Well, the coffee is pretty expensive, though only in comparison to the price of "regular" coffee. I get all my coffee directly from a specialty tea and coffee importer. It's only about 2-3x more expensive than regular coffee, though.

Other than that, not too terribly expensive, but a step up from "basic and generic," sure. I would consider expensive tastes to be, like... Yagyu beef, sashimi-quality fresh fish, fresh shellfish, shad roe (blech), well-aged fine cheeses, exotic imports, stuff like that.

I forgot a seafood category! My favorite seafood is squid, by a large margin. I've never had a (properly cooked) squid dish I didn't like, be it Indian, Chinese, or homemade. I guess squid are pretty expensive.

Nuh uh. They're yummy. Specially the strawberry ones. wub.gif

Oooooooo also mochi. I completely forgot it, since I seldom get decent mochi anymore. All of the preserved packaged stuff I find is just plain gross. When I'm back home, there's frozen mochi in a fairly obscure little asian market that I could easily pork out on. Have to let it do the slow thaw in the fridge, but it is sooooo good.

Also kimchi, for similar reasons. I've moved, and I've yet to find any decent kimchi. It's not like I crave the stuff, it's just... when I have it, I find myself eating a lot more rice-and-kimchi lunches. Like, almost every day.
Noola2010-05-18 19:01:03
Isn't kimchi that stuff that smells like rotten cabbage... cause it's, well, rotten cabbage? sick.gif

It's pickled. With spices. And it's not always cabbage, and it's not always just cabbage! The spice and the pickling are the important parts.
Eldanien2010-05-18 19:21:22
Depends on your definition of rotten. =P Yes, the spicy, pickled and fermented cabbage variety is the most well known.

Favorite Breakfast Dishes
Technically no breakfast is my favourite aside from a large coffee (some nice Cuban filter coffee by choice, but I tend to settle for an "Americano" from Costa.)
If pushed to eat something I guess scrambled eggs on toast with honey roast salmon flakes.

Favorite Lunch Dishes
It honestly varies a lot, but Sushi would be high on that list. Conveyer belt version preferred but packaged, shop-bought, is acceptable.
Ham and cheese toastie is up there too.

Favorite Dinner Dishes
Schweinshaxe mit karoffeln und sauerkraut + bier to wash it all down. biggrin.gif
Salmon fillet in whatever sauce is on offer with new potatoes and veg.

Favorite Desserts
Anything really, although I'm happy to skip desserts unless ravenous.
Ripe walnuts marinated with honey syrup paste and served with clotted cream.

Favorite Candies
From Liquorice Allsorts - Circular Aniseed One with the Little Balls of Sugar on the Outside, the pink and blue ones.
Or whatever I feel like that day.

Favorite Vegetables
Carrots, raw and cooked.
Sweet peppers.

Favorite Fruits
Apples.
Young coconut (the ones that are still green).

Favorite Breads
Fresh.
Pitta bread (with hummus).

Favorite Meats
Zwiebelmettwurst.
Venison.

Favorite Hot Beverages
Freshly-ground drip-filtered 100% Cuban coffee with semi-skimmed milk.

Favorite Cold Beverages
Redbull.
Beer. I prefer bitters, ales or stouts but I also like a nice weissbierchen, or eleven, on a sunny day.

Favorite Snack
Cashew nuts, unsalted.

Least favourite dish ever
Baby squid. Whole.

Most surprisingly tasty
Octopus.

Oooh, I love mochi. This little sushi place near me has green tea mochi, I love it so much. Nom nom. And kimchi! I love kimchi and also sauerkraut. There's just something about pickled cabbage that appeals to me, I suppose.

well-aged fine cheeses

Cheeeseeeeeeeeeeee! My weakness.

I once joined a gym and went through the dietry review:

Instructor: "How much cheese do you eat in a week?"
Me: "Hmm, I'm not really sure"
Instructor: "Well out of a block this big *indicates the shape of a 250g cheese block* how much?"
Me: "Ohh, I see. In a week? Well, 4 of those then."

I have cut down a lot since then, but I still love my cheese.

I will happily spend £10 on a cave aged French rind cheese. There is a lovely one, the name escapes me at the moment, which is washed in brandy.

EDIT: This one - Epoisses de Bourgogne

I looooove mochi. I used to be able to find good red bean mochi, but I don't know where an Asian market around here is (and I don't have a working car dry.gif ). I'm assuming there is one, since there's a huge Korean population here in Austin.
