard to make sure all the columns lined up!

So... I was thinking. Do people prefer player-created conflict or Divine-created conflict? And if it is player-created, when is enough, enough?
Shaddus2010-09-23 09:29:49
I prefer divine related comflict, because then I have a valid person to blame it on.

There's...no real easy answer for this. If it's Divine-created, the players will say it's 'forced conflict', and player-created conflict usually goes so far that the Admin change a few things in the code to appease the vocal losers.
It's now impossible to actually lose anything due to conflict. With 4 Elemental Planes, Xion, Astral, Aetherspace, etc. etc, dead smobs (Supernals, Avatars, Demon Lords, etc.) don't hurt that much in terms of power, plus the 4 Elemental Planes+Xion ensure that your smob doesn't really remain dead all that long. Nexus World weakenings have been removed. Opposing domoths can't be held by one organization now, so it's impossible for anyone to have them in a stranglehold. Village feelings ensure that not all of the villages remain under one org, too.
The only thing people really lose in conflict is ego and e-pride. So...enough is enough when the mechanics stop you.

Both of these things are often true, but I -think- that recently Divine-created conflict has been better-received, at least in the orgs I play. I'd be willing to be proven wrong though. This only extends to the last couple years, since before that there was Hai'Gloh and Raziela and goodness knows what else.
Also worth noting is that Divinity-initiated conflict generally has much more scope for something constructive that both sides will be happy with, as opposed to player-initiated conflict having a much greater chance of only interesting one side and the other side being thoroughly fed up with it. There have been times the latter wasn't the case, though.
Everiine2010-09-23 12:16:51
Player-created conflict, when done well, easily beats Divine-created conflict, because it really makes you feel like you are making a difference in the game.
That being said, the last time that player-created conflict was actually done well was long, long, LONG ago. Usually it's a metagame of "how much can I with this org and make them cry?" to give the other person a sense that they have "won." Not at all constructive or good for the game. Divine-created conflict is managed and overseen, making it much better now than the usual player-driven stuff.
