Subj: Tempering Kata Weapons and Commodity Adjustments
We have just released the ability to temper kata weapons. In line with
that, we have also adjusted the commodity price for kata weapons to keep
them in line with warrior weapons, being that now you can temper and
don't need to keep reforging.
Further, we have adjusted commodities across the board for every trade
skill. Part of the reason for this is there has been a snowballing glut
in commodities and we want to start adjusting that to make commodities
more worthwhile and making the commercial government more attractive.
As part of this change, I would like to encourage cities and communes
not to stockpile commodities that trades need. With the possible
exception of marble and wood (which are sometimes used for adding rooms
to cities and communes), there is really no reason that cities and
communes to need excessive amounts of commodities. Sure, putting some
away for a rainy day may make sense but some of the present levels of
stockpiling is simply unnecessary.

Basically, most comms have been multiplied by 10X or so, except most corpses. Not sure if I like this, but it works.

You carefully study a forging design.
Item: Chain Type: Kata Org: BLF
Commodities: mammoth 3 infernobeetle 26 silver 371
Mortal Reviews: Allowed
IMPORTANT: The main noun MUST use one of these: CHAIN, JAKARI
Appearance:
a ceremonial ivory and obsidian chain
Dropped:
Piled carefully on the ground here is an intricately carved ivory and obsidian chain.
Examined:
The centre of this jakari is an ivory handle, carved with scenes from
around the Basin; a cottage with children playing in front, a farmer in
his fields, a crone at her loom, and so on. Examined a bit closer, each
scene also holds an illithoid hiding and poised to strike each
unassuming peasant. From each end of the handle extends a silvered
chain, delicate but no less deadly than would be a larger counterpart.
Each link is inscribed with spidery runes of stealth and hunger, and one
end bears a menacing obsidian sickle. The curved blade is highly
polished and chipped to a wicked edge, kept clean from any effluence
which one might find on a normal jakari. The other end bears a large
silvered ball, covered with a multitude of barbs to catch on flesh and
rip when pulled.

So this jakari will take 26 infernobeetles, and cost you at least 37k worth of comms? Ouch.

Thoughts?

If you're a trademaster, you'll need to message the Charites to tweak the designs which have resetting commodities should they be altered to be made impossible to create.

Also, if the monk affliction speed is too off-kilter now, you'll want to contact your nearest envoy to get that looked at too.
Razenth2010-05-13 22:34:27
I don't think that design is forgable anymore...

The Charites have asked trademasters to point out any designs that may need to be readjusted and that design looks like a prime candidate for review!

ARTS - WOODCRAFT

Syntax: WOODCRAFT
You can craft simple items out of wood.Ingredients:
Pipe: wood 1
Deck: wood 1
Spike: wood 1

Pipes were one of the few things that artisans, particularly those of low skill, could make much of any profit on. The extra decay time now is virtually impossible to use against the commodity difference here, so there's very little reason to get artisan pipes now, unless you intend to rune them. Please revert artisan pipe costs back, or make arts-made pipes cost more wood.

Thanks.

Hopefully all the orgs will now release their comm stockpiles to the market for low low low low low low prices!

Or else :censor: will go down.

I'm not sure that will help long term. Comm supply is the same after those stockpiles wear down, so we're going to see prices rise across the board or have demand fall off a cliff. This makes coming back after your stuff decays even more painful than it was, and it makes it harder to get on your feet as a novice.

I'm not entirely sure why communes and cities are being encouraged not to stockpile comms, considering they've been increased this much. :/ Wouldn't that be a better reason FOR them to stockpile?

Gaudiguch is (further) screwed, yay!

This is going to have pretty much the exact opposite of the "intended" effect, unless the intended effect is to move the stockpiling from city to personal rifts and belts.

I do not like this all being a jeweler. It is hard enough getting gems at a decent price (108 gold is the lowest you will ever get uncut gems). It now costs me 250 commodities to make a single brooch because of a bug that was never fixed a long time ago. You are only suppose to be able to wear one brooch at a time, why was this never fixed so it would cost the same as a normal heirloom item? Sure those people who like to fight might have something to whine about this but it is a bug and should have been fixed 4 years ago instead of letting it go this long, and now it actually hurts. How about and addition of more rockeaters if these problems are not figured out or better yet, a skill that lets us harvest our own gems from the beast at a price. I don't know but this change stinks in my opinion and everyone, including newbies are going to pay for it. It costs me twice as much to make rings, I sell for 500 gold, I will have to sell them for at least 800 and 1000 if I want to make any sort of profit from it.

Why did every trade comms have to be upped because of one change? That does not make sense at all and what about the cities that do not have villages at all? They do not have an income of comms even coming in, look at Gaudiguch - it has yet to get a village period. Those problems need to be taken care of before we go off and think, everyone is swimming in comms now we are going to charge you more! No one is going to change their government for commodities, not when it will end up costing them the village in the long run. I know when I was trade minister, I stock piled commodities for two reason 1.) a rainy day when we would not have any villages (which ended up happened and lasted a long time because Glom had that huge surplus going on) 2.) I could offer a lot lower price, instead of paying 150 gold for a gold commodity, I could sell them for 100 before I was replaced.

This is only going to happen if Estarra changes a few more things for commune/city comm shops.

The most important would be to allow the Trade Minister to set separate prices for org-members and foreigners. The other would be the ability to outright ban anyone from a given org from buying from the comm shop. Neither of these options currently exist, and I don't really see any group risking letting a lot of cheap comms sit around unless there's some relative assurance that they'll stay there for them, and not get shipped out for the "enemy" or whoever else.
Unknown2010-05-13 23:02:26
Whoa whoa, leave my 18 brooches alone >:(
Ayisdra2010-05-13 23:04:38
I too enjoy the idea of having more than one brooch. I hate rings for enchantments. I am even designing my own set of brooches for everything because they are just so much more useful than rings or bracelets in my eyes.
Rodngar2010-05-13 23:08:41
Cool, now can we address why a city would stockpile in the first place?

Or perhaps figure out what certain cities without any real commodity income could do now that their designs have become even more expensive?
Unknown2010-05-13 23:10:45
Oh man, sorcelglass comms went up on vials and bottles too. The marketability of those is basically dead now... but there's no way ordinary vials should cost more gems, unless you're going to let gemcuts start revealing more cut gems too.

This is harder to deal with than pipes.
Placeus2010-05-13 23:11:12
Would anyone be able to tell me how kata tempering works? (never knew muh about forging) Are you able to temper a kata weapon that has been removed from the forge?

If not, are any knights able to tell me if they were allowed to transfer their runes/customisations to a new weapon when the last round of forging changes went through? I'm trying to see if it's reasonable for me to ask for mine to be returned for a new weapon if my current staff cannot be tempered.
Unknown2010-05-13 23:12:07
Can temper runed/finished weapons, yes.

Really? Yeah, there goes that entire market unless you're runing them.
