Yeah, excluding the combatants from higher castes if they don't want to/can't do any of the science/art things doesn't actually work in practice. Of course, we've discussed this many, many times.
Edit: Even better is when the combatants get threatened/punished for not wanting to fight.

Err... Not Scientist, Bureaucrat caste though I've ended up higher for defending and helping in revolts sometimes.
meh, I'm still waiting to see some form of proposal that is more than "We should make it so warrior caste is a higher caste" cause that's all it ever seems to be.

i think its more "warriors guard our ass while we tinker with things, we shouldnt give them a reason to be disgruntled.M

We should get Toclafane to do it.

Yeah, but it's also "Your purpose in life is to beat things up so that we can perform this experiment in safety"
Plus the only real reason we would need people at higher ranks is for influencing. Which does create the issue with having the influencing skills locked off from the general population, though I feel that even if they had access to all influencing skills people would still dislike that they are not able to get to cr6.

Would be waaaay better. Though would we need to, find and then, rip the heart out of hallifax to maintain the required paradox?
Ardmore2010-10-02 00:52:04
:/ I don't know whether or not to come back. If I do, I'm pretty sure there'll be at least a guild change - maybe the entire org. Decisions, decisions.

For the first time in recent memory the place I'm in is doing WELL in the things it wants to. We did just get cultural centre

I'm sure we could figure it out with all our aeonicists.

I'd bet that would not be the case for the majority of the people currently complaining about it.

I'd be interesting to see, just what I've seen is a lot of "if I learn to fight I should get rank 6" but while yes fighters help in revolts we need people to actually do the influencing. By just elevating warrior caste to higher castes all that this would do in the current caste articles would be promoting people to cr6 for defending, it probably would not allow for favours for revolts though whether influencing is considered warrior caste action or something else, would seem different because you do not need to be a warrior to be an influencer.
This difference is why I am skeptical because the focus seems to be on getting the warriors up and not getting influencers up, while the influencers have an actual need for the higher cr.

Biased people. Shame on you.

But the warriors also tend to be able, if not pretty good influencers as well. At least in Glom.
Unknown2010-10-02 06:33:23
We (Glomdoring) favor both combatants and influencers. And power-gatherers. And people who are generally helpful, etc. That way we have both fighters who fend off enemies and influencers who can take villages, and not have a shortage of either by offending some fighters or some influencers. Plus, the more higher-CR people there are, the more people there are who can favor...and that's a wonderful cycle to start, don't you think?

Xenthos hates Kephera IRL.
I guess I'll reciprocate and take aim at Faelings next racial balance.
Unknown2010-10-02 07:09:48
Disconnect the caste system from city rank all together. The two do not need to be connected and Hallifax is hobbling itself mechanically and RP-wise by doing it.

Hallifax discriminates, it's part of the culture.
I've also not noticed a major need for more people to favour, perhaps because hallifax is set up so that people hit certain cr 2 or 4 and stop. Almost everyone involved in the last revolts were either cr1 or cr4 with a couple people in-between with our current cr6's the favours should be completed rather quickly.
With caste relating to cr it backs up the different levels of the castes, try arguing that warriors/beaurocrats/etc are lesser than the scholars and artists when everyone is cr 6.
It's easier for... well... everyone else, you don't have the caste system as a defining feature of your org. Saying that you can favour combatants and influence doesn't mean much because you don't have a system handed down by the admin that you are supposed to work with with statements that warriors are not on the same tier as scholars and artists.
@othero: It's all well and good to say divorce castes from cr, but how are you going to maintain the castes within the city? If you go clan or something where all members of hallifax are members just to track their caste then you potentially end up with cr6 servants.
